Longhorns take down Bobcats, 10-6 Mark Marshall The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — With sole possession of second place in 21-3A on the line the Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns continued to crush the ball and put together a huge fourth inning helped out by a Bobcat error with 2 outs to get a huge 10-6 victory over the Orangefield Bobcats. With 2 outs and the Bobcats leading 2-1 in the top of the fourth Jake Minaldi hit a ground ball to Bobcat second baseman Jonathan Deramus but the throw to first was off target resulting in a run scoring for the Longhorns. Hamshire-Fannett then ripped off four straight hits and 5 more runs touched home plate in the inning to give the Horns a 7-2 lead that they would not relinquish. The Longhorns got on the board quickly in the top of the first inning when Jeremy Pinder homered to put H-F up 1-0. The Bobcats answered in the bottom of the second when Derrick Evans doubled to score Quinton Evans and Kyle Fontenot giving Orangefield a 2-1 lead. Orangefield (16-8, 3-3) responded to the big Longhorn fourth by scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the fifth. Jace Statum led off with a walk and Deramus followed with a RBI double to score Statum. Deramus would later score on a Chase Angelle RBI double to make the score 7-4 Longhorns. Hamshire-Fannett (16-4, 4-2) would pull away again though in the top of the sixth. After a Pinder single to lead off the inning Taylor Eaves would double to plate Pinder. Pinder would later score on a Lalonde RBI single and padding the Longhorn lead to 9-4. With the score 10-4 Orangefield made a run at a comeback in the bottom of the seventh. Deramus singled to lead off the inning and after a Jacob Felts strikeout, Angelle would walk to put runners on first and second with 1 out. Zach Peevey then singled to load the bases. Quinton Evans then picked up a RBI single that scored Deramus to make the score 10-5 H-F. Fontenot then hit a sac fly to center field that scored Angelle to make the score 10-6 with 2 outs. Josh Watson then walked to load the bases but Derrick Evans would then ground out to end the threat and ball game. Hamshire-Fannett finished the game with 14 hits while Orangefield had 11. Orangefield will hit the road Monday to Sour Lake to take on the Hardin-Jefferson Hawks while Hamshire-Fannett travels to West Orange-Stark.

Bears corral PN-G, 8-4 Gabe Pruett The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — If people in Southeast Texas do not think Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears coach Steve Griffith knows his baseball, think again. Griffith made a prediction it would take multiple homers for either the Bears or Port Neches-Groves Indians to win Thursday’s game at homer-friendly Don Gibbens Field. The Bears won the home run battle 3-1 and LC-M defeated PN-G 8-4 in a key District 20-4A game. “I knew the wind was blowing out and I knew we would need two or three homers to win,†Griffith said. “I’m just dang glad it was the Bears.†The first home run came off the bat of Matt Johnson in the bottom of the third to give LC-M (17-9, 7-1) a 2-0 lead. Johnson was yet to have a home run this season and yes Griffith even predicted Johnson would hit a dinger Thursday night. The Indians would crawl to within 2-1 in the top of the fifth when Austin Sangster crossed home plate off a balk from LC-M pitcher Shane Waddell. LC-M went on top 3-1 in the bottom of the inning when Tayler Thompson hit a home run to left field which knocked off the scoreboard. PN-G (10-9, 6-2) answered again in the top of the sixth as Amir Jalai hit a solo homer to left field to make it 3-2. LC-M would not play around in the bottom of the sixth scoring five runs on five hits. The biggest hit coming off the bat of Stefan Cloeren who ripped a homer to very deep left field with Tim Barry on first. Thompson later made it 6-2 with a RBI double to score Johnson. Scott Vaughn got into the act with a RBI single to score Thompson. Shane Waddell came in to score when Dallas Brown plated the Bears’ last run with a RBI single to center. The Indians did not go quietly as PN-G scored two runs in the top of the seventh. Blake Reyenga and Jerin Spikes each scored on a two-RBI double by Zach Rhame. LC-M’s Dallas Brown picked up the win with three innings of work. Brown allowed no runs on two hits with two walks and one strike out. Spikes started the game for the Indians and allowed two runs in four innings of work. Spikes allowed five hits with two walks and four strike outs. “PN-G is always tough,†Cloeren said. “It is great to take two from that team this season. Now we are right in the middle of the fight for the district championship. Our team is playing with a lot of confidence right now.†The Bears venture to Beaumont Central Tuesday.
