  16. Mustangs speed to own track title Van Wade The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — There’s little doubt what the West Orange-Stark boys track team has on its mind, however, May and the Class 3A State Track Meet is still a little more than a month away. The Mustangs want to stay the course and continue to make strides as the season moves along and at their own Mustang Relays Saturday, that was just the case. Led by the explosiveness of Trey Franks and Phillip Jones, the Mustangs captured their own meet Saturday. WO-S won the meet with 109 points, nipping Beaumont Central, which had 106. The Port Arthur Memorial Lady Titans stormed to the girls crown, winning it with 187 points, easily outdistancing second-place Beaumont Ozen. Franks ran the 200 meters in an amazing 21.08 seconds, surpassing his previous Southeast Texas leading time of 21.46. He also matched his best 100-meter time of the year, winning it in 10.38. “Each meet, we just strive to get better as a team,†said Franks. “Coach (Toby) Foreman has tremendous workouts set up for us and we do them every day. Each time we go out, we want to bring our times down.†Franks liked the windy conditions Saturday at Dan Hooks Stadium. “It really felt good out here all day,†said Franks. “The wind didn’t really play any tricks on us. It feels really good that we had the success in our home meet. We’re really pushing for a state title but can’t overlook our district, which will be tough and then regionals. If we just continue to improve and work the way we work, the sky is the limit.†Silsbee will be a strong rival for the Mustangs when the District 21-3A Championships roll around in a couple weeks.“This was a perfect meet for our kids,†said Mustang head coach Toby Foreman. “The competition here was top-notch today and everyone was really pushing each other.†With district nearing, Foreman feels the Mustangs are up for the challenge. “Our district will present challenges, especailly from Silsbee in the relays,†said Foreman. “District can be scary at times. You want to stay healthy as you can and execute so you can get to that regional meet. The kids still have plenty to work on. Our relays have had success but we haven’t been precise as for as our handoffs go. I really like where we’re at as a whole though. I’m also extremely proud with the way some of our young kids competed today.†Jones continues to tear up the track in the hurdle events. He lowered to SE Texas’ best times in both the 300-meter hurdles (39.0) and the 110-meter hurdles (14.22) Saturday. The Mustang foursome of Franks, Jones, Josh Gloston and James Haynes also recorded the best time in the area, running a 41.87, nipping their precious best clocking of 41.88. It was also a tremendous day for Deweyville distance man Joe Dooley. Dooley won the 1,600 meters in 4:33.72, lowering his best-area time, which was 4:34.43. He also captured the 800 meters in 2:00.9. The Mustangs also received a first-place finish from Chris Bundage, who won the 400 meters in 53.40 and the Mustang 1,600-meter relay unit of Gloston, Mark Roberts, Ed Ivory and James Ross won with a 3:31.93. Another big winner was Beaumont Ozen’s Jarrade Lee. Lee tossed the discus 171 feet, 11 3/4 inches to win that event and leads the area with that mark, surpassing his previous best of 167-0. On the girls’ side of the ledger, Lady Mustang Danielle Thomas sped to a first-place time of 12.48 in the 100 meters. Other big winners that set new area standards in the girls’ field included Beaumont Ozen’s Sojourner Brown in the 800 meters (2:22.00); Beaumont West Brook’s Kristina Landry in the discus (121-4) along with the PA Memorial 800-meter relay unit (1:44.01) and the Ozen 1,600-meter relay unit (4:02.55).
