WO-S' Robinson earns All-State honor Van Wade The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — West OrangeStark senior defensive end Kevin Robinson keeps receiving nice honors. The District 21-3A Defensive Player of the Year earned First Team recognition on the 2008 Associated Press Sports Editors All-State Team that was announced on Tuesday. Robinson was the anchor on defense for the 21-3A champion Mustangs (10-1). He was part of a unit that allowed just 91 points and 147.4 yards per game, including just 58.5 yards a game on the ground. The Mustangs allowed just 20 second-half points all season. Robinson was an excellent pass rusher and was bullish against the run as well. He finished with 104 tackles, 16 of them for losses. He also caused four fumbles and recovered two. He also recorded seven sacks and had 10 pressures. Robinson’s Mustang teammate lineback Robert Jiles, who also had a superb season, made Honorable Mention All-State. The only other player from 21-3A that landed on the elite unit was Silsbee quarterback Jeremy Johnson, who made Honorable Mention. The Offensive Player of the Year went to Tyler Chapel Hill running back Matthew Tucker, who rushed for 2,260 yards and 27 touchdowns in just nine games. The Defensive Player of the Year was Giddings’ defensive back Xavier Daniels, who had 85 tackles and 10 interceptions and returned four kickoffs for touchdowns.

"Finally, the coach wanted to clear up once and for all why the Broncos are playing in the Alamodome. Let’s clear this up now,†said Stewart. “You had four teams last week that had to settle on a sight. My choice, if it came down to playing Sulphur Springs was SFA (Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches). Sulphur Springs did not want to play at SFA. So, Sulphur Springs decided they wanted to flip home and home – them in Texas Stadium and us somewhere in Houston. Well, we couldn’t find a neutral sight. Most of the schools have closed their stadiums down and were too lazy to do anything about it, so we couldn’t find one. It came down to the fact that Sulphur Springs wanted to be inside. The only school that would have really benefitted from playing in the Alamodome was Kerrville Tivy, but it was the only place all four schools, Dayton, Tivy, Everman and Sulphur Springs could agree on.†The coach explained why he was holding out for SFA. It was a truly neutral site between Dayton and Sulphur Springs and close enough to each they could drive up and play the same day. “I was also trying to look out for our community,†stated Stewart. I really want them to get to the game, but some things are just out of my control and we all could decide on San Antonio, so that’s where we’re going to be.†No matter who they play or where they play, it’s for the State Championship and for the Dayton Broncos it’s a first."
