Lady Longhorns oust Orangefield Gabe Pruett The Orange Leader NEDERLAND — It was only fitting the last shot of the night came from an assist by Danielle Johnson to Kindra Wright. The Hamshire-Fannett Lady Longhorns used the combination all night long against the Orangefield Lady Bobcats and it pushed the team into the regional finals. The Lady Longhorns (25-9) swept past the Lady Bobcats (20-11) in three games Tuesday in the Class 3A Region III regional quarterfinals at Nederland High School. Hamshire-Fannett won the match 25-14, 25-21 and 25-9 behind 25 assists from Johnson and 14 kills from Wright, both match highs. The Lady Longhorns will now face Robinson in the Class 3A Region III regional tournament in College Station starting Friday. "It has been such a weird year," Hamshire-Fannett Coach Debbie Peltier said. "I thought we had hit our peak then we had Hurricane Ike and now the girls are really meshing and trusting the person side by side." The Hamshire-Fannett victory ends a superb Orangefield season who locked up the final playoff spot out of District 21-3A with a play-in win over Bridge City. The Lady Bobcats then took out Liberty before having a bye in the area round. Junior Aimee Scales led the Lady Bobcats Tuesday night with eight kills while senior Allie Beach added six kills. Fellow senior Olivia Wagner had a team-high 14 assists. "I am very proud of the season our girls had this year," Orangefield Coach Kristin Holbrooks said. "It is a rough ending but it was an amazing way to get there." The Lady Bobcats simply had no answer Tuesday night for the powerful hitting of several Lady Longhorns hitters. Hamshire-Fannett's Shelby Mason finished with eight kills and Elizabeth Files had eight. Game 1 was close at 13-11 before Macy Howerton came to serve. Howerton hit for nine consecutive service points, including one ace and three kills from Files and two from Wright as the Lady Longhorns built a 22-11 lead. Files would hit for an ace to finish the game at 25-14. Game 2 was close all the way through and with Hamshire-Fannett up 24-20 Wagner set Beach for a kill to make it 24-21. A final Orangefield shot landed out of bounds to give Hamshire-Fannett the 25-21 win. Orangefield was then never able to recover in Game 3 as Hamshire-Fannett came out on fire. After the game was tied 1-1, Johnson hit for 10 straight service points as Orangefield had six errors in the stretch and the Lady Longhorns took a 11-1 lead. With Hamshire-Fannett up 22-8, Howerton hit for two aces to give the Lady Longhorns a 24-8 lead. One play later, Johnson found Wright to make sure the Lady Longhorns could punch their ticket into College Station. "Hamshire-Fannett is phenomenal," Holbrooks said. "I really do think they have a great chance to go to state. Our season is going to help with building us a phenomenal program." Peltier knows the Lady Longhorns have a lot of work ahead of them in College Station. "I really do commend Orangefield," Peltier said. "A lot of people say they are a scrappy team and it is true and I mean it in a positive way. They tip balls, dig out shots and are all over the place. I am not one who looks ahead but as I know right now Robinson is very tall. We are going to spend three days looking at how we can attack trees.

Kuhn, Vidrine chart paths for collegiate athletic careers By Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News A pair of Nederland standout athletes made reservations for their collegiate futures Tuesday afternoon in the coaches offices at the high school. Lady Dogs senior shortstop Ashleigh Kuhn signed with the Southland Conference's Northwestern State, while football and baseball all-star Jude Vidrine signed with Lamar University to play baseball. As a junior, Kuhn recorded a .373 average while slugging .507 with an on base percentage of .414. She had 53 hits including 41 singles, seven doubles and three triples, and led the team with 28 RBIs. Defensively, she played in 264 innings, tallied 50 putouts, 50 assists, and posted a fielding percentage of .962. Along the way, she helped lead her team to the state finals where the Lady Dogs finished as runners up to Aledo, which outlasted Nederland in a 15-inning bout. Nederland, which finished 30-10-1, also won the district title last season with a 14-0 mark, with Kuhn as their leadoff-hitter and shortstop. Kuhn said her ultimate decision to become a Lady Demon was that she really liked what she saw from the entire program and coaches. Nederland head coach Sissy Yeaman said Kuhn could not be a more deserving person. "She's a great student athlete who works diligently toward her goals. She works extremely hard. She's a very determinted indvidual. She’s a great leader and she means a great deal to her team. I could not be more proud and happy for her. She's just one of those people who will always be successful. She's never satisfied in that good way. She's going to do whatever it takes to be her best." Vidrine, a standout receiver for the playoff bound Bulldogs football team, and an all-district second baseman for the baseball team, shares many of those qualities with Kuhn. Vidrine, who will be a varsity player for the third year for Nederland when the spring rolls around, batted .329 with two homers, eight doubles and 26 RBIs as a junior in 2007. Brian Spell, who coaches Jude in both football and baseball, said Vidrine is a coaches dream. "He has tremendous work ethic," Spell said. "You never have to tell him to do anything twice. He goes to work every day, whether it's practice, a game, in season, off season, no matter what, he comes ready to work. “That goes for football and baseball. If you target something he could improve at, give him a time or two at the drill and he's got it down. He's willing to learn. He's smart. An outstanding leader by example and very goal oriented." Vidrine said while he is looking forward to playing for head coach Jim Gilligan and the Cardinals, he still has some unfinished business before graduating from Nederland. The second baseman said he wants to get the Bulldogs back to the playoffs. Nederland has missed the postseason in two straight seasons. Vidrine was also part of Mid-County Babe Ruth's 16-year-old All-Star team that finished as runner up in the World Series.

Titan basketball looks to move up By Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the first in a series of previews on area boys basketball teams. The Memorial Titans basketball program had a wild ride last season. It started with high expectations but between injuries and a district season long suspension to J'Covin Brown, Memorial went to battle with a very young and inexperienced group. The Titans finished tied for fourth, posting a 17-15 overall record and 7-7 District 21-5A mark. The Titans lost a close contest to Atascocita (41-39) in the league tiebreaker game, ending their season. It was not the year Port Arthur was expecting from the beginning. However, it was a season that possibly prepped the Titans for even bigger expectations this season. Port Arthur returns eight players who all started at one time or another last season. And the games they did not start, they at least saw valuable minutes. Led by JeKore Tyler, a senior wing who led the team with an average of 14 points per game, the Titans have been picked to finish in first place this district season by TexPrepBasketball. Joining Tyler are forwards Tevin Turner, Jordan Reno, Darius Harris and Jamarcus Jones. Jones, Harris and Turner all averaged seven boards per game last season. The Titans also have guards Shaquille White, Wendall Pierre and Clarence Thomas coming back. White averaged two steals and five assists in 2007-08. Memorial head coach Terrul Henderson said he feels as if White has really turned the corner as far as a mature point guard goes. Henderson feels really good about the entire program because of the offseason work his players have put in. "Bigger, stronger, faster," he said. "We've worked hard. We're more experienced. Last year, we had none of that. We had no depth. Because of situations, we had kids out there who had no real experience. This year, we're ready. This year, we're bigger, stronger, faster. "We hit the weights really hard. We're excited and we're ready. We have a long bench of experienced players." Memorial kicks off its season Friday at the Louisiana Jamboree, which is a one day tournament. The Titans will also play in the Lake Charles Classic, the YMBL Tournament and, of course, host the Gamble Classic, which will bring in a load of talent from schools like LaMarque, Eisenhower, Houston Jones, Kashmere, Sam Houston, Gulf Shores, Gelena Park and Memorial. The Gamble Classic is Dec. 29-30. The YMBL Tournament is set for Dec. 11-13. The Titans first home game will be against Nederland on Nov. 25. That game will be at 7:30 p.m. The Titans will be at Beaumont Ozen Nov. 18 for their first local game. Tip off against the Panthers is set for 7 p.m. Henderson said there are three clear cut phases to this season's schedule. The first phase, the preseason phase, has been completed and has left Henderson with "positive expectations." The next step is what he called the tournament season where the Titans will face a tough schedule of non-district opponents. The plan is to continue to work hard and hope to stay healthy during this second phase. Then there is the third phase, the all important part of the schedule that brings the most importance, the district schedule. The Titans will tip off 21-5A play at North Shore on Jan 16. All district contests are set to start at 7 p.m. Port Athur's first district home game will be against West Brook on Jan. 23. Henderson said he was not completely sure of what to expect from the other league teams but figures each team to be tough opponents. "This is always a strong district," Henderson said. "The key is staying healthy and keeping the intensity up. To never lose focus of our goals. I feel like we have quality players this season with average size and talent for Region III basketball. We have above average speed and very good depth. We have positive expectations this season for sure. We're really excited to get started."
