  2. West Brook soccer star set to face former team in Kelly tourney By CHRISTOPHER DABE January, 7, 2009 Michelle Sladaritz might have a different approach than most of her West Brook girls soccer teammates tonight. A former Kelly soccer player, Sladaritz will see some old teammates when the Bruins face Kelly in the opening round of the Kelly Winter Classic at the Chris Quinn Memorial Soccer Complex. "It will be fun," said Sladaritz, the Lamar University-bound senior forward who led the Bruins with 30 goals last season. The three-day tournament includes 12 teams. Local teams in the tournament are Bridge City, Hardin-Jefferson, Kelly, Memorial, Ozen, Port Neches-Groves, Vidor and West Brook. The teams are divided into three groups of four. Each group champion and a second-place team with the most points advance to the semifinals Saturday. The championship is noon Saturday. This is not the first time Sladaritz will face her old school. West Brook won an early-season contest against the Bulldogs last season, she said. West Brook's first game this season is tonight. This is the first week the University Interscholastic League allows teams to play regular season games. A tournament championship is this weekend's goal, Sladaritz said. A playoff victory, which West Brook failed to get last season, is among season-long goals, she said. "We've been practicing since Dec. 1, so we got a solid three weeks in before the Christmas break," West Brook coach Todd McBride said. "We're coming along. Our scrimmages have been going well, and we should have a successful season." Sladaritz is not the only person in tonight's game to see things from both sidelines. Kelly coach Brittney Burdick once coached at West Brook, where she coached Sladaritz's older sister, Hillary. "There are probably some girls excited about tonight's game," Burdick said. *** GIRLS SOCCER KELLY WINTER CLASSIC Chris Quinn Memorial Complex Schedule Today Group A Lake Charles St. Louis vs. Houston St. Pius, 5 p.m. Kelly vs. West Brook, 7 p.m. Group B Katy John Paul vs. Tomball Rosehill Christian, 5 p.m. Vidor vs. Port Neches-Groves, 7 p.m. Group C Ozen vs. Memorial, 5 p.m. Hardin-Jefferson vs. Bridge City, 7 p.m. Friday Group A Kelly vs. St. Louis, 9 a.m. St. Pius vs. West Brook, 11 a.m. St. Pius vs. Kelly, 2 p.m. West Brook vs. St. Louis, 4 p.m. Group B Rosehill Christian vs. Vidor, 9 a.m. PN-G vs. Katy John Paul, 11 a.m. PN-G vs. Rosehill Christian, 2 p.m. Vidor vs. Katy John Paul, 4 p.m. Group C Memorial vs. H-J, 9 a.m. Bridge City vs. Ozen, 11 a.m. H-J vs. Ozen, 2 p.m. Memorial vs. Bridge City, 4 p.m. Saturday Semifinals Group A winner vs. Top second-place team, 10 a.m. Group B winner vs. Group C winner, 10 a.m. Championship Semifinal winners, noon.
  3. Prep soccer season opens today By Tom Halliburton The Port Arthur News Some local high school soccer teams have awaited this weekend for a year, while others have really had only a handful of practice hours together. Ready or not, the 2009 UIL-sanctioned soccer games become official today with some area squads participating in weekend tournaments. Leave to one of the finest area soccer veterans to lead the way. Memorial girls soccer mentor Phil Mattingly takes his Lady Titans to Beaumont this afternoon for the Golden Triangle's opener, the Kelly Winter Classic. Memorial will test Beaumont Ozen today in the Kelly tournament at 5 p.m. Two hours later, the same tournament features an interesting matchup between Port Neches-Groves and Vidor at 7 p.m. Another area veteran, Nederland's Julie Johnson, takes her Lady Bulldogs back to Marble Falls for a 2:30 game on Friday against Lampasas in the Marble Falls tournament. The most demanding season opener may occur Friday for coach Don Sandell's PN-G boys when they will enter the Montgomery tournament against Houston Bellaire at 3 p.m. The last two teams to open the season -- Nederland's boys and Memorial's boys -- will collide with each other Friday night in Nederland's Bulldog Stadium at 7 p.m. The UIL's soccer realignment definitely has helped the playoff prospects for all six of these area schools. PN-G and Nederland are bunched with Beaumont Central, Beaumont Ozen, Little Cypress-Mauriceville and West Orange-Stark in the boys division of 38-4A with four of the six qualifying for the playoffs. Since WO-S does not compete in girls soccer, the 38-4A girls race contains only PN-G, Nederland, Central, Ozen and LC-M. So four of five advance into the post-season. Memorial is grouped in a six-team 21-5A league with West Brook, Lee, Sterling, North Shore and Channelview. Four of the six move on to the post-season. "I think our district lightened up a little bit, losing those three Humble schools," Titans head coach Brian Morgan said. "Humble is been so dominant in soccer." Mattingly is concerned that his defense holds up well enough although he likes his offensive trio of freshman Joanna Banda, sophomore Kristeen Reynolds, and junior Evelyn Torres.

  10. Guy Morriss New Football Coach at A&M-Commerce... Guy Morriss has been introduced as the next head football coach at Texas A&M-Commerce. Morriss replaces Scotty Conley, who was fired after a 24-27 record over 5-years in Commerce. Morris most recently has been the offensive line coach at Kentucky State, a Division II program, after his time as head coach in Waco, from 2003-2007 when the Bears were 18-40. Morris graduated from TCU in 1973, spent 15-years in the NFL with the Eagles, ('73-'83), and Patriots, ('84-'87). He was at the University of Kentucky prior to his tenure at Baylor, where he was 9-14 in 2-years. Texas A&M Commerce was 5-5 last season, but has a long history with 44-players who have played in the National Football League.
