  20. Tivy looking to advance to state title game By Nick Cioci The Baytown Sun Published December 11, 2008 The Dayton Broncos play the Kerrville Tivy Antlers Saturday in the Texas High School State playoffs semifinals at 2 p.m. in Georgetown. The Antlers, whose nickname was gotten back when the school started, said Gail Howard, athletic secretary for Tivy High School, are 12-2 on the year. “The area is known for all the Deer we have,†she said. “We used to even have a live buck deer as the mascot back in the 1920’s and 30’s. But that’s really how we got our mascot was because of the abundance of deer we have in the hill country.†The Antlers, who finished in a three-way tie at 5-1 for first in District 27-4A, are playing in their first state semifinals since 1987 and 1988. Those years the Antlers played West-Orange Stark losing both games, 21-7 in 1987 and 28-14 in 1988. Quarterbacks Colton Palmer and Johnny Manziel, running back Quincy Kibbett and receivers Matt Ayala and Logan Vick on offense, lead the Antlers. Palmer has gone 155-of-244 passing for 2,013 passing yards and 15 touchdowns while also rushing for 309 yards and 13 more touchdowns. Manziel is 74-of-120 passing for 1,109 yards and 11 touchdowns while scampering for 835 yards and 15 touchdowns. The senior running back, Kibbett, has 1,232 yards and 17 touchdowns while Ayala has 733 receiving yards for 12 touchdowns and Vick has 1193 yards and seven touchdowns. Keaton Fornes, Michael McKenzie and Jake Waliky lead the Antlers defensively. Fornes has 135 tackles with one sack while McKenzie has 121 tackles to lead the team in tackles. Waliky led the team in interceptions picking off four passes during the season.
