Cougars looking for playoff polish By Nick Cioci The Baytown Sun Published November 7, 2008 The Crosby Cougars are 5-1 in District 19-4A and have already secured a playoff spot but are looking to secure second-place tonight when they host the C.E. King at 7 p.m “This is a fun time of the year for the kids,†Cougar coach Kevin Flanigan said. “They realize it’s not that they aren’t playing for anything, but rather they are playing for second place in district. Along with that, you want to keep that one-loss district record we have and maintain superiority over some other district opponents. “It’s just a pride thing for the kids to have that and do it.†Flanigan also said the kids realize what is on the horizon. “We still take the games week by week,†he said. “But they realize they aren’t just getting better for this game. It’s another week to prepare for the playoffs.†Flanigan said it’s good his team qualified for the playoffs early. “You never want to play the last ball game of the year needing to win to get in or count on someone else to lose or to have to win by so many points,†he said. “It lets us do some things in the last game now and lets us work on some things we couldn’t if we had to win to make the playoffs.†Flanigan said one of the things the Cougars are working on is consistency. “We still have a lot of young kids playing without (running back) Chance (Casey) being out there and moving around to different positions,†he said. “We play well at times and other times we give up big plays, so we are just working to maintain our consistency right now.†Flanigan said Casey played about a quarter in the Cougars’ 20-7 victory over Galena Park. “It’s been huge having the other kids step up around him (Casey),†he said. “It shows a lot that the kids realize they have to step up and have matured as a team. “They realize it’s not about one guy and understand that it’s a team deal.†Galena Park (3-5, 2-4) at Barbers Hill (2-6,2-4) The Eagles host Galena Park tonight at 7 p.m. Key players to watch for the Eagles are Tony Carmona, Caleb Stork and Jay Burditt. Carmona is 100 of 195 for 1422 yards and 12 touchdowns while also rushing 123 times for 424 yards and another 10 scores. Stork has 12 catches for 287 yards and two touchdowns while Burditt has 27 catches for 298 yards. Goose Creek Memorial (1-7, 1-5) at North Forest (5-3, 3-3) The Patriots travel to North Forest tonight at 7 p.m. looking to get their second win. The Patriots won their first-ever game Friday beating Kingwood Park 34-10. Key players to watch for on the Patriots are Cody Larson, DeMartie Allen and Patrick Wood. Larson is 80 of 175 passing for 902 yards and seven touchdowns to go along with 31 rushes for 197 yards and two more scores. Allen has 107 rushes for 732 yards and seven touchdowns while Wood has 38 catches for 403 yards and four touchdowns. Kingwood Park (1-7, 0-6) at Dayton (7-1, 6-0) Dayton host Kingwood Park tonight at 7 p.m. looking to keep their undefeated district record alive. The Broncos are led by A.J. Dugat, Cody Green and Payton Ploch. Green is 141 of 220 passing for 1855 yards and 20 touchdowns and has rushed for 723 yards and 17 more scores on 93 carries. Dugat has 34 rushes for 358 yards and four touchdowns while also having 66 catches for 1018 yards and 13 touchdowns. Ploch has 27 catches for 33 yards and six catches. Lumberton vs. Nederland Predictions?
KFDM COOP replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
LUMBERTON AT NEDERLAND KickOFF TIME The Port Arthur News LUMBERTON AT NEDERLAND * When: Friday, 7:30 p.m. * Where: Bulldog Stadium, Nederland * Records: Lumberton 8-1, 5-1; Nederland 4-3, 4-2 * Series: Nederland leads 8-2 * Last meeting: Lumberton, 33-7 * Raiders capsule: One magical season was not enough for third-year head coach Alvin Credeur. The 45-year-old former PN-G and Kelly assistant brings the finest 20-4A defense (210.5 yards a game) to Mid-County plus the league's turnover champs (plus 9) and owners of the best overall season (8-1). A win tonight retains at least a share of the 20-4A title for Lumberton which fashioned its all-time greatest campaign (11-2) last year.... Team leader Jacob Hanna ranks 2nd in 20-4A rushing and scoring with 900 yards and 78 points. The senior moves from end to middle linebacker due to the torn ligament sustained by junior Anthony Beard at PN-G.... Soph Ryan Hughes moved to 4th among 20-4A passers this week with 430 yards, but Lumberton has not placed a receiver among the league leaders... Raiders own two superb defensive tackles, Mark Murrill and Mason Archer to clog opposing ground games.... * Bulldogs capsule: Coach Larry Neumann celebrated a 13th playoff berth clincher at Vidor with a hard-earned 35-23 win but Neumann has experienced a blustery week due to suspensions of Asa Cardenas and Dionte Forney for missing practice without excused absences.... The Dogs will have to have Ryan Brady, Jude Vidrine, Brent Salenga and Jimmy Swain to take up the slack for those starters. Tommy Gillespie must occupy a huge role at end because Lumberton can tend to turn in that direction.... Senior Wareall Grogan leads a band of 20 seniors to make their final Bulldog Stadium appearances unless the Dogs host a playoff game.... Grogan is the 20-4A leader in rushing (1,091 yards) and scoring (84 points). He's accompanied by the 20-4A passing champ Kirby Bellow (1,393 aerial yards)... The 21st senior, Cardenas, leads 20-4A receivers with 33 receptions but likely loses that title to Ozen's Willie Jefferson (with 30) by not playing tonight. Neumann said Asa's status will be reviewed, along with Forney's, on Monday... * Credeur says: "This is an extremely important night because you start out wanting to be district champion, so this game is more important than the playoffs to us in that sense. We want to win tonight in order to attain that goal. Like all high school games, it usually comes down to turnovers and penalties... Nederland is a double-headed monster with the ball. Their running and throwing ability makes Nederland twice as difficult to defend. Those guys are an offensive juggernaut... The only question we have going into Nederland is (standout junior MLB/RB) Anthony Beard's condition. He tore his knee ligaments at PN-G but he may be able to play. He's been tremendous for us and if he were 100 percent, I wouldn't hold him out for sure. I'm not going to count on him right now as a starter but I may try to suit him out." * Neumann says: "It jumped out to me on video quite early in district that Lumberton's carryover from last year was quite evident... They're very disciplined and they're not going to beat themselves... They have strong, powerful people and good blockers. Their front four on defense is the best in the league, bar none.... We expect Beard to play. He's the best defensive player in the league. He's the best linebacker we've had around this area in awhile. I'm an Anthony Beard fan. He's a tackle-making machine.... Asa Cardenas and Dionte Forney are suspended from this game. I've been in this business for 35 years and the hurt never gets easier (as a coach).... We knew Vidor would play us very tough and we needed to play well in order to win." Titans, Ganders battle for playoffs GAME OF THE WEEK: BAYTOWN LEE AT MEMORIAL By Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News Forget the 2-5 season. Forget the 1-3 District 21-5A record. Forget the lost time caused by hurricanes, the injuries, the "what ifs," the inept offensive production in the blowout losses to North Shore and The Woodlands. All of the problems the Memorial Titans have had this season can be undone with tonight's homecoming matchup with the Baytown Lee Ganders. Whichever team wins tonight will move on to the Class 5A state playoffs despite a losing record, as the league is made up of just six teams and the top four qualify for the postseason. Both the Titans and Ganders are locked at 1-3 in district. Memorial head coach Ronnie Thompson said this is the "game of the year." "Everything is on the line and this game means as much to us as it does to them," Thompson said. "Both sides are all in and both teams have just as many chips involved. This is big." No doubt. And the Port Arthur News Friday Night Experience cameras will be there to capture all the action, with the game being replayed Tuesday at 7 p.m. on Cable 18. Just with the taste of victory last week, when the Titans used a 72-yard, two-minute drive to beat Channelview 23-22 to pick up a potential playoff saving victory, Thompson said the atmosphere around Port Arthur has completely changed. "This was a team that desperately needed a win. It was sorely needed. We have been fighting a lot of adversity this season and it's been hard getting everything to come together. "With that win and the way the win was conducted, I assure you the whole atmosphere around here has changed. We have self-respect and confidence now." While self-respect and confidence may go a long way for the Titans tonight, it's going to take a lot more to get a win over Lee and break into the playoffs for the first time since 2006. Both the Ganders and Titans faced a similar situation heading into the final week of the district season last year. Both teams needed a win to claim a spot. While Lee answered the call by routing Atascocita 44-7, Memorial basically did not show up against Humble. The Titans took one on the chin, losing 39-17. Every year has a twist, though. Well, with maybe one exception and that is that Memorial and Lee always go down to the wire. The series is currently tied at 3-3 and once has the victor won by more than a touchdown. However, in the six games between these two, Lee has only beaten Memorial once in Port Arthur. That result came back in 2002, which was the Titans' first year to play the Ganders. Comparing the numbers, the Ganders are averaging 227 yards of offense. Memorial is posting 244 yards per contest. Typically, Lee and Memorial bring huge offenses to the table with players such as Port Arthur's Jamaal Charles, who gets his first start for the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, and Lee's Drew Tate, who was one of the most prolific passers in Texas prep history. This year has been rather different, as both have struggled offensively while improving defensively. Offensively, only Port Arthur's Solomon Jones tops any major category in the district's skill positions. Jones leads 21-5A with 31 receptions. He also ranks third with 293 receiving yards and has been a jewel for the Titans kickoff and punt return teams. In the playoff deciding game against Humble last year, Jones gave Port Arthur one of its only sparks against the Mustangs by returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown. Jones has not scored a special teams touchdown this season but he did grab the decisive, 10-yard pass from quarterback Jereal Alexander last week against Channelview to win the game. Alexander ranks fifth in passing in 21-5A with 600 yards. He has thrown nine interceptions, however, in his four-and-a-half games this season. Alexander also has a team-high 249 rushing yards. Lee's biggest offensive threat is running back Steven Banuelos, who has 297 yards this season. He averages 4.1 yards a carry but has not found the endzone once. To put it mildly, this showdown does not appear to be the offensive matchup of the past. But, considering the importance of this go around and the battles these two have fought in the first six meetings, both Lee's head coach Dick Olin and Thompson agreed that anything will be possible, and both expect the score to be tight. "They (Lee) are a very good defensive team," Thompson said. "They have had their struggles on offense but this team has been in every game. They've only been blown out once and that was to North Shore (48-7 last week)." Memorial is allowing 272 yards compared to Lee's 242 yards per game. Lee ranks second in overall defense while Memorial is tied for fourth with Baytown Sterling. Even with Lee's respectful defense, Olin said he is rather concerned with Memorial's offense, especially Alexander, who led the Titans down the field for the game-winning drive last week against the Falcons. "He's a really good athlete," Olin said of Alexander. "He's kind of a Catch 22 because if you rush him, if you blitz him, he can break free and take it to the house. If you sit back, he has the ability to pick you apart." Maybe it's that Catch 22 that has Thompson feeling as if his team has some favorable matchups going into the contest. Thompson said he felt like they match up really well on both sides of the ball with the Ganders. He said they also have some different looks in store for Lee. "Stuff no one has seen yet," he said. Olin added that he fully expects both sides to understand the importance of the game. "This one means a lot," Olin said. "Both teams are in the same situation. Both teams are motivated. It should be a great game."

Buda Hays next for Rock-A-Noos By Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News Port Neches-Groves seniors Chelsea Horn and Alexis Smithy said before the start of this volleyball season that they wanted their team to come together, win a district title and make it deep into the playoffs. They suggested a Class 4A state championship would be a nice way of going out for head coach Barbara Comeaux and the rest of the Lady Indians. Well, so far the season has gone somewhat to plan. The Lady Tribe placed second in District 22-4A with a 12-2 mark, finishing one game behind Little Cypress-Mauriceville. The playoff goals started with a bang, however. PN-G fought hard to take a 1-1 split in Tuesday's Bi-District round of the playoffs against Kingwood Park. Then in the final two games, the Lady Indians rolled, claiming a 3-1 win to move onto the Region III, area round where they will meet Buda Hays High School tonight at 7 p.m. in the Coleman Coliseum across from Stratford High School on the west side of Houston. Buda Hays took home the District 17-4A title with a perfect 12-0 mark. Hays also claimed a 24-15 overall record this season, a record Buda improved Tuesday by topping Huntsville in the bidistrict round. Horn and Smithy both said earlier this season that it was time for the Rock-A-Noos to win a few playoff matches. After a clean district slate that accompanied a championship in 2007, the Lady Indians were bullied by Sante Fe in their first playoff game. Horn and Smithy went to work on Tuesday to get that monkey off thier collective backs. Along with other great efforts from senior leaders, Horn posted a team-high 20 kills and 24 digs. Meanwhile, Smithy had 19 digs and dropped in three aces, helping PN-G improve to 28-8 on the season. Smithy, Horn, Stephanie Bowman, Mallory Livingston, Hannah Lancaster, Carlie Clopton, Shelby Blanchard, Lauryn Stephens, Paige Blount, Paige Miller, Alexus Harper, Ashli Landry, Brandi Guidry, Shelby Hebert and Samantha Lunceford will hope to repeat Tuesday's success again tonight. Directions to the Stratford High School are as follows: Take I-10 West through Houston and toward San Antonio. Take the Dairy Ashford Road toward Westpark Drive for 3.5 miles heading south. Take a right on Fern Drive. The Coleman Coliseum is across from high school.

Thank god the season is over.I'am trying to be patient.I'am going to see what happens next year.We have some young kids but if they are not coached any better than what I saw this year. This will be the end of one of the best programs in the state. The defense was a disgrace.Whoever the def cord is he has to do better than that .We can not cover are tackle at all.FW had a QB and that was it .He looked like he was all world and there defense was almost as bad as ours. When was the last this someone scored 69 on LM.I have seen little league do better. Haven't missed the Playoffs since 89 right? -
