BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) - An upper level storm system dumped as much as two inches of snow on some parts of Southeast Texas, creating icy road conditions and power outages, according to officials.
In Texas City, one wreck involved a police car in which the officer was not injured, The Galveston Daily News reported for an online story Thursday. Icy conditions were reported on the Emmett F. Lowry Expressway in Texas City and State Highway 146.
A winter weather advisory and freeze warning are in effect until 9 a.m. Thursday for areas east of I-45, said Sam Shamburger, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Lake Charles, La.
Power outages were reported in several Southeast Texas communities Wednesday but most people in the affected areas had their electricity restored by 10:15 p.m., The Beaumont Enterprise reported Wednesday in its online edition.
The cold front that barreled through Texas brought snow flurries to the region. Four bridges in Port Arthur were closed due to ice. They are the Intercoastal Canal Bridge on State Highway 87; the Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge on State Highway 82; the Veterans Bridge on State Highway 87 eastbound; and, the Rainbow Bridge on State Highway 87 westbound, according to a statement from the Port Arthur Police Department Thursday morning.
Air travelers trying to leave Houston Wednesday night were delayed while workers at the city's two major airports deiced planes.
Snow moved into the city late Wednesday afternoon. The last snow in Houston fell Dec. 24, 2004, according to Brian Kyle, lead forecaster with the National Weather Service in Houston.
"We want people to be warned to allow extra time for their Thursday flights," said Roxanne Butler, spokeswoman for Houston airport system.
In Beaumont, the snow set new weather records.
"Beaumont has had two inches of snow and that's the highest snowfall ever recorded in the month of December," Shamburger said.
"It is the earliest snowfall ever recorded in Beaumont. The previous record for the earliest measurable snowfall was Dec. 22, 1989," Shamburger said.
The surprise snow was not expected to last, according to the NWS.
"By sunrise most everyone should have warmer temperatures and highs in the mid to upper 50s," said Kyle.
