Pack the "Mac" for Lamar-Texas State Volleyball Mike Friedman BEAUMONT - As the Lamar University volleyball team hosts the Texas State Bobcats at 7 p.m. Friday, in a showdown between the top two teams in Southland Conference, fans are encouraged to "Pack the Mac" to set a new LU attendance record. Lamar will be looking to set a new attendance record when the Lady Cards and Bobcats meet. The current record for attendance was set on Oct. 10, when LU hosted UTSA on Pick Out McDonald Gym night for breast cancer awareness, as 617 fans filled the gym. A $150 prize will be given to the student organization that shows the most spirit and a competition at halftime will give several fans an opportunity to win prizes. The Lady Cardinals enter Friday's contest with an 11-9 overall record and a 9-2 record in SLC play after falling to UTSA last Saturday in San Antonio, Texas. Texas State comes into the match with an 18-12 overall record and an 11-1 mark in SLC play, riding an eight match win streak. Lamar is led by Shalayne Blythe's 2.23 kills and 0.76 blocks per set, while Genevieve Gladle who is averaging 2.19 kills and 2.86 digs per set. Lauren Holdorff is averaging 2.06 kills and a team-high 0.86 blocks per set while ranking first in the Southland Conference in hitting percentage in league play at .398. Ashley Todd has paced the LU attack with 9.38 assists per set and Andrea Hamilton leads the defense with 3.56 digs per set. Texas State is led by Jessica Weynand and Lawrencia Brown who are averaging 2.70 and 2.30 kills per set respectively, while Brittany Collins and Shelbi Irvin have split the setting duties with averages of 6.06 assists and 3.99 assists per set respectively. The Bobcat defense is led by Brown who is averaging 2.61 digs per set. After the showdown with Texas State the Lady Cards will host UT-Arlington on Saturday at 3 p.m. to close out the weekend.

Cardnals seek .500 marks against 'Horns Gabe Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — A lot of firsts will be on the line for the Bridge City Cardinals tonight at Larry B. Ward Stadium. A team which went 0-10 a year ago and was devastated by Hurricane Ike about eight weeks ago, now has a chance to be .500 on the season. A Bridge City victory over the Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns would also give the Cardinals back-to-back wins in District 21-3A for the first time since 2006 and would be the first win at home for the Cardinals since a 27-7 win over the Longhorns in 2006. The Cardinals (3-4, 1-3) lead the all-time series against the Longhorns (3-5, 1-3) 9-3. The first game between the two schools was in 1990, a 32-6 Longhorns’ victory. It will also be senior night for the Cardinals when the kickoff begins at 7:30 p.m. So with so much on the line for this Redbirds’ unit, one would think Coach Cris Stump and his Cardinals would be feeling some pressure in the last game of the season. “Really the best thing is when you don’t know when your last game is going to be,†Stump said. “We have approached this week as all the others yet still understand it will be the last game. We are going to try to play as if it was just another game but the kids are smart enough to know that is not the case. It would be a great accomplishment to get a victory. I was telling a coach on Monday it feels like four months ago since we played Huntington.†Bridge City defeated Huntington 28-16 in the Cardinals first game back after Hurricane Ike on Oct. 3. The Cardinals are coming off an emotional 14-7 win over their rival Orangefield Bobcats. Dustin Breaux scored with :06 left on the clock on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Josh Lemoine to seal the victory. Bridge City got 122 yards on 14 carries from freshman Matt Menard who now has 398 yards and one touchdown in five games. Junior quarterback Josh Lemoine threw for 168 yards and two touchdowns against Orangefield and also rushed for 68 yards. Lemoine has thrown for 980 yards in 2008 on 63-of-132 passing with eight touchdowns and five interceptions. Jerry Landry has hauled in 18 receptions for 364 yards and three touchdowns. Luke Rhodes has added 15 catches for 143 yards and Cory Moseley has 10 catches for 211 yards. Bridge City’s offense is averaging 279.7 yards and 16.2 points a game. The Cardinals defense is allowing 321.4 yards and 19 points a game in 2008. Stump knows the Cardinals will have to do a lot of things right to make sure Bridge City picks up the win in the last game of the year. “It is going to come down to who has the strongest will to win,†Stump said. “Hamshire-Fannett will not care about all the reasons we want to win. If you compare our common opponents we beat Liberty by twelve and their game was close to the same (34-20). We beat Orangefield with :06 left and they won against Orangefield in overtime. If you go by that, this will be an even game. It comes down to the will to win. We have to execute and not turn the ball over. We can’t give those guys cheap ones along the way.â€

Bobcats all set for trek to WO-S Gabe Pruett The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — If the West Orange-Stark Mustangs offense is slacking these days, Orangefield Coach Blake Morrison sure would like to find the missing pieces. Morrison has watched enough film on the Mustangs this week and knows exactly what the Bobcats are up against when Orangefield travels to Dan R. Hooks Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. game against the No. 3 Mustangs. The Mustangs hold a 4-0 record in the series which started in 2004 when WO-S fell to the 3A ranks. WO-S has outscored Orangefield 180-32 in the four games. “People who say they are not good on offense, I beg to differ,†Morrison said. “People who say that, goodness gracious.†The Mustangs have outscored their District 21-3A opponents 186-14. Silsbee and Bridge City are the only two teams to score against WO-S (7-0, 4-0) in the district race. So needless to say the Orangefield (1-6, 0-4) defense will have to be on their toes tonight. The Bobcats are giving up 305.3 yards and 22.8 points a game this year. WO-S is led by senior quarterback Ortavious Hypolite who has rushed for 458 yards and nine touchdowns and thrown for 898 yards and another nine scores. Quintavious Garrett has gained 595 yards on the ground with 10 touchdowns and Trey Franks is the leading receiver with 468 yards and four scores. One thing is for certain in Morrison’s mind, he will not have to worry about the effort his Bobcats will put out at Dan R. Hooks Stadium. “Our kids have been upbeat all week long,†Morrison said. “There are not many times you get a chance to go up against one of the top teams in the state. Our kids have played hard all season long. It has been a tough year as far as with breaks, injuries and calls. None of those things have really went our way. “This team has played 100-percent on every play. They keep playing and trying to accomplish our goals. You never have to worry about our effort on Friday nights.†The Bobcats sure gave their all a week ago even in a 14-7 loss to rival Bridge City. The Cardinals scored a late touchdown to win the game, which was tied 0-0 at the half. Orangefield received a powerful running attack from junior Chase Parker who carried the ball 27 times for 117 yards with a touchdown. Parker now has 349 yards on 76 carries with four touchdowns. Senior Zach Peevey is still leading the team with 364 yards on the ground with two scores while junior quarterback Jace Statum has 170 yards rushing. Statum has also thrown for 409 yards with a total of two touchdowns. The Bobcats offense is averaging 216.9 yards and 13.7 points a game. “We are just looking to finish what we started,†Morrison said. “I want this team to leave the field with no regrets. If they do that, I’ll stand right beside them and pat them on the back. That is all you can ask from anybody. We have to be on our A game because the team we are playing will find you if you are not. I have always told our team if you want to match up with this district, this is the team you have to match up against.â€

Vidor looks to finish strong against Lions Van Wade The Orange Leader VIDOR — Finishing with a flurry. That’s what the Vidor Pirates want to accomplish tonight when they hit the road to face the Livingston Lions. The Pirates (5-3, 3-3) fell out of the District 20-4A playoff picture last week with a gut-wrenching 35-23 loss at the hands of the Nederland Bulldogs (4-3, 4-2) but a still young Vidor squad can make a bold statement with a road upset over the Lions (6-2, 5-1). Livingston can win the 20-4A crown outright with a win over the Pirates and a Lumberton (8-1, 5-1) loss at Nederland. If Vidor downs Livingston and Nederland topples Lumberton and Beaumont Central (5-3, 4-2) tops Port Neches-Groves their could be a four-way tie for the title in Livingston, Lumberton, Central and Nederland. Livingston got a nice leg up last week when they went on the road to take down Central 29-19. For long-time Vidor head coach Jeff Mathews, he just wants the Pirates finish the season on a positive note. “Our kids have gotten after it so hard all season,†said Mathews. “We’re going to finish with a winning record for sure, but 6-3 sounds even better. We’re still a very young football team, one that wants to see a handful of awesome seniors finish on a winning note.†Mathews and the Pirates would love to put away a little frustration as well. “This is going to sound like a typical coach,†said Mathews. “We were one play away from beating Central. We were one play away from beating Ozen. Against Nederland we had a first-and-10 at their 16 with four minutes left and down just 28-23. It makes you sit back sometimes and wonder what could’ve been. But I don’t want to sit here and make excuses, we’re where we’re at. I think we’ve had a darn good season, one worthy of the playoffs. We can certainly build off the successes of this team and come back even stronger next season.†Vidor will check into their final game of the year averaging 348 yards a game while the defense, the second best in 20-4A, is allowing just 267.3. Fullback Theron Reynolds leads a rough-and-tumble running game with 708 yards and four touchdowns on 102 carries. Tailback Shane Pittman has dashed for 623 yards and three TDs on 68 carries while fellow back Jacob Peevey has muscled his way to 482 yards and five TDs on 68 totes. Quarterback Chris Teinert has 148 yards and nine TDs on the ground and has passed for 279 yards and two scores. The Lions, who average 291.4 yards a game and give up 293.9, certainly come in on a high after downing Central last week and Nederland 55-50 the week before. Vidor, more than any other team in 20-4A, knew more about Livingston, a newcomer to the district, due to playing them in non-district play the last two years. “I told everyone, all the other coaches in the district, that Livingston was going to be trouble for a lot of us,†said Mathews. “Livingston has some amazing athletes. They went three-deep in the playoffs last year and they start about 18 seniors, We knew they would be strong and they are.†Quarterback Dustin Harris makes the whole Lion operation go. He’s rushed for 406 yards and has passed for 376. The Lions also have a three-three-headed monster in the backfield as well in backs Quinton Jackson (72-526-4), Jordan Nixon (98-501-7) and Keaton Parker (38-385-4). “It’s going to be a tough battle for our kids,†Mathews said. “They’ll be up for the challenge. Last week was a tough loss for them but they have the mindset to go out and play hard. They’ve done it all season and we know they’ll do it again.â€

Family Ties By Dave Rogers Published November 6, 2008 Dick Olin likes to joke that he has a couple of kids he doesn’t claim as dependents on his income tax. Those would be the kids of longtime assistant coach Clint Riley and his wife Lisa, their son Austin and daughter Ashley. “One day, Clint doesn’t have any money for lunch, so guess who gives his kids money?†Olin said. “Now Ashley and Austin come to me for money all the time.†Good story, though technically Lee’s 17th-year head coach perhaps better qualifies as Austin and Ashley’s grandpa. After all, at least in a professional sense, Olin practically raised their dad, Clint, in the Lee fieldhouse. The elder Riley, who came to Lee in 1992 as a member of Olin’s first coaching staff and now serves as the Ganders’ offensive coordinator, was a 180-pound running back at tiny Blanco High School who grew into a 280-pound offensive lineman for UTEP. “Austin has started for us for three years at right tackle,†Olin says of the 6-2, 280-pound senior. “His dad claims, of course, that he was a better athlete (than Austin). But his dad’s from Blanco. Who checks? “And he (Clint Riley) graduated fifth or sixth in his class at Blanco. But he wasn’t in the top 10 percent of his class; the school’s so small.†Growing up around the Gander fieldhouse, Austin Riley has heard all of Olin’s jokes countless times. He’s taken advantage to get a head start on many of his peers knowledge-wise, and taken full advantage to prepare physically for varsity football. “His son is a much better athlete,†Olin lauds Austin. And how was it growing up with a dad who’s a coach? “Good,†Austin said. “There was nothing bad. He doesn’t treat me any different†than other players. “The head coach does, but that’s about it.†Clint Riley acknowledges the pitfalls of being his son’s coach. “You try not to have other people look at it like you’re playing favorites,†he said. “I treat him like he’s any other kid, but because he was playing as a sophomore, he heard some that he was only playing because he was my son. “I tried to distance myself, but the truth about it was, he was one of the best five kids.†Clint Riley acknowledges a current shortage of players that has forced many of the Ganders to play both offense and defense wasn’t a sudden result of the Baytown school district expanding from two high schools to three, but something the Lee coaches had been dealing with for several years. Austin Riley might not be a three-year starter today if the Ganders had numbers like their District 21-5A rival North Shore. “Austin was semi-forced into it as a sophomore, because of his size and stuff,†the player’s dad said. “He made sophomore mistakes, battled through that, and ended up being a good player for us.†Austin and his father have shared highs and lows with the Gander program. In 2006, Lee finished in a four-way tie for the 21-5A title, battled North Shore tooth and nail in a playoff game and lost on a missed overtime extra-point kick. A year ago, the Ganders had to win their final game just to make the playoffs, then were bounced, rather rudely, from the postseason by Pasadena Memorial. Again this year, Lee is going down to the wire fighting for a playoff berth. The Ganders travel to Port Arthur Friday night with the winner of the game against Memorial getting 21-5A’s final postseason bid. If the Ganders win Friday, there’s a good chance they’ll start the playoffs against La Porte, a team they beat 17-14 in their season opener. “It has been a weird season,†Austin said. “The hurricane threw everything off. I’ve been in the playoffs since my sophomore year. “Since it’s my senior year, I want to go all out. I want to get into playoffs and hopefully get to the second round and see what happens there.â€

Anahuac football eyeing District 23-2A title

Anahuac football eyeing District 23-2A title By Nick Cioci The Baytown Sun Published November 6, 2008 ANAHUAC—The Anahuac Panthers look to secure the District 23-2A football championship when they travel to Buna Friday night. “We want to be champs,†senior linebacker Blake Sanders said. “That gets us pumped up for the game.†The Panthers have already improved on last year’s 2-8 record by going 6-2 so far this year and qualifying for the playoffs. “It’s a big step up from last year,†senior defensive tackle Hunter Ullrich said. “It’s important, too, because it’s our senior year.†Sanders, who had 41 tackles in the Panthers’ eight games this year, feels its important for the Panthers to stay focused if they are going to beat Buna’s Cougars. “We just have to go harder in practice,†Sanders said. “Along with that, we have to make tackles during the game.†Ullrich, who has 21 tackles, agrees with his teammate. “We have to know where we are lining up,†he said. “We also need to know where we need to be and get there.†Panther coach Darrell Barbay said the Panthers can’t give up big plays to the Cougars. “We have to make them snap it and snap it and snap it,†he said. “Sooner or later, they will mess up and make a mistake. “On the other hand, on offense we just have to get the athletes the ball and not turn it over.†Sanders feels the Panthers are a better team this year because of who was moved up from JV this year. “We have a lot of seniors up here this year,†he said. “It helps us because we aren’t fighting on the field like we did last year.†Ullrich feels the Panthers’ improvement has come from their workouts. “There are more people doing the workouts this year,†he said. “In the past, we would only have about five guys showing up. Now it’s like the whole team.†Barbay agrees with his players that it would be great if they were district champs. “We have talked about if since off-season,†he said. “It’s why we lift and run track. The kids believe in what we are doing and it would be good for us.†Qualifying for the playoffs was a big step for the Panthers, Barbay said. “We have the talent,†he said. “We just had to get the kids believing in what we were doing.†-
