  3. Hey Austin - Here come the Mustangs WO-S boys win regional, girls' relay teams qualify for state Van Wade The Orange Leader HUMBLE — A nice crowd at Humble’s Turner Stadium received a treat watching the boys and girls of West Orange-Stark put on a show at the Class 3A Region III Track & Field Championships Saturday. The Mustangs qualified in for the Class 3A State Track Meet in seven events, winning three of them. Both the boys 400-meter and 800-meter relay teams captured first place while junior Trey Franks stormed to the 100-meter title. The girls 400-meter and 800-meter relay units took second place in both events Saturday while Phillip Jones earned second in the 110-meter hurdles. James Haynes, who ran legs on both the 400 and 800-meter relays, nabbed second in the long jump on Friday while Franks earned third in the same event. With their big meet, the Mustangs captured the boys’ regional title, winning with 80 points to outdistance second-place Taylor (73). “What more can you say about our kids, it was quite an accomplishment to win the regional meet against some stout competition like we saw today,†said Mustang coach Toby Foreman. “We had 30 days between the district meet and regional meet and these kids didn’t miss a beat. They were physically ready and mentally ready and they went out and performed like they knew they could. What a day. Now we have three weeks until the State Meet to prepare, that’s going to help a whole bunch.†The quartet of Franks, Haynes, Jones and Josh Gloston burned up the track in the 400 relay, turning in a time of 41.78 seconds. Waco LaVega placed second with a 42.02. Gloston, a senior who ran legs on all three relays, was pumped up after the victory. “I knew I had to come out of the blocks fast,†said Gloston. “I was a little nervous after Silsbee false-started. For us, it’s all about being mentally prepared and Coach Foreman does wonders with that. We knew if we executed our handoffs that we would be faster than everyone else.†The foursome of Gloston, Haynes, Franks and Ed Ivory turned in a season-best time of 1:27.08 to capture the 800-meter relay. The Mustangs did a little switching around, letting Franks run the anchor leg and it went off without a hitch. Waco La Vega was second again, running a 1:27.41. “That’s something we all agreed on as a team just a couple days ago,†said Franks. “James ran a huge third leg and I was able to maintain the last leg. Our execution was nearly perfect. What’s funny is that when we get it down perfect, we could really make a statement in Austin.†“The kids were fantastic on the relays,†said Foreman. “We were a little nervous, making a switch in legs the last couple days. But heck, that’s what we do. The kids get together with me sometimes and make decisions, that was just as much their decision as it was mine and they made it look almost perfect.†Franks really set the tone when he blitzed the competition by running a blistering 10.73 in the 100 meters. He was originally clocked at 10.39 but .34 was added due to the wind. That was strange, because it wasn’t like a gale-force wind was zipping around Turner Stadium. “I felt great all the way through it.†said Franks. “I had one of my better starts and momentum carried me through to the end. The competition was awesome and that pumped me up even more. That was a tough deal with the wind. There was a little breeze but that’s no big deal because I’ll have another chance in Austin and that’s what it’s all about.†Jones narrowly missed gold in the 110-meter hurdles. Jones turned in a 14.76, just getting nipped by Crockett’s JaGarred Davis, who ran a 14.75. Haynes placed seventh in the 200 meters with a 23.04. Haynes had a big day Friday, long jumping 22-7 3/4 to place second behind Silsbee’s Jeremy Johnson, who went 23-10. Franks was third with a leap of 22-6 1/4. “I knew he (Davis) was the man to beat,†said Jones. “I stayed close to him and he barely got me in the end. My shoes started to loosen up on me at the third to last hurdle and that hurt because I thought I had him. To have the chance to go to Austin though in two events is awesome. Hopefully we can come away with some gold there.†Jones, battling shin-splits after his previous two races, was seventh in the 300-hurdles, running a 42.09. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the day came from the Mustang girls. The quartet of Brittany Brantley, Hannah Mobley, Johnesha Sims and Danyale Thomas, all underclassmen as two are sophomores and two are juniors, put on a wonderful showing. Just a year ago, the Lady Mustang track program scored just 20 points in the District 21-3A Meet. This year they scored 32 at regionals. Though they were not quite strong enough for eventual Region III champion Waco Connally in the two relays, they finished right on their heels in both to earn state bids. The four turned in a time of 49.19 in the 400-meter relay to nab second. Connally was first with a 49.12. “This is an incredible feeling,†said Mobley. “I think it has been nine years since WO-S sent a girls relay team to state. We almost ran a perfect race today.†Thomas echoed the same sentiments. “We’ve been wanting this and wanting this,†said Thomas. “Nobody works in practice like we work. We have a lot of dedication and went out and did it.†Sims had plenty of praise for her teammates, especially newcomer Brantley. “Brittany moved here from Virginia and has really lifted us,†said Sims. “She fits right in with us and we just love her to death. Her sense of humor is out of this world.†“I couldn’t be prouder to be a Lady Mustang,†said a giddy Brantley. “Everyone has accepted me and I’m thrilled to be a part of this family. That’s exactly what it is. We all love each other. What a great day.†The same four returned in the 800-meter relay and turned in a second-place time of 1:43.68, a season-best. Connally won with a 1:42.58. “Twice, that’s so nice,†said Mobley. We knew if we held close to Connally, we’d be in good shape. Our handoffs were great today and we just went out and performed like we had too.†Coach Foreman knew the Lady Mustangs had it in them all along. “The Lady Mustangs are probably the best kept secret in Southeast Texas,†said Foreman. “It’s a program that’s back on the rise. Those four kids on those relays are special young ladies. To be honest, I’m prouder of them than anyone else today. They punched their ticket to Austin when many people didn’t give them much of a chance way back when the season started.†The Mustang 1,600-meter relay consisting of Gloston, Ivory, Chris Bundage, and Marquest Watson placed fifth and it was good enough to hold Taylor at bay so WO-S could seal the regional title. Bridge City sophomore Kirby Shepherd almost joined the host of Mustangs in Austin but came up just short in the 800 meters, running a season-best time of 2:00.34. Jasper’s Jyamos Mouton won with a 1:59.38 while Pollok Central’s Davonta Colflesh was second with a 2:00.02. “It was really hot today but I was able to set a good pace,†said Shepherd. “I wish I could have had a little bit better kick at the end and I could’ve made it. This was great competition for me though. The good thing about it is that I have two more years to go.†Bridge City’s Tim Cude was sixth in the 3,200 meters, running a 10:53.51. Teammate Armando Chavez was 19th with a 12:23.37. Cude was seventh in the 1,600 meters with a 4:45.55 and teammate Sawyer Hogan was 19th with a 5:24.62. WO-S’ Eric Arnold was ninth in the discus with a toss of 133-6 1/2 and Orangefield’s Logan Moss was 12th with a 130-5. Arnold was also ninth in the shot put (47-6) while Mustang teammate Stephen Cook was 14th (45-1 3/4). Bridge City’s Justin Reynolds was fourth in the high jump with a 6-2 leap and Orangefield’s Derrick Evans was ninth, going 5-10. In the pole vault, Orangefield’s Leslie Holmes was seventh (13-0), teammate Kyle Fontenot was 10th (12-0) and Bridge City’s Seth Slawson was 11th (11-6). In the girls 3,200, Bridge City’s Mary Nguyen was 11th with a 13:12.50 while teammate Meagan Shockley was 14th with a 13:23.50. Orangefield’s Allie Beach placed sixth in the discus, throwing a personal best of 104-5. Bridge City’s Alex Holland was 14th in the high jump, going 4-8. WO-S’ Sims was seventh in the long jump (16-9 3/4). Bridge City’s Blair Bishop was 10th in the pole vault (8-0) and Orangefield’s Taylor Block was 10th (8-0). Lady Mustang Bethani Orebo was 21st in the shot put (28-11 1/4). WO-S’ Thomas was seventh in the triple jump, going 35-11 3/4.
