  10. LC-M's Fontenot lifts up team Van Wade The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — It was a fun day for Little Cypress-Mauriceville junior lifter Maegan Fontenot and her Bear teammates Thursday as LC-M High School hosted the Bear Iron Powerlifting Meet for the first time in years. The Bears and Lady Bears were there along with girls and boys teams from Anahuac, Evadale, Liberty and Kountze. Fontenot, the state champion in the 105-pound Class 4A Division last year, was thrilled about having a home meet. “I love to travel to meets but it’s glad to finally host one,†said Fontenot. ‘Coach (Mack) Malone has done a great job getting this going.†Malone, LC-M’s powerlifting coach, has been proud of his squad thus far this season. “I’ve got 15 kids out, 12 boys and three girls,†said Malone. “They’ve all worked so hard this year. They get better each and every day and that’s what you like to see in powerlifting. I’m just as proud of our three girls as I am of all the boys.†Fontenot has a great run in Lady Bear Iron uniform. Last season at state, she strolled to the 4A state crown in her weight class. Not only that, she was the top lifter in her weight class in all five classifications. She broke the state squat record with a 320-pound lift and later went on to set a state-record total lift of 715 pounds for her division. “I really worked hard to achieve that last year,†said Fontenot. “I’ve moved up in weight class (123-pound division) this year and there’s more challenges ahead because there are so many more competitors in that class.†Fontenot was busy during the Thanksgiving break in late November when she ventured to West Palm Beach in a national meet. She set a new world record for the 114-pound weight class when she squatted 330 pounds. She weighed 110 pounds at the time, meaning she lifted three times her body weight. “I met so many great people at that meet,†said Fontenot. “It’s hard to lose and that’s a lesson I learned because I was so used to winning. I was able to associate with people from all over the world and I learned a lot about myself.†Fontenot loves the sport and the petite LC-M cheerleader wouldn’t change anything in the world as far as competing in the sport. “It’s fun and it helps me stay fit,†said Fontenot. “It breaks certain stereotypes about girls my size. We can compete just as hard and as well as anybody else.†Full results of the LC-M Powerlifting Meet will be in Saturday’s edition of the Leader.
  11. Published January 22, 2009 09:29 pm - Danaher, Vance top PN-G applicants By Tom Halliburton The Port Arthur News PORT NECHES -- Dr. Lani Randall reaffirmed Thursday afternoon that she intended to recommend a head football coach/athletic direcotr to the Port Neches-Groves Independent School District board of trustees at their next scheduled meeting on Feb. 10. Complying with the Texas Attorney General's orders to comply with five Freedom of Information requests from area media outlets, the PNGISD schools superintendent submitted a list of 35 applicants for the head coaching position, vacated last month when the school's winningest coach ever -- Matt Burnett -- was reassigned by the district. The 51-year-old Burnett accepted a newly-created position of outdoor athletic complex coordinator and attendance officer at a Nov. 25 board meeting. Dr. Randall denied any truth to several highly circulated rumors that have swirled through various segments of Jefferson and Orange County regarding the coaching timeline. One rumor indicated that the PNGISD superintendent planned to submit the name of the new head football coach at a special called board meeting next Monday. "There's no truth to that whatsoever," Dr. Randall said. "I plan to be in Austin on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week to attend a Superintendent's conference." Another rumor suggested the PN-G coaching process had been narrowed down to five semifinalists and that the coach would be selected from that group during this weekend after interviews were conducted at undisclosed locations on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Once again, the PN-G Schools leader shot down that such a plan was the case. "If you look at the search timeline that we gave to you, we are just where we said that we were on our list," Dr. Randall said. "We have not begun to narrow down a list of finalists or semifinalists at this point." The early list of 35 applicants who were mostly unrecognizable, even to a couple of area head football coaches, contains a pair of names who have enjoyed heavyweight success at the state-wide level. Phil Danaher built a South Texas empire at Corpus Christi Calallen for the past 24 seasons. The 60-year-old native of St. Joseph, Mo., ranks third on the state's all-time career coaching victories list with 344 wins, 88 losses and 4 ties and currently stands as the state's winningest active coach. Jerry Vance has gone 28-1 in the past two seasons at Liberty Hill, guiding the school to 3A state championships in 2006 and 2007 and state semifinals in 2008. His eight-year head coaching record is a superb 89-18. Vance was selected the state's coach of the year in 2007 with a team that scored at least 33 points in every game.
