Ozen 65, PN-G 48 PORT NECHES — The Port Neches-Groves Indians could not pull off the upset. Even with Ozen's Willie Jefferson, a 6-7 senior forward, suspended, the Tribe could not muster enough defensive energy in the second half to claim a much needed victory. Holding onto a seven point lead going into the second half, Ozen outscored the Tribe 26-14 in the final 11 minutes of the contest. PN-G had the Panthers lead trimmed to four points with about three minutes left in the third. But that's when the wheels came off, according to head coach Pat Abel whose team fell out of the playoff race with the loss, as they dropped to 15-15 overall and 6-7 in District 20-4A. At 6-7, the Tribe trails 8-5 Central by two games with one game remaining, making it mathamatically impossible for PN-G to crack the postseason.

Dogs hold off Pirates PREP BASKETBALL The Port Arthur News NEDERLAND – A motivated and scrappy Vidor club tried as hard as it could to spoil Nederland's senior night, but the Bulldogs outscored the Pirates 10-5 in the final minutes of the fourth quarter to claim a 55-50 victory on Friday in the Dog Dome. Twice the Bulldogs tried to deliver knockout blows to Vidor but the relentless Pirates continued to plug away, recovering from two, eight point deficits in the second half and actually tied the game at 45 midway through the fourth. In the end, there was just too much of Nederland's Dionte Forney, Josh Dean and Chris Hammond, as Forney had 16 points and 15 rebounds, Dean had 14 and Hammond had 11. Also for Nederland, which improved to 21-11 overall and 9-4 in District 20-4A, Francis Torres had nine points. The Dogs hit eight 3-pointers for the game but went 10-for-20 at the line, which allowed the Pirates to keep things close. For Vidor, which fell to 2-11 in league play, Jared Williamson had 14 points and brother Jacob had 13. After Friday's results, in which Livingston beat Central, Nederland and Livingston are tied for second place at 9-4 while Central fell to 8-5. Each team has one district game remaining. Nederland will travel to 1-12 Lumberton, Livingston will travel to Vidor and Central will host PN-G. All three teams have clinched playoff spots along with Ozen, who won the district with a 12-1 record. In the event of a tie for either second or third place, the tied teams will decide to play an extra game or flip a coin to determine which team is seeded where. -
Galena Park North Shore boys 5, PA Memorial 1 PREP SOCCER The Port Arthur News GALENA PARK -- Port Arthur Memorial stepped up in class Friday night and found Galena Park North Shore owned way too much speed. The Mustangs (8-5-2, 1-0) dominated shots on goal and basically offered the Titans a different level of competition that the Port Arthurans had faced so far.

*POST FRI. FEB 13/SAT. FEB 14 TRACK RESULTS HERE*

NEDERLAND – Paris Collins and her potential may be catching up to each other before long. The 18-year-old Port Arthur Memorial senior has aspired to greatness in the hurdles ever since when she watched Jamaal Charles master the event for the Titans. That’s about the time when LeRoy Leopold and Ora Smith retired and Port Arthur adapted to a rebuilding mode in track and field. The PAISD had to be patient while a new quarter-million dollar synthetic track surface finally opened last April. When the 45th Nederland Bulldog Relays unveiled the area season under ideal weather conditions Friday, Collins served notice that 2009 had to be her year…. Guess what? It just might be, too. Call Paris a work in progress. Call Memorial’s boys and girls a work in progress as well. Yet there’s ample reason for an optimistic track outlook in Port Arthur again… after a lean stretch of recent years. It’s a bit different progression in Port Arthur, Mid-County and Beaumont than it is for Vidor pole vaulter Jared Parker. Clearing 15-9 last May to win the 4A boys gold medal at the 97th UIL state track and field championships, Parker made a most auspicious debut in Friday afternoon's sunlight by clearing 15-6 and winning the competition by a full four feet. Parker climbs a much different mountain than most area tracksters, but he wants to excel the same way that Paris Collins does. And Paris wants it bad. Collins swept to gold medals in the hurdles, covering the 100-meter hurdles in 16.99 and the 300-meter hurdles in 49.22. She did not get pushed that strongly in her heats, yet she dipped under 17 seconds in the sprint race and under 50 in the longer event. There’s no doubt that the new all-weather surface has helped Paris to be closer to tip-top shape in mid-February. “It’s made a positive change, that’s for sure,†Collins said. “We can practice longer, and get our warm-ups in better. Now that I’m a senior, I have to work harder to get my scholarship… I have to work harder to reach my goals. I have to be more serious about everything I do.†It’s great to see Port Arthur nudging its way back onto the area map. That dedication looked obvious when Paris emerged strong out of her blocks in the 300-meter hurdles. She said she had pushed herself harder, yet this young lady has more progress that she can make in the next 10 weeks. Namely, Paris has an excellent change to get physically stronger in the coming weeks. “I’m about the same when it comes to strength,†she said. “But I’m working harder. I know that I can be way better than I am now.†Memorial coach Sandra Bradford has coached some good ones, too. She has noticed a more dedicated version of Paris Collins. “This is her year,†Bradford said. “It’s now or never.†Bradford’s team won eight events against a good caliber Nederland field. The best of the Golden Triangle arrived, plus the addition of Barbers Hill and Pasadena South Houston toughened the challenge. While Vidor’s pole vaulter owned the head of the class, several other excellent area numbers filled the boys division. Some of last year’s premier area performers showed signs of being ready. They included Deweyville’s Joe Dooley in the 800 and 1,600, Ozen’s Jarrade Lee in the shot and discus, and a PA quarter-miler Michael Johnson opened the season with a first-place time of 51.06. Most of the area schools will run next Friday at Little Cypress-Mauriceville. Port Arthur Memorial will travel to Humble and compete in the Zoe Simpson Invitational next Saturday at Kingwood. Angelle, Bobcats bury Bridge City Van Wade The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — Orangefield senior Tyler Angelle turned Senior Night at Bobcat Gym into his own shooting exhibition. Angelle, known for his markmanship, lit up Bridge City for 24 points. He hit six three-pointers on the night, including five in the second half to lead the Bobcats to a convincing 60-37 victory over the Cardinals to keep their playoff hopes alive. The Bobcats (18-14, 4-5) will visit West Orange-Stark to face the Mustangs (21-10, 5-4) Tuesday night. Orangefield has to win that game to force a third-place playoff game for the final postseason spot out of District 21-3A. It was the same story for the Cardinals (15-18, 0-9). They fought the Bobcats hard for three quarters then fell off the pace in the final eight minutes. In the two schools’ three matchups this year, Orangefield has outscored the Cardinals 66-23 in the fourth period, including 22-7 Friday night. Leading 19-16 in at halftime, the Bobcats stretched their lead to 38-30 at the end of the third as Angelle busted loose for three three-pointers, all coming from the left side or left corner. Bobcat junior Zach Hayes scored six of his 12 points in the period. Hayes finished with a double-double, adding a game-high 11 rebounds as well. The Bobcats scored the first eight points of the fourth period as Angelle ripped two more treys and Logan Moss scored a nice move inside, pushing the lead to 46-30 and the Bobcats never looked back. Post Tanner Girouard led the Cardinals, scoring 10 points and tearing down a team-high seven rebounds. Will Veillon had one of his better games in a Cardinal uniform, tallying nine points while grabbing six rebounds. Justin Pittman scored six points for the Cardinals, who were outrebounded 35-28. Post Stefan Addison had eight points and five boards for the Bobcats while Casey Sparks pulled down six rebounds. The Cardinals finished with 21 turnovers while the Bobcats had 18 miscues. Orangefield drained 18-of-28 from the free-throw line while Bridge City was just 4-of-12. The Cardinals look to close the season on a high note when they welcome Hamshire-Fannett to Cardinal Gym Tuesday for Senior Night.
