WO-S defense to meet Gilmer’s high-powered O Van Wade The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — Something will have to give when 2:30 p.m. rolls around at Abe Martin Stadium in Lufkin Saturday when the West Orange-Stark Mustangs (10-0) clash with the Gilmer Buckeyes (11-1) in the Class 3A Region III Division II regional semifinals. The Mustangs’ “Chain Gang†defense has answered every obstacle this season. However, their biggest challenge thus far awaits them Saturday in the form of the Buckeyes. The Mustangs have allowed just 56 points a game all season and just 121.3 yards a game. The wide-open Gilmer offense will check in pumping out 410 yards a game, averaging 225 yards on the ground and 185 through the airwaves. The Buckeyes have outscored their opponents by a whopping 557-192 margin for the year. Gilmer, who defeated the Jasper Bulldogs in 2004 in a Class 3A state title game, have dominated thus far in the playoffs by wiping out Diboll 54-0 and downing Mexia 50-36 last Friday night. The Buckeyes were led by tailback Jeremy Jackson in the Mexia win as Jackson roamed around for 191 yards while explosive quarterback Darian Godfrey zipped for 147 yards. The Buckeyes are balanced across the board offensively as they like to spread the wealth around. Godfrey has passed for more than 2,000 yards and has thrown touchdown passes to 15 different receivers. Meanwhile, Jackson is approaching the 1,000-yard mark for the year to lead a stable of running backs. The Mustangs are coming off two blowout playoff victories of their own, downing Coldspring 36-8 in bidistrict and then burying Caldwell 37-7 last Friday. Senior tailback Quintavious Garrett went over the 1,000-yard mark against Caldwell after he zipped for 217 yards and two TDs. He now has 1,117 yards on the season and has 369 yards on the ground in the two playoff wins. Senior quarterback Ortavious Hypolite zipped for 123 yards on the ground against Caldwell and has over 700 yards rushing this year. He's also passed for more than 1,300 yards and has 15 TD passes and just two interceptions. As the Mustang offense is pumping out a little more than 380 yards a game. The Buckeyes only loss this season came at the hands of Kilgore 28-14 in non-district. Gilmer went 4-1 in non-district, defeating Jasper 56-28, Rains 77-21, Liberty-Eylau 28-14 and Daingerfield 49-18. Gilmer defeated their district opponents by a 229-47 margin, downing Bullard 48-12, Tyler Chapel Hill 35-6, Spring Hill, 55-7; Gladewater, 43-8, and Tatum, 48-14. Defensively, the Buckeyes are giving up 292.2 yards a contest, 189.1 on the ground and 103.1 in the air. In their win over Mexia, the Buckeyes allowed 513 yards, 361 of it coming on the ground. The WO-S-Gilmer winner will face the Carthage-Rockdale winner in the regional semifinals next week. Stay up to date in the next few days as the Orange Leader will have more stories, stats and features on Saturday’s big matchup.

[Hidden Content] From a Gilmer Poster from the smoaky website 8 reasons why West Orange-Stark won't be a problem for the Buckeyes: 1. West Orange 33 Nederland 13 (Nederland finished season 4-4 in 4A) 2. W.O. 48 Little Cypress Mauriceville 7 (LCM finished season 0-8 in 4A) (Kirbyville and Jasper games cancelled) 3. W.O. 33 Brookshire Royal 7 (BR finished season 3-6) 4. W.O. 14 Silsbee 7 (Silsbee finished second in district at 4-4. The other 4 teams (Hamshire Fannet, Bridge City, Hardin-Jefferson, and Orangefield) (60-0, 66-7, 40-0, 67-0) all finished the season with records worse than 4-4. And get this. Silsbee only lost by a touchdown to West Orange-Stark. Silsbee only lost by 3 points to Diboll. Diboll as we know got beat by Gilmer last night 54-0 and by Carthage 62-28. West Orange probably would have had 2 losses in Jasper and Kirbyville had they been able to play those games and obviously didn't play anyone yet other than Silsbee. So the possibility of Carthage meeting Gilmer are improving! Go to the top of the pageReport Post +

you know the economy is bad when tiger woods gets laid off..... GM ends 9-year endorsement deal with Tiger Woods By TOM KRISHER, AP Auto Writer DETROIT (AP)—General Motors Corp. said Monday it is ending its nine-year endorsement deal with golf superstar Tiger Woods as the automaker continues to cut expenses and hoard cash while trying to survive the worst sales downturn in a quarter-century. The cash-strapped company said in a statement that it is looking to reduce costs, and that the world’s No. 1 golfer also wants more personal time as he expects his second child. Woods has endorsed GM products around the world and mainly has been seen in Buick commercials as the company tried to give the nameplate a more youthful image. He has carried the Buick brand on his golf bag since 2000, and his most recent promotion was to caddie for a contest winner for nine holes at Torrey Pines, where Woods won the U.S. Open this summer for his 14th career major. The endorsement deal, believed to be worth at least $7 million a year, was to end in 2009. Woods’ agent at IMG, Mark Steinberg, said the decision to end the relationship one year early was “absolutely mutual.†“It was a combination of things,†Steinberg said. “Tiger was looking to gain some more time, and certainly it was an opportunity for GM to reduce its spending with everything going on.†GM has been making dramatic cuts in advertising as it tries to conserve cash. The nation’s largest automaker spent nearly $7 billion more than it took in last quarter and has warned that, without federal help, it may reach the minimum amount of cash required to run the company by the end of the year. Mark LaNeve, GM’s vice president for North American marketing, said GM and Woods started discussing an end to the deal earlier this year, and it had nothing to do with the Detroit Three automakers’ quest for $25 billion in federal loans. But GM’s statement said the decision was made as part of “the search for budget efficiencies during a difficult economy for General Motors.†Buick said last week that it would be cutting back on its deal providing courtesy cars at PGA Tour events. GM is so concerned about costs that it cut advertising during the 2009 Super Bowl, although it still plans to sponsor the National Football League and likely air ads before and after the game. GM also has pulled out of the Oscars and Emmy Awards in 2009—the first time in over a decade that it is not running ads right before, during or after the two events. U.S. automakers, the single largest category of advertisers, cut their ad spending 18 percent to $1.37 billion in the second quarter compared with the same period in 2007, according to TNS Media Intelligence in New York. Foreign automakers also are trimming their spending on advertising in U.S. markets, with a 5.4 percent cut in the second quarter, for an overall 11 percent drop in U.S. auto ad spending to $3.27 billion, the 12th quarterly dip in a row. Woods has carried only two logos on his bag since he turned pro in August 1996. He was with Titleist through 1999 until Buick won a bidding war for its brand on a bag that gets more television time at tournaments than any other golfer. Woods has not played since season-ending knee surgery after winning the U.S. Open, and he is not expected to return until next year, most likely in early March depending on his recovery. Steinberg said he would “expect there to be some exposure on the bag†when Woods next plays. “I’ve got a few ideas, and we’re in the process of working through that,†he said. AP Golf Writer Doug Ferguson contributed to this report.

[Hidden Content] From a Gilmer poster from smoaky!! Talked to some of the coaches yesterday, and they thought WOS had the best defense they had seen since Atlanta in '03. That's high praise indeed. This game goes back once again to the defense. I just can't see Gilmer lighting up the scoreboard against WOS. If they win, it will be a low scoring affair. But Gilmer's defense (with the exception of the 2nd half against Mexia) has been excellent all year long. Can the defense keep Gilmer in the game, and will the offense break enough big plays to win? I have no problem with a Gilmer homer poster predicting WOS to win. I just hope that all the Gilmer players expect Gilmer to win. I definitely agree that the team that scores the most points will win. Such wisdom will soon make this board irrelevant.
