  5. Bronco defense set for 2nd run at semifinals By Dave Rogers Published December 12, 2008 DAYTON – The Bronco defense is such a no-name defense, the unit hasn’t come up with a clever nickname, not even a gimme like “No Name Defense.†“We are a little bit under the radar,†admits Dayton junior outside linebacker Evan Brown. “No Score Defense†might be fitting. The Bronco stoppers are allowing just 15 points a game this season. “We try not to let them score,†the 5-foot-11, 185-pound Brown said. “That’s our job.†That lunch-bucket mentality has been a key to Dayton’s success throughout a 12-1 season. Needless to say it figures to be big again this week. The Broncos take on a 12-2 Kerrville Tivy team that is averaging 424 yards and 41 points per game in a Class 4A Division II state semifinal Saturday at 2 p.m. at Georgetown’s Bernard Birkelbach Stadium. Brown is a rarity at Dayton, a returning defensive starter. Five returning defensive starters were kicked off the team for off-the-field infractions just as two-a-days began in August. “It was really unfortunate, because we already had people set in their positions,†Brown said. “But we had a lot of young talent and they’ve helped us.†One of those is junior linebacker Jordan Baxter. He leads the team in tackles with 82. Sophomore safety Xavier Baldwin blocked a field goal last week and ranks fifth on the team with 52 tackles. Brown ranks third on the team in tackles. His 55 trail only Baxter and senior safety Dylan Bethea, who has 79 tackles and two interceptions. “Evan Brown is No. 2 in his class right now,†Bronco coach Jerry Stewart said earlier this week. “He’s an outstanding kid who does a real good job playing outside linebacker for us. “He’s the one out there checking us in and out of our defenses.†Brown was on the field last year at Texas A&M’s Kyle Field when the Broncos played in the state semifinals for the first time ever. It was not a fun evening. Lake Travis took Dayton apart to the tune of 49-13 en route to the state title. The Broncos want no repeat of that calamity when they take on Tivy’s Antlers and their passing duo of quarterback Colton Palmer and receiver Logan Vick. “Last year, it was a matter of miscommunication,†Brown said. “We knew all our assignments, but on certain plays we didn’t execute when it was real crucial.†With one win needed for Dayton’s first state championship game appearance, two for a state crown, the pressure should be mounting on the Bronco players. After all, they’re one of only four teams remaining from the 64 that began the 4A “small school†bracket playoffs. “We’ve been here before,†Brown said. “We know the atmosphere, we know how things are going to play out.†And how is that? “We’re prepared,†Brown said, “so we’ll have a different result than last year.†Spoken like a true leader, a quarterback of the defense if you will. And next year? “He’s our heir apparent at quarterback,†Stewart said. And there, there will be no flying under the radar.

  17. OC swimmers fare well in Golden Triangle meet Tommy Mann, Jr. The Orange Leader NEDERLAND — — A chilly weekend was the perfect time to head to the pool, if you are a member of two area high school swim teams that is. Swimmers from Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School and Vidor High School competed in the Golden Triangle Invitational Saturday in Nederland against several larger area teams, including Beaumont West Brook, Ozen, Kelly, and Nederland High Schools, and made strong showings. Leading all local swimmers was 15-year-old Alex Dorman of LC-M as he placed second in the Boys 100 Yard Freestyle with a time of 58.14 seconds, just a stroke behind Chris Stockman of West Brook who finished first with a time of 57.77 seconds. Dorman also placed second in the Boys 100 Yard Backstroke with a time of 1:11.51. Another West Brook swimmer, senior Jared Baker, finished ahead of Dorman with a time of 1:07.50 Leading the Pirates swim team was Jarrett Cameron, 16, with a fourth place finish in the Boys 200 Yard Freestyle at 2:20.30. Brennan Hebert of Nederland High School claimed first place with a time of 2:11.24. Cameron also placed fifth in the grueling Boys 500 Yard Freestyle competition with a time of 6:46.67, which was well behind the 5:51.36 set by winner Adrian Hernandez of Pasadena High School. On the girls side of the meet, Ashely Mann of Vidor led a trio of team members with a time of 33.77 seconds and a ninth place finish in the Girls 50 Yard Freestyle. Fellow Pirates swimmers Jessica Cameron and Stephani Dyess placed 20th and 23rd, respectively. Fifteen-year-old Chasity Chapman of LC-M placed 18th in the same event with a time of 40.02 seconds, an improvement of more than one-half second on her season best. The winner of the event was Krystan Morrell of West Brook who set a blistering pace at 25.80 seconds, more than three seconds ahead of the runner-up. In the Girls 100 Yard Freestyle, Mann finished in ninth place with a time of 1:16.40. LC-M team members Chapman and Hannah McClendon finished 10th and 12th, respectively. Morrell of West Brook again left the field behind in her wake with a time of 58.38 seconds, more than eight seconds ahead of the second place contestant. Vidor swimmer Cameron placed fifth in the Girls 100 Yard Backstroke at 1:48.37, while Bears swimmer McLendon finished seventh at 1:55.34 and just ahead of Pirates swimmer Dyess, who claimed eighth. The Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School swim team will travel to Manvel High School for the annual Christmas Invitational for its next contest, where the team will even join others between events in singing Christmas carols. The Vidor High School swimmers will travel to Texas City for their next swim meet on Saturday.
