  8. Panthers wrap up 23-2A sweep From sports staff reports Baytown Sun Published November 15, 2008 ANAHUAC – Justin Albritton scored three touchdowns and Anthony Rivon two more Friday night as Anahuac downed Deweyville 38-13 to wrap up its hurricane-extended regular season with a perfect 6-0 District 23-2A record. The Panthers were waiting to find out when and where and against whom they’ll enter the playoffs next week in the Class 2A area round playoffs. District 23-2A drew a bidistrict bye in the latest UIL realignment, allowing Anahuac and Deweyville to reschedule their game that was lost to Hurricane Ike. The Panthers, 8-2 on the year and district champs for the first time since 2003, scored 31 unanswered points in the second and third quarter to break open a 7-7 tie forged when Deweyville’s Keeton Addison scored early in the second period on a 3-yard run. Albritton scored on runs of 39 and 14 yards and Jacob Pesina passed to him from 10 yards out to give Anahuac a 26-7 halftime lead. Rivon scored from 15 and two yards in the third quarter. Deior McNeil, who led all rushers with 90 yards on eight carries, had Anahuac’s first touchdown, a two-yard run, late in the first period.
  9. Crosby advances with win over Lumberton By Nick Cioci The Baytown Sun Published November 15, 2008 HUMBLE — The Crosby Cougars football team hasn’t won a postseason game since beating Houston Davis 50-28 in 2003. That is until Friday night. The Cougars beat Lumberton 31-21 in a Class 4A Division II bidistrict game at Turner Stadium to advance to the second round of postseason play. “It’s a huge win,†Cougar head coach Kevin Flanigan said. “The kids felt they could win and believed it when not a lot of people outside of our community felt they could. “It was a big crowd and the kids just responded well, especially defensively.†Senior Chance Casey, who hadn’t played in since Oct. 17 because of a hamstring injury and sophomore quarterback Dominic Merka, led the Cougars. Casey had five catches for 100 yards and three touchdowns while Merka went 12 of 20 passing for 180 yards and 13 carries for 110 yards. “I didn’t expect to have that good a game,†Casey said. “I’m just glad to be back. “It was fun.†Casey said he didn’t expect Flanigan to use him much. “I really thought he was just going to us me at receiver as a decoy,†Casey said. “But I knew I was going to play and he got me the ball and I was able to do things with it.†The key play of the game came after the Raiders had tied it up at 21 apiece in the fourth quarter. The Cougars got the ball after the kickoff and lost two yards on a Merka run. After missing Casey on second down, Merka and the Cougars were looking at a third and 12 from there 32. That’s when Merka stepped up and had his biggest run of the night a 55-yarder to give the Cougars the ball at the Raider 13, where they settled for a field goal to take a 24-21 lead. “It was real big,†Merka said, referring to his run. “It set the team up in a good position to get some points on the board.†After the kickoff, the Cougars defense stepped up and made a big play causing the Raiders sophomore quarterback Ryan Hughes to make an errant pitch on the option. Dylan Judy recovered the fumble for the Cougars on the 13-yard line, which the Cougars turned into seven more points after Merka found Casey in the end zone for the third time. The two teams battled back and forth in the first quarter, holding each other scoreless the first eight minutes, until Merka hit Casey for a 44-yard touchdown pass with 4:05 left in the first quarter. The Raiders answered that Cougar score, though, the next time they got the ball with Kyler Keith capping off a six-play 77-yard drive, scoring on a 33-yard run. The Raiders missed the extra point to leave the Cougars with a 7-6 lead. The Cougars followed that Raider drive with their own six-play drive, a 61-yarder, with another Merka to Casey score making it 14-6. Once again, the Raiders answered with a 10-play drive that ended with a Jacob Hanna 19-yard run to make it 14-13 Crosby. The Cougars took advantage of the first Raider mistake a fumble by Jacob Hanna in the third quarter to add to their lead. Merka found Xavier Frank on this hook up, an 11-yard strike to take a 21-13 lead. The Raiders answered back, this time on a 10-play drive that ended with a nine yard run by Hanna. Ryan Hughes ran it in to add the two for the Cougars to make it 21 a piece. The Raiders were led by Hanna, who had 24 carries for 150 yards and the two scores.

  13. Lady Bears run past Bridge City Van Wade The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — The Little Cypress-Mauriceville has some familiar faces back on the varsity basketball squad. Nine to be of fact. The thing about this year’s squad, last year’s experience. Looking like a team to possibly be reckoned with down the District 20-4A road, the Lady Bears improved to 2-0 on the season with an explosive 69-36 victory over the Bridge City Lady Cardinals at The Bear Cave Friday night. LC-M forced the Lady Cardinals (0-2) into 15 quick turnovers in the first period as the Lady Bears gained a 21-3 edge and never looked back the rest of the way. Guard Ellen Williams led a very balanced Lady Bear attack with 17 points and six rebounds. Hailey Christian worked inside for 15 points and seven rebounds. Amber Soileau pumped in 12 points. Post Tiffani Thompson notched a nice double-double, pouring in 10 points and yanking down a whopping 14 boards while fellow post Tayler Thompson had eight points and eight boards and Shelby Apperson contributed seven rebounds. “We’re still definitely a work in progress,†said Lady Bear head coach Amanda Ellerbee. “The key thing is all of them have improved so much since last season. We’re faster, quicker and stronger.†The Lady Bears forced the youthful Lady Cardinals into 35 turnovers and outrebounded BC 57-35. LC-M is utilizing full-court pressure and half-court traps more to their benefit this season with the added experience. Instead of being the hunted, they have turned into hunters. “We wanted to turn up the defensive pressure this year,†said Ellerbee. “We have kids that can put constant pressure on people. What makes it even better is that we’re so interchangeable. I’m fortunate enough to put five fresh legs in and take five out and we don’t lose anything.†Whitney Knippers spearheaded the Lady Cardinal attack with nine points and six rebounds. Sara McPherson had nine points and Mallory Guidry pumped in eight. Allison Angelle came off the bench to pull down a team-high eight rebounds while Jordan Royal snatched six boards. BC turned the table on the Lady Bears on the defensive end in the second half, forcing LC-M into 21 of their 38 turnovers after intermission but the Lady Cardinals shot just 14-of-61 from the field and connected on just 7-of-21 free throws. The Lady Bears struggled at the line as well, making just 11-of-27. BC got as close as 36-23 in the third period. However, the Lady Bears poured it on in the fourth period with a 23-10 run sparked by Williams’ nine points.
