  3. Mustangs nab huge win against Crosby in Certa-Bearden Gabe Pruett The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — The West Orange-Stark Mustangs baseball team will remember Friday night for a very long time. The Mustangs came in as underdogs against the Crosby Cougars and left Ronnie Anderson Field 4-1 winners. WO-S (6-3) got a terrific performance from sophomore Zane Anderson on the mound. Anderson went all seven innings and gave up one run on six hits with one walk and nine strike outs. He assisted in making sure Crosby stranded seven runners throughout the game. “That is the best game I have ever pitched,†Anderson said. “It felt great. I knew I was going to have a good outing in the first inning. I was feeling all my pitches and hitting the corners.†WO-S Coach Jesse Riojas understands Friday’s win was not only big for the Certa-Bearden Tournament, it was a big win period. “This was a big win for our season,†Riojas said. “We can’t be satisfied but we will remember this win. This shows a lot for our team and this program. All the hard work is really paying off. These kids have been working hard since last May.†The game was tied at 1-1 before Kendall Veitch put the Mustangs ahead for good with a sacrifice fly which plated Darius Mitchell. Clayton Gearhart then drove in John Jefferson, who was running for Jordan Darnall, to make it 3-1 on a RBI single to right field. Anderson and Darnall teamed up on the Cougars in the top of the sixth to make sure a rally would not happen. Anderson struck out the first Crosby batter before Frank Rangel hit a single to center. Darnall caught Rangel trying to steal for the second out and Anderson took care of the rest by striking out Cody Ressler for the third out. Taylor Bonnin then led off the top of the sixth with a double to left. Justin Sparrow then moved Bonnin over to third with a sacrifice bunt. Bonnin made it 4-1 when Cody Hodge reached on a catcher interference call. The Cougars did load the bases in the top of the seventh on an error, walk and infield single. Anderson once again put the Mustangs on his back with a strike out to end the game. Riojas was also happy at the size of the crowd at the tournament, a tournament which was not played for several years at WO-S High School. “It’s all about Ronnie Anderson sitting there,†Riojas said. “It’s about the alumni hanging around and the crowd.†The Mustangs will face Dayton at 10 a.m. tomorrow and Kingwood Park at 3 p.m.

  5. Bobcats rally to thump Lumberton Mark Marshall The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — The Lumberton Raiders felt the feeling of déjà vu Friday afternoon at the Orangefield Tournament. For the second time this season the Orangefield Bobcats had to come from behind to beat the Lumberton Raiders and for the second time this season the Raiders saw Jacob Felts go deep on them. The Bobcats (9-1) rallied from being down 3-0 and went on to win 9-4. Junior Chase Angelle went the distance on the mound for OF and gave up four runs on six hits and struck out four. The Raiders (4-6-1) jumped on Angelle early and picked up three runs in the first inning. Wayne Stanley singled to lead off the inning and then advanced to second on a bad throw to first base. Ryan Hughes then singled to bring Stanley and Cory Lemaire home. Trace Freeman later singled to score West Bingham who had reached base on a walk and advanced on the Hughes single. The Bobcats answered right back in the bottom of the first with two runs of their own. Jace Statum got the inning started with a single and later came in to score when Felts singled to left field. Felts would score on a Quinton Evans sacrifice fly to right field. Lumberton struck for their final run in the top of the second. Stanley reached on a fielder’s choice and then advanced to second when Lemaire was hit by an Angelle pitch. Bingham then singled to bring Stanley home making the score 4-2 Lumberton. Angelle got the next two batters to fly out to end the inning. The Bobcats chipped into the Raider lead in the third inning. After two straight fly outs to left field, Angelle doubled and then came home on a Zach Peevey RBI triple to left field to cut the lead to 4-3. Quinton Evans then flied out to strand Peevey at third. Orangefield tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth. After a Josh Watson single, Derrick Evans and Statum both walked to load the bases. Jonathan Deramus then hit a grounder back to the pitcher but the throw to home was off and Watson came in to score. Felts then hit into a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning and leave the bases loaded. The Bobcats took the lead in the sixth inning with 5 runs. With the bases loaded Deramus doubled to the wall in the left center-field gap and Watson, Derrick Evans and Statum all came in to score to give the Bobcats a 7-4 lead. Felts then homered to left center-field off of Lumberton relief pitcher Trace Freeman to make the final score of 9-4. Angelle and Peevey both went 2-2 at the plate to lead the Bobcat offensive attack. In other action from Friday the Bobcats took down the Central Jaguars in the 11:15am game by a final of 9-1. The late game on Thursday night saw the Bobcats suffer their first defeat of the season as they fell to 2A preseason #1 Buna 8-7. Orangefield will play in the consolation game today at
