PN-G'S Reservation eyes the finish line MIKE TOBIAS The Port Arthur News PORT NECHES — If you build it, they will run. But unlike the cornfield-lined baseball diamond in Iowa, Port Neches-Groves’ Reservation will have the spirit of past Indian athletes looking down with envy and pride as the school begins competition on a brand new track and field surface. A project stemming from the May 2007, $123 million bond election, the new track’s asphalt sub-surface has not only already been laid, but has also undergone corrective measures. “Initially, the sub-surface our contractor laid down wasn’t exactly level,†Scotty Lewis, spokesperson for LANWalton program management services. “Which was unacceptable on our end, so what had to happen then was they had to grind down the sub-surface before we let them lay down the final top track surface. Which, grinding isn’t an unusual process in dealing with these types of tracks, but there was a lot of grinding that had to happen to get it right.†LANWalton, along with members of the PN-GISD administration and the district’s contractor, H. B. Neild & Sons, Inc., held a progress meeting Wednesday morning to discuss the status of the various district projects, including the stadium’s track and press box facilities. All parties are expecting substantial completion at The Reservation by the end of the month. “Substantial completion means everything is basically done,†Lewis said. “The space will then be ready for the district’s competitive use.†The track’s top surface is slated to be installed Thursday, just in time for Indians track and field teams to begin preparing for their upcoming season. “Just like the field, everyone here’s excited about the new track and stadium facilities,†head track coach Kyle Segura said. “The track should be ready in a week, and we’re all looking forward to that after last year, when we ran on the street all the time for practice.†Segura says along with the main track, the other field event sections, such as the long jump/triple jump and pole vault areas will be ready for use in two to three days. “Before, the shot put area was way outside the stadium, across the street on our old practice field,†Segura said. “Now, the discus is still out there, but the shot is now inside the stadium, so we’re getting things more centrally located and there won’t be as much running back and forth.†The Indians plan to host their first track meet at the new Reservation track on February 28, which also may mark the first time the press box will be able to be put to use. “Hopefully it will be done by then,†Segura said. “It wasn’t quite ready for football, so hopefully six weeks from now will be the first time we’ll have the option to have it.â€

Bear soccer squad stops Livingston, 3-1 Gary Bonneaux The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — Captain Seth Arteaga, and sophomores Garhett Bonneaux and Vance Foster each scored a goal to power the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears boys’ soccer team to a 3-1 victory over the Livingston Lions Tuesday night at Battlin’ Bear Stadium. A strong defense was led by goalies Max Perkins and Christian Diaz and defender Brett Heil to a near shut-out effort by the Bears. The game featured action up and down the field in a highly competitive contest on a cold night. Bears Coach Matt Wedel commented that “it was a nice, fun game to watch. I liked the way our team, especially our defense, played tonight.†“Livingston has some good players. It was a good, tough match.†The Bears scored the game’s first goal at the eighteen minute mark when sophomore Tommy Jones nicely placed a throw-in in front of the Lions’ goal. Seth Arteaga quickly took the pass and converted it into a close-range goal for a 1-0 Bears’ lead. Wedel noted that Jones “is good at throw-ins. It’s a strong point of his game.†The lead held until the Lions scored thirty-two minutes into the first half. After two shots bounced off the Bears’ goal, the Lions connected with a goal from five yards out. Two minutes later, the Lions drove the ball deep into the Bears side of the field. Perkins left the goal to successfully deflect two Lion shots. Brett Heil instinctively stopped a third Lions’ shot directly in front of the Bear’s goal. “The play by Brett was phenomenalâ€, said Wedel. “He had a phenomenal defensive game.†The first half ended with the score tied at 1-1. The Bears took a 2-1 lead at the fifty-seven minute mark when Bonneaux, surrounded by several defenders, converted a rebound in front of the Lion’s goal for a short lob shot over the goalie. Bonneaux’s poise impressed Wedel. “That was a pretty goal. Some players try to kill the ball when shooting at close range, but he put it in nice and easy.†The Bears’ final score occurred with approximately ten minutes left in the game as Foster received another strong throw-in from Jones at the twenty-yard line. Foster then blasted the ball to the back post for a goal. “He’s a smooth playerâ€, Wedel said of Foster. “He made a difficult shot and he made it look easy.†The Bears host cross-county rivals Vidor Pirates on Friday night at 7:00 p.m.

La Vega’s Parr arrested in Waco burglary By Paula Blesener | Tuesday, January 13, 2009, 01:04 PM For the second time this school year, La Vega High School star running back, 17-year-old Christopher Parr, has been arrested and is being booked into the McLennan County Jail. Waco police say Parr was arrested at school today and charged with burglary of a habitation for what officers say was his role in the Dec. 16 burglary of a unit at the Oak Tree Apartment complex on 800 Rambler Drive. Officers say shoes, jewelry, electronics and a pistol were taken from the apartment. In November, the McLennan County District Attorney’s Office decided not to prosecute aggravated robbery charges against Parr after he passed a polygraph test. The Bellmead teen was accused in August of robbing at gunpoint a 19-year-old man of his shoes and hat on the 5200 block of Concord Road in Bellmead. After Bellmead police arrested Parr the next day, he attended the district’s alternative school after bonding out of jail. Parr played in the Pirates’ playoff games.
