Stangs, Pirates winners at BC tourney Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — While the host Cardinals found their home court a tough place to win at, the West Orange-Stark Mustangs were able to come out victors Monday at the Bridge City Classic. The Mustangs received 20 points from Quest Watson, 15 in the fourth, to take down the Port Neches-Groves Indians, 51-49. Travis Weathersbee led the Indians’ attack with 15 while Darius Davis added 10 in the victory for WO-S. The Mustangs are now 11-5 on the year. Brennan Doty added 9 points for the Indians. The Mustangs will face the Vidor Pirates at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday and Liberty at 2 p.m. PN-G will face Vidor at 2 p.m. Tuesday. The Indians did come back strong after the loss to take down Legacy, 77-34. The Indians stormed out to a 23-7 lead after the first period and were up 40-16 at the break. PN-G (7-8) did not let up after the break as it outscored Legacy 37-18 in the final two periods. Brent Pham led the Indians with 16 points while Doty added 13. Christian Kerr finished with 12 points. Weathersbee, Jamey Chatagnier and Spencer DeRon all had 10 points in the victory. The Indians will start Tuesday off with an 11 a.m. game against Santa Fe. Bridge City’s second loss of the day came after the Cardinals made a huge comeback against Liberty. The Cardinals, who were led by 15 points from Mason Ellis, were down 30 to the Panthers before falling 69-60. The Panthers led 19-7 after the first frame and then trailed 38-16 at the break. Bridge City outscored Liberty 14-13 in the third and then got hot in the fourth. After trailing 51-30 heading into the game’s final eight minutes, the Cardinals erupted for 30-fourth period points. The comeback was not enough as Cardinals shots started to miss and the Panthers were able to knock down free throws in the final minutes. Bridge City was defeated by Beaumont Central 63-37 in earlier action. Tanner Girouard finished with 15 points in the loss for the Cardinals. Vidor was a 51-49 winner over Beaumont Legacy in its first game of the day. Jared Williamson had 11 points for the Pirates while Jacob Williamson added nine. Curtis Lee finished with 19 points for Legacy. Vidor then turned around and defeated Liberty 59-44 behind 21 points from Jared Williamson. Jacob Williamson had 13 points in the victory. In other action Jasper took down Milburn Academy, 76-64, and Santa Fe defeated Huffman, 54-24.
