  5. Lady Rangers lose to Port Neches-Groves By Robert Chambliss Correspondent Published January 31, 2009 Sterling’s girls’ soccer team lost Friday night’s non-district game against Port Neches Groves 7-1. Leading the Indians to their victory were Natalie Hagar and Anna Hunter with two goals apiece. The Indians struck first with Natalie Hagar’s first-minute goal after a miscommunication between the goalkeeper and the defender. All was good for the Rangers after that until the 22nd minute when the Indians’ Megan Elam shot a ball from 25 yards out and it went in. After surrendering the second goal, the Lady Rangers then gave up two more goals in the next two minutes. In the 34th minute, the Indians shot a ball from the six yard box, got the rebound off the save, and tapped in the sixth goal. And finally in the 36th minute, the Rangers yielded one more goal off a goalie throw-in mistake. In the second half, the Lady Rangers showed the fight inside them. They out-shot the Indians 9-8, and outscored them 1-0. Sterling’s goal came in the 51st minute by Elizabeth Torres’ header off of a Denise Chavez cross. “Injuries play a big role in this game, and the games ahead,†said Sterling head coach Rene Cosby. “We have six hurt players including our starting goalkeeper, but we still show fight.†“In the second half we gave a good effort. We played hard, and overall, I think we played pretty well. After going down by that much teams normally just throw in the towel, but these ladies are different. They kept fighting until the buzzer rang.†The Lady Rangers, now 7-9-1, will play their next couple of games with a hurt team, but fighting hearts. “We have to be thankful that there were no more injuries tonight,†Cosby said. “We look confident now, and I think that we will have a good next game.†The next Lady Rangers game is Tuesday when they host Manvel at 7 p.m. S
