WO-S' Robinson, Franks make All-State unit Van Wade The Orange Leader West Orange-Stark defensive end Kevin Robinson and recevier/return man Trey Franks were selected to the Second Team Texas Sportswriter’s Association All-State Class 3A Team that was announced on Wednesday. It marked yet another honor for Robinson, who was a First Team All-Stater on the Texas Sports Editor’s Team released earlier this month. Robinson was also the recent winner of the Willie Ray Smith Award as Southeast Texas’ top defensive player. Robinson led the Mustangs with 107 tackles, the first defensive end to ever do so in school history. He also notched seven sacks, 10 quarterback pressures. He caused four fumbles, recovering two and also blocked five kicks. Franks was selected as a kick returner. He averaged 16.8 yards a punt return and had a touchdown and also averaged 33 yards a kickoff return and brought one of those back for a score. He was WO-S’ leading reveiver for the season, catching 34 passes for 605 yards and five TDs. The Mustangs also had two Honorable Mention selections in defensive lineman Stephen Cook and linebacker Robert Jiles. The only other District 21-3A player to make the squad was Hamshire-Fannett guard Sequoia Harry. Carthage running back Dwight Smith grabbed offensive player of the year honors The 220-pound Smith, who led Carthage to the Division I state championship, rushed for 2,820 yards with 41 touchdowns. He rushed for 1,345 yards in the playoffs with 23 touchdowns, including 267 yards and five scores in the title win over Celina. Giddings defensive back Xavier Daniels earned defensive player of the year honors. The 170-pound Daniels had 85 tackles and 15 interceptions. Prosper’s Kent Scott grabbed coach of the year honors. Several Southeast Texas products made the Class 2A TSWA list. Newton linebacker Mike Jenkins made the Third Team along with Kirbyville offensive tackle Robert Burge. kfdm.com The Hardin County grand jury has decided not to indict three Silsbee High School football players who were charged with sexually assaulting a cheerleader during a party, according to District Attorney David Sheffield. The grand jury heard about three hours of testimony Monday before voting to no-bill Christian Rountree, 18, Rakheem Bolton, 17, and a 16 year old juvenile. They were accused of sexually assaulting a Silsbee High School cheerleader last October during a party at a home in Silsbee. "The action by the grand jury ends the matter unless something such as newly discovered evidence arises and necessitates presentment of the case to this or another grand jury," said Sheffield. Sheffield told KFDM News everyone involved in the case is a victim of underage drinking and an extreme lack of adult supervision. "Because everyone had been drinking, it would have made it difficult to prove the allegations raised in this case," said Sheffield. "Everyone's memory and degree of accuracy in their recollections would make it tough to prove." A woman at the home where the party took place faces misdemeanor charges of making alcohol available to minors. "I've been astonished about how many adults we've had throwing parties and allowing alcohol to be consumed by minors. They don't have the maturity to handle alcohol in these situations," said Sheffield. Sheffield says because the players and the cheerleader are no more than three years apart in age, state law prevents prosecution for sexual assault if the grand jury cannot determine consent. He says if the age difference had been greater than three years, state law allows for prosecution of sexual assault, even if there's consent. "The case has deeply divided the community of Silsbee and especially Silsbee High School." Sheffield strongly warns that any retribution, threats or harassment of the victim could result in 3rd degree felony Retaliation charges being filed. If indicted and convicted, the teens could have faced up to 20 years in prison.

UUUMMMMMM WO-S board member explains late arrival Tommy Mann, Jr. The Orange Leader ORANGE — The wheels on this bus just keep going round and round. For the third time in four meetings, the West Orange-Cove Consolidated Independent School District once again voted on whether or not to continue a long standing program of transporting students home via school bus following extra-curricular activities such as games, practices, and other UIL-related events. For the second time in seven days, the school board reached a 3-to-3 tie on the issue. Here is where the most recent issue surfaces. The late arrival of West Orange-Cove school board member Eric Mitchell led to another stalemate vote on a transportation cutback issue in the district, which has been a topic of discussion for more than two months. Less than one minute after the other six school board members made their votes known and moved on to the next agenda item, Mitchell strolled in through the standing room only crowd to take his seat at the table. However, reports have surfaced that even though Mitchell arrived late to Monday’s meeting, he was seen in the Administration Building’s foyer several minutes prior to the board members voting while the discussion was taking place. “Yes, I was there while the meeting was taking place,†Mitchell said. “I had my grandbaby with me, and I was waiting on my wife to arrive and pick our grandbaby up.†Mitchell voted against rescinding and re-instating the transportation program at the Jan. 20 meeting. “I stayed out front because I had missed the deliberation part of the meeting,†Mitchell added. “I didn’t feel it was right for me to vote on the issue when I was not part of the discussion. Everyone already knows how I voted at the last meeting.†Board member Nancy Byers, who was absent from the Jan. 20 board meeting, voted against re-instating the transportation program Monday. Even though Monday’s meeting ended with a tie vote, just as the Jan. 20 meeting did, Byers’ decision makes her the fourth of seven board members against re-instatement of this program. -

PN-G gridder turned Marine isn’t pleased with what he reads Bob West column for Wednesday, jan 28 The Port Arthur News Everybody in Port Neches and Groves, it seems, has an opinion on whether Matt Burnett should or should not have been moved out of his position as head football coach at Port Neches-Groves. Readers of the Port Arthur News, of course, know that if the decision had been made by Tom Halliburton or myself Burnett would still be the head coach. What’s done is done, however, and it’s time to move on. For the sake of future football players at PN-G, and other schools in the area making coaching hires, I hope the people on the school board get it right. Not for themselves and the fans, but for the kids who make the sacrifices, develop bonds with their coaches and will someday reflect back upon adults whose decisions impacted upon their lives. ................
