Sterling wins District 21-5A tennis By Robert Chambliss Correspondent Published April 17, 2009 It has been a few years since Sterling won the boys and girls district championships in the spring, but the year 2009 broke the streak. Of the five total brackets, the Sterling Rangers won three. They dominated in the girls doubles division, winning first and second; the Rangers first and third in the boys doubles division, and fought hard to get first in mixed doubles. “This was our goal all year,†Ranger head coach Jan Strubbe said. “We came into the year wanting to win it all, and we came out really happy.†The Rangers excelled on Thursday, including beating their rivals, the Lee Ganders, in the boys doubles final. The Rangers’ Cameron Gardner and Josh Villarreal ended the Cinderella run of Lee’s Kyle Pierce and Johnny Alaniz, who were playing doubles together for the first time. “The match was very intense,†according to Gardner. “We were especially fired up for this, though, because it was Lee.†The Rangers won 6-2, 6-3 to pick up the gold medal and leave the silver medal for the Ganders. Both teams also earned a spot in the regional tournament, which takes place Tuesday and Wednesday at Deer Park High School. In the girls doubles division, the two Rangers teams played each other in the finals. No. 1 seeded Krista Bocksnick and Kristie Kenny beat No. 3 seeds Tess Arnold and Renee Gomez 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, as the Rangers captured both the gold and the silver medals, and both girls doubles spots for regionals. The mixed doubles championship was one that will be remembered for a while. No. 1 players for Sterling, Michael McDaniel and Janelle Jagnanan, teamed up to beat the West Brook twosome of Isaiah Seastrunk and Jenna Abante 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to capture the gold medal and a spot in the regional tournament. “Going into this match as the No. 1 seed we hoped to win,†said Strubbe. “We had played West Brook once before, and they gave us trouble, but we pulled it out the first time so I expected it to happen again.†In the boys singles division, both Lee and Sterling produced medals for their respective schools. Lee’s No.1 player, Dillon Eastman, played in the finals of the boys singles against Sagara Desai from West Brook. Sagara prevailed 6-0, 6-0, which pushed Eastman into the playback versus Stuart Tiller from Sterling. The match went three sets in the favor of Eastman, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Eastman picked up the silver medal and a regional spot for the Ganders, and Tiller picked up third place for the Rangers. “I am totally excited about Dillon’s results,†Gander head coach David Walker. “He is a sophomore that has never made it to regionals before, and it is good that he is getting to experience it now. “The loss versus Desai was a good experience for him also, because now he has the true taste of what a finals is. “I am also proud of my boys doubles team for getting second place.†Other medals on the day included a third place in boys doubles for Sterling, and also a third-place medal in girls singles for Sterling. In the third place match of the boys doubles divison, Cameron Dyer and Madhur Rahlon defeated West Brook’s Dakota Heintschel and Benny Huynh 6-4, 7-6 (8-6). The Rangers’ Annie Tran played in the first-place match of the girls singles bracket against West Brook’s Alex Fey. The match, however, went in favor of Fey 7-6 (7-1), 6-3, knocking Tran, into the playback match versus Ana Ruiz of North Shore. Ruiz defeated Tran 6-1, 6-3 to take second place. Even with the two losses, Tran still managed to grab the third-place medal. All in all, the Rangers got four of 21-5A’s 10 slots in the regional tournament and Lee got two of them.
