Nederland, LC-M tied after Lady Dogs win Tuesday Van Wade The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — Nabbing a playoff spot in the District 20-4A basketball race will have to wait a little bit longer for the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears. The Lady Bears, needing a big home win against Nederland Tuesday night at the Bear Cave, came up short at The Bear Cave as the Lady Bulldogs went on a 30-15 tear in the second half. Post Savannah Desmarais scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds, including 17 points in the second half as the Lady Bulldogs erased an 11-point halftime deficit to claim a 51-47 victory. LC-M (14-13, 6-6) now finds itself in a tie for the fourth-place spot with Nederland (14-14, 6-6) with two regular season games left. LC-M goes to third-place Livingston Friday and will host Vidor next Tuesday. Nederland goes to first-place Beaumont Central Friday and will host Livingston Tuesday. The Lady Bears can clinch a playoff spot if they win two games and Nederland drops one, or if they win one game and Nederland drops two. If both teams are tied at the end of the season, Nederland advances due to their two wins over the Lady Bears in 20-4A play. Reserve guard Shelly Conn put the Lady Bears up 47-45 with a smooth jumper from just beyond the free-throw line with 1:11 left. However, the Ladsy Bulldogs closed with the game’s last six points. A Taylor Carlson 10-footer knotted it at 47-47 with 0:50 left. Desmarais worked her magic inside, putting back a lay-in after a fierce rebounds to give the Lady Bulldogs a 49-47 edge with 0:28 left. Alicia Thevis then upped the lead to 51-47 after she put back in a missed free throw by Phoebe Falcon. Turnover hampered the Lady Bears all night as they committed 26, nine of them coming in the crucial fourth period. Katie Harrell had a superb all-around game for the Lady Bears, notching 14 points and nine rebounds. Ellen Williams added 11 points. The two combined for 21 first-half points but had just four after intermission, all coming from Harrell. Desmarais took charge in the third quarter, especially after the Lady Bears were saddled with foul trouble. She cut loose for 13 points in the period, most of them coming on slashing drives in the paint. The Lady Bears led 31-20 at intermission but slowly saw the Lady Bulldogs chip away behind Desmarais. LC-M finished with a 28-24 rebounding edge. Tiffani Thompson yanked down five boards for LC-M while Williams, Shelby Apperson and Hailey Christian added four apiece. Thevis, who had eight points, also added nine boards for Nederland, which committed 18 turnovers. Carlson finished with eight points and four rebounds. The Lady Bulldogs went just 9-of-18 from the free-throw line while the Lady Bears were 7-of-11. The Lady Bears went on a 18-10 second-quarter surge to take the nice lead at the half. Williams scored eight points in the period, including two three-pointers while Harrell tossed in six points.

OF defeats H-F; sets up rematch with H-J Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — The Orangefield Lady Bobcats did not play their best game ever on Tuesday yet it was enough. The Lady Bobcats got a nice double-double from senior Jessica Weldon who chimed in 14 points and dished out 10 assists in Orangefield’s 75-47 win over the Hamshire-Fannett Lady Longhorns (12-14, 4-4). Orangefield is now 22-5 overall and 7-1 in District 21-3A play heading into Friday’s rematch against Hardin-Jefferson. The Lady Hawks were 77-28 winners over Bridge City Tuesday as the Lady Hawks remained undefeated in district play. The Lady Bobcats exploded for 30 points in the fourth period after being up 45-32 after three. Olivia Wagner, who had 15 points in the game, hit for nine points in the frame and Weldon and Allie Beach each had five in the game’s final eight minutes. Weldon also finished with six rebounds while Beach added five. Orangefield also got great production from several bench players who stepped in for two players out due to sickness, Marissa Wyatt and Morgan Taylor. Kacy Juneau finished with seven points, four rebounds, five assists and three steals while Ashton Wagner added seven points and three steals. Aimee Scales had a terrific second half and finished with six points, seven rebounds and five steals while Kasidy Hayes finished with six points and six rebounds and Carly Rucker added four points and two assists before leaving with an injury. Scales had four points, three rebounds, three steals and a block in the third period alone. Hamshire-Fannett was led by Danielle Johnson’s 10 points. Kindra Wright added nine points and eight boards while Courtney Pruhomme and Ashley Austin each had eight points. The production from Scales in the third was much needed as the Lady Bobcats entered half-time nursing a 29-20 lead. Orangefield had turned the ball over 14 times in the first half yet then only three times in the third. The Lady Bobcats outscored the Lady Longhorns 16-12 in the third before blowing out the visitors in the fourth. Orangefield, which forced 30 turnovers on the night, outscored Hamshire-Fannett 30-15 in the fourth. The end of the first period and start of the second were the main differences in the game. Hamshire-Fannett was up 11-7 midway through the first before Orangefield went on a 8-0 run to lead 15-11 after the game’s first eight minutes. The Lady Bobcats then started the second on another 8-0 run as Hamshire-Fannett did not score until there was 4:30 left showing on the clock before the break. Orangefield was up 23-17 at that point. Orangefield was 12-for-26 from the free throw line while Hamshire-Fannett was 14-for-22. Tuesday night marked the second time in three games every Lady Bobcat scored.
