  1. That's Cleveland/Tarkington, Not Cleveland High School.
  2. BC puts 0-10 behind them with .500 2008 Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — Blake Hubbard could not hold back the tears. Last season the Bridge City Cardinals went 0-10. The Cardinals started the year off with a win over Liberty and soon after Hurricane Ike devastated the town of Bridge City. After Friday night, the Cardinals for at least one night put all the troubles behind them with a 43-27 victory over the Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns. The Cardinals end the season 4-4 and collected the team’s first home win since the 2006 season. “I am so excited,†Hubbard, a senior, said. “It is hard to even talk right now. We showed we could handle everything this team has gone through. Everyone has gone through hard times and now it feels good to go out with a win.†The Cardinals wasted no time in the game either. On the first play from scrimmage, junior quarterback Josh Lemoine took a snap and handed off to wide receiver Luke Rhodes on what looked like to be a receiver reverse. Rhodes instead pulled up and found fellow receiver Jerry Landry who hauled in the catch and scooted 61 yards for a quick 7-0 Bridge City lead. “We had worked on that in practice all week,†Rhodes said. “I just lobbed it up there and Jerry had to slow down a bit to get it.†Cardinals Coach Cris Stump was obviously more than proud of his 2008 Cardinals who never once talked about 2007 even when pesky reporters tried to bring it up along the way. “0-10 feels like a long time ago,†Stump said. “It of course is still in the back of our minds and is something we will always keep there. Like I have said we tried to never bring it up. I am so proud of these kids and our coaches on how they have handled everything this team has gone through. I can’t say enough about our senior leadership. I am proud of the way we fought through it all.†The Cardinals celebrated 22 seniors Friday on Senior Night at Larry B. Ward Stadium and also celebrated the impressive seasons by a few younger players. Freshman running back Matt Menard capped off his impressive year with 139 yards on 22 carries and three touchdowns. Menard finishes with 537 yards in 2008 with four touchdowns. Lemoine also showed great poise for the Cardinals all year long and finished the campaign nicely on Friday. The signal caller was 5-for-11 passing for 73 yards which brought his season total to 1,053 yards on the year. Lemoine also ran for 103 yards Friday night with two touchdowns. The night also belonged to a stingy Bridge City defense. Senior Zach Heinze picked off two Hamshire-Fannett passes while fellow senior Jared Raggio also intercepted a Jake Minaldi pass. Hubbard came up with a sack and senior Cody Eldridge blocked his fifth kick of the night, which Heinze ran back on a PAT for a 1-point Bridge City conversion to make the final score in the fourth quarter. The Cardinals, who had a hard time on defense in 2007, limited the Longhorns to 240 yards of total offense. Minaldi threw for 171 while the Longhorns rushed for 69 yards. “All the seniors are feeling good right now,†Hubbard said. “Last year now feels like so like ago. We were such a different team this year. It feels great.†The Longhorns tied the score at 7-7 late in the first half but Lemoine quickly put the Cardinals up for good. Bridge City needed only five plays to score as Lemoine dazzled on a 37-yard quarterback keeper to make it 13-7. Devin Bertran, who was perfect on all six of his PATs Friday, made it 14-7. After a Hamshire-Fannett punt, Menard was ready to leave his mark on the game in a hurry. The freshman scooted 38 yards for a touchdown on the drive’s first play and Bridge City took a 21-7 lead with 11:41 left in the first half. Lemoine and Mernard each added 1-yard touchdowns before the end of the first half as Bridge City led 35-7 at the break. Menard had Bridge City’s only touchdown of the second half. The Longhorns scored two special team’s touchdowns in the second half. Receiver Jeremy Pinder had an 85-yard kickoff return and Joe Brittain had a 15-yard fumble return on a Bridge City punt attempt in which the snap fell out of the punter’s hands. Pinder would later grab a 41-yard touchdown pass from Minaldi on a nice flea flicker. “I am so proud of the way this team fought through it all,†Stump said. “We have a good group of young players coming back. This will sure make the offseason feel a little bit easier, at least in our minds.†After the .500 campaign, Rhodes wants new goals for the Cardinals in 2009. “0-10 is over for us,†Rhodes said. “We are going to try for the playoffs next year. This year feels so good and now we just want to get over that hill. We battled after Hurricane Ike. We have a lot to be proud of.†Bridge City 43 Hamshire-Fannett 27 BC14 21 7 1 — 43 H-F 7 0 7 13 — 27 Scoring summary BC — Jerry Landry 61 pass from Luke Rhodes. Devin Bertrand kick. 3. Ozen downs LC-M, 34-21 Dan Perrine The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — Neither team had anything to play for except pride, so both schools gave outstanding efforts and produced a thrilling ball game. The Ozen Panthers rallied to defeat the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears 34-21 at Bear Stadium in the final game of the season. Momentum swings can be like a pendulum, and that is what swung the game in favor of the Panthers. Little Cypress-Mauriceville had the ball third-and-three at the Ozen 23 trailing by just 6 points, and then the exchange between the center and quarterback was fumbled and Ozen recovered. One play later LCM trailed by 13, as Ozen’s James White busted a run down the left side line for 77 yards and the score to seal the victory for the Panthers. Little Cypress-Mauriceville (0-8, 0-7) began the game filled with homecoming spirit or some kind of energy that had been missing in the first seven games. For the first time all season LCM took the lead on its first offensive series. Taking the ball at their own 18, the Bears marched the length of the field on 16 plays, using 7 minutes and 32 seconds on the clock. The drive featured 7 first downs, 3 rushing, 3 passing, and 1 very big first down on an Ozen penalty to set up first-and-goal at the Panther 10. On the next play after the penalty Hunter Gonzales kept the ball and carried a couple of Panthers into the end zone for the touchdown. Ryan Kimbrough made his first point-after of the season for a 7-0 Bear lead with 1:49 to play in the first quarter. Their next possession the LCM offense was moving again until a fumble turned the momentum around 180 degrees. Ozen recovered the fumble and returned it 53 yards to the Bears’ 7. Three plays later the score was tied on a pass from Terrell Durham to Anthony Lee. Ozen (3-6, 3-4) took the lead the next time it got the ball. James White rushed 4 times for 25 yards. Durham got the touchdown on a quarterback keeper from 3 yards. The Bears’ Bryant Dunmire blocked the kick to keep the score 13-7, which is how the first half concluded. The Bears took the kickoff to start the second half and drove down the field in 8 plays to take the lead. Gonzales made two spectacular plays to setup the score. First was a key first down completion to Preston Armstrong for 20 yards. On the next play Gonzales broke loose for 35 yards down to the Ozen 6. On fourth-and-goal from the one, Tevvin Jones bulled his way in over left guard for the tieing touchdown. Kimbrough was good with the kick to give LCM the advantage 14-13. Not to be outdone, the Panthers answered with an 8-play drive of their own. White and Durham combined for 6 carries to pickup 63 yards. Pierre Harmon got the touchdown on a 2-yard run. Jose Torres added the point-after to make the score 20-14 with just under 5 minutes to play in the third quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, Jones made a very good return of 35 yards to the Ozen 47. On first down Gonzales sped for 37 yards to a first-and-goal at the 10. Two runs by Gonzales and an incompletion setup fourth-and-goal from the 5. Gonzales stood tall in the pocket and then threaded the ball through a needle that a camel would have had an easier time passing through to Armstrong who hung on with three Panther defenders hanging onto him. The remarkable touchdown was followed by Kimbrough’s third straight successful kick to put the Bears back in the lead 21-20 with 2:46 to play in the third. For the fourth straight possession the offense got on the board. Ozen needed just four plays to score. White ran for 27 yards on two plays and Durham connected with Xzavian Jones for 22 yards down to the LCM 11. Durham passed to Nikilus Griffin from 10 yards for the touchdown to put the Panthers back on top after the PAT 27-21 with still 1:12 left on the third quarter clock. The Bears netted four more first downs and moved from their 12 to the Panther 23 before the momentum shifting lost fumble decided the game. Gonzales was outstanding in defeat for LCM rushing for 138 yards and passing for 142 yards. He is only a sophomore. 4. WO-S stampedes past OF, 67-0 Van Wade The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — Twenty-nine games and counting. That’s how the third-ranked West Orange-Stark Mustangs finished off their District 21-3A season. The Mustangs (8-0, 5-0) capped off their fifth straight district title since they dropped to Class 3A in 2004 and extended their district winning streak to 29 games by throttling Orange County rival Orangefield 67-0 in the regular season final on Homecoming night. How dominant were the Mustangs Friday night? The WO-S offense rolled up 615 total yards while the “Chain Gang†defense held the Bobcats to 45 yards and no first downs. “Our kids just had an amazing night,†said long-time Mustang head coach Dan Hooks. “We’ve played outstanding defense here a long, long time and that’s a credit to Coach (Cornel) Thompson. But we’ve never held a team to no first downs. That’s very, very hard to do.†In five 21-3A games, the Mustangs outscored their opponents 253-14. The Mustangs outgained the Bobcats 393-32 alone in the first half and held Orangefield (1-7, 0-5) to no first downs as WO-S led 39-0 at intermission. Mustang senior quarterback Ortavious Hypolite, who was crowned Homecoming King, completed 12-of-15 passes for 170 yards and a touchdown in the first half and rushed for 84 yards and a TD on eight first-half carries. He finished 14-of-18 for 212 yards. Senior tailback Quintavious Garrett found his way to the end zone four times in the first half and had 126 yards on 13 carries in the half. Garrett finished with 153 yards on 14 totes. Senior trey Franks led the way with four catches for 56 yards while junior James Haynes had for grabs for 45 yards and two TDs. “Our offense was rolling early,†said hooks. “Hypolite played so darn strong and Quinney (Garrett) ran better then he has in awhile. Everything was clicking. Coach (Randy) Crouch had everything rolling upstairs tonight and the kids executed well. We got a good look at some young kids late and they played well too.†The Mustangs will take on the Coldspring Trojans next Saturday at 6 p.m. at Deer Park High School in the Class 3A Region III Division II bidstrict round of the playoffs. The Mustangs buried the Trojans 51-14 in the same round last season. “We’re no strangers,†said Hooks. “The score wasn’t as bad as it really seemed last year. They had four turnovers that hurt them a bunch. They have a good club. Hopefully we can create some more turnovers again and let our offense go to work.†The Mustangs wasted no time getting on the board against the Bobcats, taking their first series and marching to the end zone in four plays and 60 yards. Hypolite completed two passes that went to Trey Franks for 32 yards. Garrett carried twice for 28 yards including a 9-yard touchdown blast with 11:03 remaining in the first period. Justin Sparrow’s extra-point was good, making it 7-0. After forcing Bobcat quarterback Jace Statum into a fumble at the Bobcat 34, it took the Mustangs just four plays to hit pay dirt again. Garrett carried twice for 18 yards and Hypolite capped it when he cruised through the middle of the Orangefield defense for a 17-yard keeper for a touchdown, upping the margin to 13-0 with 7:26 in the first. WO-S put together a five-play, 70-yard scoring march late in the first, 60 of it coming on the ground. Hypolite carried twice for 21 yards and Garrett finished it with a 28-yard TD gallop up the middle as the lead grew to 20-0 with 3:56 in the first. The Mustangs completed a beautifully executed nine-play, 65-yard scoring drive finishing it with 10:08 left in the first half. Hypolite carried three times for 35 yards on the march and Garrett capped it with a 5-yard run around the left end, giving the Mustangs a 26-0 edge. After defensive back Carderyl Dove picked off a pass at the Mustang 39, the Mustangs utilized a seven-play, 61-yard scoring drive. Hypolite completed two passes for 29 yards and Garrett had 23 yards on two totes, including a 7-yard TD blast as he had a great stretch to reach the end zone, making it 32-0 with 2:15 remaining in the half. The Mustangs went 65 yards in four plays to score again right before the half. Hypolite connected with receiver Josh Gloston on a 45-yard strike down the left sideline that went to the Bobcat 11. On the next play Hypolite found receiver James Haynes flashing across the middle of the end zone for a 11-yard scoring toss, making it 39-0 with 0:09 left in the half. WO-S made it 46-0 with 10:42 left in the third when Mustang Curtis Rose blocked a Bobcat punt and returned it 33 yards for a score. The Mustangs went 55 yards in two plays to up the advantage to 53-0 with 6:57 in the third. Garrett broke loose for a 27-yard scamper and Hypolite connected with Haynes for another score, this one a 28-yarder off a short pass that allowed Haynes to sprint to the end zone. WO-S executed a 12-play, 72-yard scoring drive that ate up 5:53 of the clock to make it 60-0. Backup tailback Kevin Robinson carried 10 times for 53 yards on the series and finished it with a 5-yard dive with 10:44 left. The Mustangs capped their scoring with a six-play, 68-yard march with fullback Stephen Cook finishing that one off with a 16-yard blast up the middle with 5:20 left. Chase Parker led the Bobcat attack with 20 yards on 17 carries while Zach Peevey had 17 yards on eight totes. Statum completed 1-of-7 passes for a negative 3 yards.
