  2. Lady Bulldogs win in OT, force title game Tuesday By Tom Halliburton The Port Arthur News NEDERLAND -- Just like in any other sport, great soccer players make big plays at the biggest moments. Nederland's Megan Melancon seized Friday night's biggest moment. Fourteen seconds into the second 10-minute overtime period, the Lady Bulldogs senior midfielder weaved her way past two defenders and fired a low game-winning shot from the right angle to give Nederland a 1-0 victory and force a rematch for the 38-4A girls district championship. All these players, coaches and fans will reconvene on Tuesday in the new Reservation at 7 p.m. A third sibling in her own family to play four years in Julie Johnson's program, Melancon took the ball outside the 18-yard box and came toward Lady Indians' goalkeeper Breanne Martin on the dribble, unloading a shot toward the left side of the net. Martin lunged for it but the ball reached its appointed destination. Melancon's shot enabled Nederland to improve to 16-5-3 and 7-1, amassing seven shutouts in their eight district games. Stopper Morgan Morrison, sweeper Lauren Washburn, goalkeeper Bianca Garza and the Nederland defenders prevented PN-G (17-3-1 and 7-1) from scoring for the only time during this regular season. "She just controlled the ball, juked a couple of defenders and fired off a nice shot," Johnson said after the winning goal. "I thought our girls moved the ball around really well. It was a great effort. Our girls were very determined. We created a lot of opportunities tonight." The shots on goal looked dead even going into the second overtime, 12-12, with Nederland's defense able to negate PN-G's speed more on Bulldog Stadium's grass surface. Lady Indians' coach Aimee Bates cited that need to accent her team's speed more in the third meeting. "We need to utilize our speed a little better," Bates said. "On a scale on 1 to 10, regarding how well we executed our plan, I would say we were about a '6' and I thought for the most part that our defense worked but they got behind our defense some." A most agonizing moment for PN-G's fans and Bates occurred late in the first overtime when the officials disallowed a goal by Natalie Hager. A linesman inadvertantly signaled that PN-G's Chloe Chiasson had been ruled guilty of offsides. Then the linesman immediately permitted the action to continue. Hager scored seconds later before the officiating crew conferred before they decided to disallow the goal. "Our girls were real upset but that one call did not make or break the game," the PN-G girls coach said. "At times I would say that our offense was looking pretty good, but I wouldn't say that we were throughout the whole game." A major key to PN-G's 2-0 homefield win over Nederland had been the ability of Chelsea Horn and other Lady Indians' defenders to contain Melancon. Once again for more than 80 minutes, the PN-G defense accomplished that task to some extent. However Nederland applied some serious pressure on PN-G's net during the final 15 minutes of regulation. An excellent leaping catch by PN-G keeper Martin prevented a Nederland goal with 8:47 to play off a corner kick by Lady Bulldogs' sophomore Layken Richard. It all resumes Tuesday on the magic carpet of Indian Stadium

  4. Cardinals take two in rain-prone tourney Gabe Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — Only two games have been played at the Bridge City Cardinals’ Athletic Booster Club Tournament and the host team has won them both. Rain washed out Thursday and much of Friday was the same but not before the Cardinals grabbed two wins. The second game was not even close as Bridge City moved to 11-2-1 on the year with a 16-0 pounding of the Beaumont Central Jaguars. The first inning was a brutal one for the Jaguars (0-8) as the Cardinals scored 13 runs on four hits with four Central errors and seven walks. Two Cardinals also got hit by a pitch. Central starting pitcher Keonis Brazier threw 76 pitches in the first inning. The Cardinals did not record a hit in the first inning until Luke Rhodes hit a single, in his second at bat of the game. Twelve batters had been to the plate before Rhodes singled and the score was already 8-0. Blake Snyder had Bridge City’s second hit of the game after Dylan Mulhollan reached on a walk. Snyder took the first pitch he saw from Brazier over the right-center field fence for a three run home run to make it 13-0. The Cardinals batted around twice in the first inning and the score was still 13-0. Bridge City made it 14-0 after the second inning. Matt Hicks led off with a double to left field would later come in to score on an error. Hicks then drove in Blake Hubbard in the bottom of the third to make it 15-0. Hubbard had reached on a single to right. Jared Raggio scored the Cardinal’s final run of the night after singling and scoring on a Central error. Forrest Zoch pitched all three innings for the Cardinals and gave up two hits and on walk. Zoch struck out seven of the 11 batters he faced. The Cardinals earlier on Friday defeated the Lumberton Raiders 7-3. Hicks was 1-for-3 in the game with two RBI, a double, two runs and two stolen bases. Rhodes was also 1-for-3 with a run and a double while Hubbard was 1-for-1 with a run. Eric Matthews scored a run while Dustin Breaux finished 1-for-2 with a run. Grant Encalade had two RBI. The tournament will feature two games Saturday. Central will face Lumberton at 10 a.m. and then the Raiders and Cardinals will face off at 12:30 p.m.

  14. Lady Indians near 38-4A soccer title but not quite there By Tom Halliburton The Port Arthur News NEDERLAND -- Aimee Bates has not been able to throw the celebration party for her Port Neches-Groves girls soccer team just quite yet. There may be time for such a party this weekend, but not yet. With a thoroughly impressive 17-2-1 season record and a flawless 7-0 district mark, the Lady Indians deserve a party. Some might feel they should deserve at least a part of a District 38-4A championship right now. But with those accomplishments already in hand, PN-G could finish second in its league with one remaining regular-season game on its schedule. A 10-year-old girls soccer program without an outright district title of any kind so far, PN-G can secure its first-ever girls district soccer title with a win tonight in Nederland's Bulldog Stadium at 7 p.m. Perennial backyard champ Nederland -- a recent stretch of 14 consecutive district titles -- could still finish first as well. By winning tonight any old way (regulation, overtime or shootout), Nederland (15-5-3 and 6-1) would force a third meeting between the Mid-County neighbors on either Monday or Tuesday next week. It doesn't completely make tonight's regular season finale a district championship game but it's about the same difference. On the subject of different, these girls soccer teams have had to be rather weather-proof in the last couple of days. Girls such as Nederland's Jacie Bell and PN-G's Chloe Chiasson would have been sweating at practice on Wednesday as temperatures would leap to 80 degrees. Many of them were all bundled up during Thursday's practice as temperatures were dipping into the mid-40s. Both of these teams are outstanding and regionally dominant. Both will advance into next weekend's Class 4A girls bidistrict playoff round against Hardin-Jefferson or Silsbee. The 38-4A champion would open its playoff trek against Silsbee. The runner-up would meet Hardin-Jefferson. The caliber of PN-G's 2-0 victory over Nederland on Feb. 24 at Port Neches revealed the solid skill level of both teams. Bates stationed Chelsea Horn and fellow defenders in the vicinity of Nederland senior Megan Melancon to nullify Melancon's effectiveness at moving balls in the air. Excellent goalkeepers -- Bianca Garza of Nederland and Breanne Martin of PN-G -- made high-quality saves during the game, as they have all season. Martin and the Lady Indians have shut out 14 opponents. Garza and the Lady Bulldogs have blanked 13 foes. While the 4A regular season is scheduled to conclude tonight, the 5A regular season is set to finish on Tuesday night. Neither of Port Arthur Memorial's boys or girls squads will qualify for the post-season from District 21-5A.
