Cole, LSC-PA launch new era By Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News The Lamar State College-Port Arthur Seahawks are entering a basketball season of many firsts, starting with their first season under new head coach Jerre Cole, a 15-year coaching veteran who has served as both an assistant and head coach at many levels. This year, the Seahawks are also making the jump from NJCAA Division III to NJCAA Division I. LSC-PA has joined the Region XIV Conference, which by objective opinions may be the best league in NJCAA with schools such as Angelina, San Jacinto, Blinn, Southern University and Panola College. With the jump to Division I, the Seahawks are also allowed to give out scholarships for the first time in school history. Cole used them to bring in freshman point guard Josh Wasington of Baton Rouge and 6-8 sophomore forward Tim Hamlin of Boston. Washington and Hamlin are the only two Seahawks who are not from the Houston/Southeast Texas area. From Houston are freshmen D'Jameon Stearns and Joseph Franklin and Adrian Fontenot is out of Baytown Sterling High School. The rest of Cole's roster is made up of local talent, including Jamel Douriso of Port Neches-Groves, Jason Williamson and George Williamson of Vidor, Adam Sanchez of Bridge City, Dallas Bean of Mauriceville, Jacoby Joseph and Stephen Moten of Ozen High School, Jacovin Buckner of Memorial High School and Lincoln Charleston of Central High School. Cole said Buckner and Charleston will be redshirted this season. The first year mentor, whose coaching background includes stops California, Kansas, Arizona and Missouri, said he his team can be competitive this year, despite the odds stacked against his Seahawks. LSC-PA is picked to finish last in the conference. Even so, 12 of the 14 teams in the conference qualify for the postseason. Cole's goals are to crack the top 12. He feels that is doable. LSC-PA finished 2007-08 in at 13-15 overall and 6-6 in the Metro Athletic Conference. That 6-6 record was good enough to have the Seahawks finish fourth in the league in just their second year as a program. Returning from that team are both the Williamson brothers and Douriso. Cole said those three guys have really been great to have around for both athletic and leadership reasons. "They have really tried to lead this team by example, even though they are as unfamiliar with my system as any of the other players,†Cole said. “But those are the guys who are coming back and it is their team so to speak. I've enjoyed having them here. We have a great bunch of guys here, hard working and talented. I really like what we have," Cole said. He added that in all his stops as a coach this is the first time he finds himself in an area with an abundance of local talent. "That will make my job so much easier. Not having to travel all over the country to find players, will give me more time to work on other parts of this program," Cole said. The only setback so far to this first year was the loss of September due to hurricane evacuations. His team lost a lot of conditioning in that span. He also said that the lost time may have affected some of his team's rebounding in their preseason matchups. He said in two preseason games, the Seahawks have been outrebounded considerably. Cole went on to say he feels as if most of the rebounding problems have come from some of the players not being completely familiar with his offensive and defensive styles. "Most of these guys are still trying to adjust. Offensively, we play a style of offense that puts us in some bad positions to get rebounds. All that means is that we are just going to have to work harder with boxing out. We haven't been boxing out like we need to." As optimisitic as Cole is about the future of the basketball program, he said he hopes the community will be supportive and patient. He added that former LSC-PA coach Don Bryson did a tremendous job getting the program to where it was before Cole was hired. "I know there are going to be some growing pains and we have a long way to go but I don't think it is unreasonable for us to be competitve this year,†he said. “We have a lot of tough competition early, games that we should get a lot of work in and games that should help us grow confidence," Cole said. “This is a tough conference but if we stay focused and continue to get better, there are going to be some teams that press at the end of the season and maybe we can do enough to make the playoffs this year." The Seahawks start the season Monday in Shreveport, where they will take on Southern University at 6 p.m. LSC-PA's first home game will also be against Southern University. That matchup will be on Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. The Seahawks first conference game will be Nov. 25 at Lon Morris College in Jacksonville at 7 p.m. Schedule: Nov. 3 — at Southern University, 6 p.m. Nov. 6 — at Lone Star College, 7 p.m. Nov. 11 — Southern University, 7 p.m. Nov. 14 — at Lone Star College, 7 p.m. Nov. 15 — at Cedar Valley College, 3 p.m. Nov. 18 — Lone Star College, 7 p.m. Nov. 22 — at Lon Morris College, 7 p.m.

Patriots top Panthers for first win By Dave Rogers Published November 2, 2008 HUMBLE – When Joseph St. Julian saw the ball bounding his way Saturday afternoon, he said he had only one thing in mind. “I was thinking about running it back,†he said. And the Goose Creek Memorial junior did just that, busting through a scrum of would be tacklers and running 68 yards for a touchdown. Just as he and his Patriot teammates broke through to earn the first varsity football win in the program’s eight-game history, 34-10 over Kingwood Park. “Super Bowl, man,†Memorial coach Bret Boyd said, as he firmly grasped the game ball on the Turner Stadium turf, moments after his receiving the obligatory ice water-dunking by his players. “We knew we had a chance (to win), but we knew they were sitting over there saying the same thing. Luckily, we showed up with the frame of mind we’re going to get after it and we did.†Both Memorial and Kingwood Park are playing their first varsity football seasons without benefit of any seniors. The Panthers, it was pointed out by a fan, had 11 starters out injured. But the Panthers also played together on a junior varsity team last year, a luxury not available to Memorial, which only opened its doors in August. Kingwood Park had also won a game earlier this season against a poor Houston Sterling team. The win left Memorial 1-7 for the season, 1-5 in District 19-4A. The Panthers are 1-7, 0-6. St. Julian’s runback broke open the game after Memorial held a slight 14-10 halftime lead. But, early, a 95-yard scoring run by halfback DeMartie Allen had kept the Patriots from maybe getting steamrolled. That and the kind of break they’ve seen far too little of this year. Panther running back Adrian Quintero romped for 72 yards on Kingwood Park’s opening drive, including an 18-yard TD run. He and the Panthers were en route to making it 14-0 when Quintero fumbled and Patriot Keithen Collins recovered at the 1-yard line. After Memorial quarterback Cody Larson ran for four yards on first down, he tossed an option pitchout to Allen, who went to the barn, tying the game 7-7 in the process. “I had to shake a couple of people,†he said, “and I got a good block from No. 18 (Brandon Rhoden). “We needed to win this game. I was thinking TD.†Allen wound up his day with 189 yards on nine carries and two touchdowns. The second was a three-yarder, one of three Patriot scores in the third period. Larson completed 7 of 9 passes for 94 yards – all to Patrick Wood – and rushed for 44 yards. His 17-yard TD pass to Wood with 1:44 left in the half gave the Pats their 14-10 halftime lead. His six-yard TD run with 53 seconds left in the third period completed the game’s scoring. Quintero had 166 yards by halftime and finished with 207 yards on 31 carries. Kingwood Park’s other score came on a 41-yard second-chance second-quarter field goal by Kyle Trimm. He had missed from 46 yards, but an offsides penalty against the Patriots moved him five yards closer. Led by Allen, Memorial finished with 301 rushing yards. Wood actually had nine catches for 90 yards after backup QB Price Jacobs finished 2 for 2 for minus-4 passing.

Rangers lose, win long-awaited playoff berth By Nick Cioci The Baytown Sun Published November 2, 2008 BEAUMONT—The Sterling Ranger football team might not have been able to gain a win on the football field against the West Brook Bruins Saturday. West Brook won 41-23. But the Rangers did gain a win the night before, qualifying for the Class 5A football playoffs for the first time since 1985 by virtue of Port Arthur’s win over Channelview. “It means everything,†wide receiver Chance Nelson said. “It’s something we haven’t done in 23 years.†Nelson had eight catches for 112 yards in Saturday’s game for the Rangers. Senior quarterback Keagan Kogut, who was 21 of 43 passing for 298 yards, agreed. “It means a lot. It was our vision for the year,†he said. “But after a loss like this, you can’t be excited about it.†Ranger head coach Herb Minyard said making the playoffs is a credit to what his players did the first part of district. “It’s a testament to their perseverance and to what we asked out of them all the way back in August,†Minyard said. “To be able to achieve that is great for the kids, the program, the school and the whole community.†Saturday, the Bruins jumped out to an early 7-0 lead when Donte Lopez returned Kogut’s first punt of the game for a 46-yard touchdown. The Rangers came back from that touchdown, though, and took a 12-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. The two Ranger touchdowns came from the hands of Kogut, one a three-yard run and the other a 12-yard pass to Nelson. After that score, though, the Bruins answered with two scores of their own, both coming from running back Christine Michael. The first one was a 25-yard run to make it 14-12 West Brook at the half. The next came in the third quarter on a one-yard run to make it 20-12. The Rangers added three more points on an Israel Rodriguez 22-yard field goal to make it 20-15 after three quarters. Once again, though, the Bruins were unfazed. They added two more scores to extend their lead to 34-15 midway through the fourth quarter. Michael another one-yard run, his third touchdown of the game, and Bruin quarterback Christian Louis hit Ryan Grant on a 15-yard pass for the two scores. The Rangers wouldn’t quit fighting. They made the score 34-21 when Kogut hit Nelson for a 38-yard hookup and their second touchdown connection of the day. The Rangers went for two and converted with Kogut passing to Andre Corley. “I feel we didn’t play well,†Minyard said. “But we never gave up and kept on fighting.†The Bruins added another score late in the fourth quarter when Louis hit Grant for a 14-yard touchdown, his second of the game. The Rangers wrap up the regular season Friday, hosting winless Channelview. West Brook goes on the road to play North Shore for the 21-5A title. -
