Bobcats make quick work of Liberty Mark Marshall The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — Making their first appearance in the postseason in four years the Orangefield Bobcats showed no signs of any playoff inexperience as they ran away with their class 3A best of 3 Bi-District series with the Liberty Panthers. The Bobcats outscored Liberty 21-0 in a two-game sweep capped off on Friday night at Bridge City’s Cardinal Field with a 10-0 victory. With the win Orangefield (22-9) gets a bye in the Area Round and now awaits the winner between the Bridge City Cardinals and Cameron Yoe Yoemen. The two will play a one game winner take all Monday night at Baseball USA in Houston at 7 p.m. The Bobcats got on the board early in the bottom of the second inning as 4 runs crossed home plate. After a Quinton Evans double and a Josh Watson walk Derrick Evans ripped an RBI single to plate Quinton Evans and move Watson over to third. Jace Statum then walked to load the bases. Watson would then score on a passed ball that got away from Panther catcher John Zalesak. The scoring continued when Jonathan Deramus hit a slow roller to the first baseman that would have ended the inning but the ball was misplayed and Deramus reached while Derrick Evans came home. Jacob Felts then crushed a RBI double that brought Statum home to make the score 4-0 in favor of the Bobcats. While Orangefield was busy scoring runs starting pitcher Brock Whitson was busy holding the Liberty offense to a minimum. Whitson worked all 5 innings and allowed just 3 hits while striking out 7. The Bobcats tacked on 5 more runs in the bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded and no outs Chase Angelle connected on an 0-2 pitch and sent it deep into the left field corner to empty the bases with a 3 RBI double. After Angelle advanced to third on a passed ball senior Zach Peevey singled to bring him home making the score 9-0 Bobcats. Orangefield ended the game and the Panther’s season in the bottom of the fifth when Quinton Evans singled to score Jacob Felts and make the final of 10-0. Quinton Evans led the Bobcats at the plate going 3-4 with two singles, a double and the game winning RBI.

Cougars nip LC-M to force third game Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader CROSBY — Call it the game of baseball and call it crazy. The Crosby Cougars had two big innings Friday at Crosby High School and it was enough to pull out a 12-11 victory over the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears. The Cougars and Bears will now meet at 2 p.m. today at Don Gibbens Fields in a deciding Game 3 of the Class 4A Region III bi-district playoff round. LC-M won Game 1, 5-1, at Lamar University in Beaumont. Crosby (20-10) scored six runs in the second inning and five runs in the fifth to pull out the win. The biggest hit coming off the bat of Cori Langley in the bottom of the fifth with LC-M up 11-8. Langley, with the bases loaded, rocked a three-run triple to tie the score and then came home when a relay throw went past LC-M (22-12) catcher Stefan Leger to give Crosby a 12-11 advantage. It was not as if Crosby was knocking around LC-M pitching in the fifth up until Langley’s triple. Coltin Rustin led the inning off by being hit by a pitch and pinch runner Cody Ressler came in to score when James Rachel hit a sacrifice fly. The Cougars loaded the bases with two outs on an infield single, another hit batter and a walk. LC-M would hit five batters in the contest. LC-M took the 11-8 lead in the top of the fifth by scoring three runs. Ryan Waddell, running for Dallas Brown who had walked, scored on a RBI double by Stefan Leger. Leger scored on a RBI single off the bat of Stefan Cloeren and Cloeren later scored on a RBI single by Taylor Thompson. Each team scored a run in the first inning, LC-M’s coming when Matt Johnson scored Tim Barry with a sacrifice fly. Caleb Mangum scored after walking with two outs and Frank Rangel was then able to rip a RBI double to center field to make it 1-1. Barry hit a three-run homer in the top of the second to give LC-M a 4-1 lead. Brandon Landry singled to right with two outs and Dallas Brown to set up Barry’s homer. Crosby then responded with a six-run, bottom of the second to take a 7-4 lead. The Cougars loaded the bases with one out with two hit batters and an infield single. Rachel then drove in two runs with a two-run single to left center. Mangum and Rangel each then had RBI hits to drive in the rest of the runs. Wade Estes crept LC-M back into the game with a two-run single to score Cloeren and Johnson. Cloeren had reached on an infield single and Johnson was hit by a pitch. Cloeren, who is 6-for-8 in the series, drilled a monster two-run bomb in the top of the fourth to dead center field which also plated Leger to give LC-M a 8-7 lead. Cloeren had three RBI in the game. Starting LC-M pitcher Brown, seeing his first action on the mound in about a month, only worked 1 1/3 innings giving up five runs on three hits with two strike outs and one walk. Taylor Thompson worked 4 2/3 innings and gave up seven runs on five hits with two strike outs. Junior Mason Dallas pitched the sixth inning for LC-M and sat down all three batters he faced. Langley, the starter for Crosby, went 4 1/3 and gave up five hits with four strike outs and six walks on 105 pitches.
