  1. Baseball teams having intrasquad games Leader Sports The Orange Leader Local baseball teams are finding a way to stay out of the doldrums by holding their own intrasquad games. Little Cypress-Mauriceville has already gotten one game in. The Bear Whitepants nipped the Bear Graypants 6-5 on Wednesday. The next Greypants-Whitepants game will be today at 4:30 p.m. and next Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 4:30 p.m. The Bears will then hope to play Beaumont Ozen in their District 20-4A finale Monday, May 11. Bridge City will be having plenty of Red-White games. The first will be tonight at 6 p.m. followed by another next Tuesday at 6 p.m. and another one Thursday at 6 p.m. The loser of each Red-White Game will have to serve dinner to the winning team each time. Orangefield will have an intrasquad game today at 4 p.m. and will likely do it again a couple times next week.

  3. Deweyville is hot heading towards playoffs Van Wade The Orange Leader DEWEYVILLE — It’s been quite a nice baseball campaign for the Deweyville Pirates. Coach Darin Fletcher has observed his squad make big strides in District 23-2A, especially in the second half as the Pirates (13-7, 8-3) nabbed the third-place spot. The Pirates have been swinging the bats like crazy lately and have won five of their last six 23-2A games. scoring 60 runs during that span. “When the season started, I thought hitting was going to be our strong point,†said Fletcher. “We came out of the gate a little slow, but lately, the kids have been on fire. They really hit their stride at the right time of the season.†The Pirates are hitting a lofty .350 as a team. In their last two 23-2A games against Hardin (a 15-3 win) and Warren (a 23-2 win), the Pirates have piled up 38 runs. Senior fireplug Seth Williams leads the hitting parade. Williams is hitting a monstrous .491. He also leads the squad in runs (29), doubles (7), runs batted in (27) and home runs (2). Garrett Haney has had a huge year as well. The third baseman-pitcher is batting a lofty .449. He leads the way with 31 hits and has 24 RBI to go along with four triples. Keeton Addison is the third Pirate that’s over .400. He’s batting .413 has 24 runs along with 14 RBI and six doubles. “What more can you say about Seth, he’s one of those kids that you can call a warrior,†said Fletcher. “He’ll run through a wall for you and is all-district in three sports. Keeton, he’s the same type of athlete, involved in three sports. Garrett, he’s been a big plus for us all year. His bat has been awesome. He along with Seth and Eric Avila have been solid on the mound for us too. We’ve also had several other kids step up big.†No doubt, the Pirates are a well-rounded unit. Senior outfielder Kane Kachtik, the former running back who was the Offensive MVP on the All-Leader Football Team last season, is batting a solid .385 with 17 RBI and 17 runs scored. Second base sparkplug Ronnie Anglin hits .353 with 17 RBI and 20 runs scored. Avila is hitting .348 with 18 runs scored. First baseman Hunter Manning is at .317 with 11 RBI and 15 runs scored. Michael Williams (.286) and Brady Williams (.250) have also intertwined well into the lineup. “I love the makeup of our team,†said Fletcher. “All of the kids get along great, there’s no animosity. They just go out and work their tails off.†The Pirates really helped their cause when they defeated fourth-place Kountze 6-5 at home in a nailbiter Apr. 13. “That was certainly the big one,†expressed Fletcher. “We edged them here and beat them 10-8 at their place. If we could have one back, it would’ve been the East Chambers game at home (a 2-1 Pirate loss). It’s hard to lose a game like that.†The Pirates have sealed the third-place playoff spot out of 23-2A. But they still have a chance to disrupt what happens at the top of the district. Buna (13-7, 10-1) is in first-place, a half-game ahead of second-place East Chambers (14-6, 10-2), which has already wrapped up the regular season. The Pirates still have Buna left to wrap up the season. The two teams were going to play tonight at Pirate Field. However, the UIL has intervened, postponing all sporting events until May 11 They have to get that game in before May 19. A Pirate win would force a tie between Buna and EC for the title. “The kids were really wanting to play that game in a bad way,†said Fletcher. “We struggled at the plate in the first half when we went to Buna (a 5-0 Pirate loss). The kids are swinging the bats really well right now and they want another crack at it.†Due to there being no District 24-3A, the Pirates will have a bye in the bidistrict round and will have to play a one-game area round playoff game sometime between May 24-26. “With the new playoff setup, things are going to be different, that’s for sure,†said Fletcher. “The main thing we have to do is to keep the kids focused and make sure they continue to have fun. We still have almost three weeks before we get the Buna game in and then we have a playoff bye. That just sounds crazy.â€

  6. UIL: Regional track meets on By Lance Lahnert [email protected] Post a comment here advertisement ARTICLE TOOLS: Email Article | Print-Friendly Format SHARE THIS STORY: [share on Facebook] The University Interscholastic League will hold the regional track meets, reversing a decision Wednesday the 20 regional meets across the state would be cancelled because of the swine flu outbreak, University Interscholastic League director Charles Breithaupt said Thursday morning. Breithaupt said at 11:30 a.m. UIL officials had confirmation for 19 of the 20 regional meet sites. "We expect to put out a press release by this afternoon or Friday morning letting everybody know the dates and sites," Breithaupt said. The 20 meets over the state were scheduled to be held Friday and Saturday. Now the meets will be conducted between May 11-16. For instance, the Region I-IA meet in Levelland will go off May 12-13, according to officials at South Plains College. "We had some issue with some dates and conflicts with people who couldn't host the meets," Breithaupt said. "Once we have that final site secured we will be ready to go and release it." Breithaupt said after the ruling was made to cancel the regional meets he heard from several coaches who made a legitimate argument of why the meets needed to be conducted. If the meets had been cancelled, the top four finishers from the finals at district meet would have been the criteria to determine the state qualifiers. The normal criteria is finishing in first or second at regionals. "Coaches were professional and weren't complaining but were just lodging the fact many of the better kids in the state didn’t give their best effort at the district meets because they didn’t have to in order to win," Breithaupt said. "Now they wouldn’t be at state because they had planned on qualifying at regional." Breithaupt praised his staff for the large workload accomplished the past 24 hours to secure the 20 regional track meet sites.

  11. Houston gets its first local swine flu patient Girl from Fort Bend Co. recovering after treatment at private medical center The Houston area’s first local resident to be diagnosed with swine flu has been confirmed in Fort Bend County. Officials at Fort Bend County’s health department said early Wednesday evening that they just received confirmation of the case from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The resident, a teenage girl, was not hospitalized and is recovering, said the officials. She is a student in Bellaire at Episcopal High School, which starting Thursday will close through the weekend. The illness started in the middle of last week, and she was treated by a private medical center. She had not recently traveled to Mexico. The confirmation came a half a day after the CDC announced that a nearly 2-year-old Mexico City boy who fell ill in Brownsville and was transported for treatment at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston was the first U.S. death.
  12. It's hard to Moderate all the boards. Johnny does a good job.
  13. A new postseason track schedule could be announced later this week. "If there's a safety issue, it's public problem for us having a kids come to a common place from all over the state," Breithaupt said. "We understand that. It's one of those tough calls you have to make. "Stay tuned, because we think we have a better model now that we have a little time to think about it." The biggest hurdle may be rescheduling the state meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin. The state meet is now currently slated for May 14-16. UT officials will not let the UIL push things back one week because it bumps into graduation ceremonies. "Every hotel room, parking spot and facilities are taken that weekend," Breithaupt said. "No one is allowed to schedule anything that week." Area high schools officials are anxious to see what the final schedule will look like. "That's unfortunate that has to happen, but I guess they've got to make a decision, I guess," Dallas ISD athletic director Jeff Johnson said.
  14. There will be a Regional Track Meet according to the UIL Director. Hopefully news Thursday.
  15. Dr. B basically said they did what they thought was right at this time. Then he was asked did they think the trigger may have been pulled a little early and he said "that's a fair assement" as well.
