  3. Lady Ganders pull off comeback; make playoffs From sports staff reports Baytown Sun Published November 1, 2008 The Lee Lady Ganders volleyball team kept their season alive on Friday with a win over Beaumont West Brook. The Lady Ganders came from two sets behind to win the fourth-place District 21-5A tiebreaker in five sets, 16-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-8,15-10. The two teams finished district play tied at 3-7, forcing Friday’s match at Lee High School to see which would qualify for the last playoff spot. Ahead 2-0 in sets and looking to put the match away, the Bruins jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the third set, getting four points off Lauren Chavez’s serve, one an ace. After the Lady Bruins made it 13-10, the Lady Ganders battled back and got nine points in a row off Jenny Epperson’s serve to take a 21-14 lead. Lee and West Brook then traded points until it was 24-17, Lee. The Bruins then got five points in a row off Jasmine Bass’ serve to make it 24-23. But the Lady Ganders thwarted the Bruins’ comeback effort to win the set 25-23. “I definitely feel that set was the turning point,†Lee coach Alicia Nava said. “Their mental focus and motivation helped them to pull it together at the very end.†In the fourth set, the Lady Ganders used the momentum they had gained from the third set and scored 10 points in a row off Mary Grosjean’s serve to run away with a 25-8 win. In the fifth set, the Lady Ganders kept that momentum in their favor. The Lady Ganders started the set by forcing a Bruin side-out and then got four points off Epperson’s serve to jump out to a 5-0 lead. The Bruins wouldn’t go away easily. though. They picked up three straight points on Bailey Goins’ serve to make it 5-4. The Lady Ganders wouldn’t let the Lady Bruins get any closer then two after that though en route to their 15-10 fifth set. Deanna Hildebrand, Catherine Anderson, Jackie Perez and Taylor Perez led the way for the Lady Ganders. Hildebrand had 17 kills, Anderson had 11 kills, Jackie Perez had 12 kills and Taylor Perez had nine kills. Early on, the Lady Bruins battled back and forth with the Lady Ganders in the first set before finally breaking away for the 25-16 win. In the second set, the Lady Ganders had a 21-19 lead before the Bruins rallied to score the final six points. The six points came off Chavez’s serve with three of those being kills by Kendelyn Wheaton to take the second set 25-21. Lady Coogs score tie-breaker sweep DAYTON – With both teams already owning a piece of the District 19-4A crown, Friday’s volleyball match between Barbers Hill and Crosby wasn’t really a tie-breaker. Here’s hoping it wasn’t a knee-breaker. Crosby won the league’s top playoff seeding in a three-game, 25-23, 25-20, 25-17, sweep of the Eagles, who lost setter Megan Burnett to a leg injury late in the first game. Only a week ago, Burnett and Barbers Hill won a five-game decision over Crosby to even their regular-season series. “In my opinion, Megan is the best setter in our area and you don’t lose a setter like that and not drop a little bit,†Crosby coach Michael Williams said. “It really seemed to knock them off their rhythm.†The result of Friday’s match is that Crosby will play Nederland, the fourth-place finisher in District 20-4A, in bi-district at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lee College. Barbers Hill, will play third-place 20-4A finisher Beaumont Ozen at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lamar University’s McDonald Gym in Beaumont. Barbers Hill coach John Leonard said he wouldn’t know until today the severity of Burnett’s injury. Ironically, she suffered a knee injury last year against Crosby. “They were just better than we were tonight,†Leonard said. “I guess it mattered (Burnett’s injury), but I don’t know that was the difference. “They served us out of the gym and that was the difference.†Crosby chalked up sevice aces against the Eagles, with Jessie Travis leading the way with three. Lacy Bates, Meagan Veach and Megan Travis all served two aces. Bates led the attackers with 14 kill for Crosby, with Megan Travis getting 23 assists and Jessie Travis getting 15. Veach had 20 digs. Dyana Canon led Barbers Hill with eight kills and Kirsten Terry added seven.
  4. Cougars handle Yellowjackets Carl Theiss Correspondent Published November 1, 2008 HOUSTON — Crosby traveled to Galena Park ISD Stadium on Friday ready to gain their fourth straight state playoff berth. With the defense playing lights out from start to finish, the Cougars punched their postseason ticket with a 20-7 victory over Galena Park in 19-4A action. Both teams struggled in the opening period to get their offense going. Each team lost a fumble and punted twice before Crosby’s offense came to life. On their first drive of the second quarter, quarterback Dominic Merka and running back Chance Casey moved the Coogs 66 yards in 12 plays, before Casey cashed in on a six yard dive play. Casey, who continued to nurse his groin injury, led all rushers with 83 yards on 12 first-half carries, before turning most of the rushing over to sophomore Forrest Tyler. Forrest ended the game with 61 yards on 19 carries. On the ensuing kick after the Casey touchdown, the Cougar’s set up the next score when Torre Manuel pounced on a Jacket fumble on Galena Park 32-yard line. Xavier Frank, on the first play of the possession, took a reverse 21 yards to the Jacket 11. A few short runs and a procedure penalty stalled the drive, but freshman Sam Fowler pushed the margin to 10-0 with a 25 field goal with 5:47 left in the half. The Galena Park offense continued to struggle in the second quarter, as the Coogs limited the Jackets to only eight yards of offense and no first downs. In the first half, Galena Park managed only 79 yards total offense. In the third quarter, Fowler hit a second field goal from 31 yards after a Chris Corman fumble recovery. Crosby put the game away when Frank hauled in a 29-yard Merka touchdown toss, giving them a 20-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets avoided the shutout by scoring on their last possession when QB Josh Guzman hit Cregory Evans for a 2-yard touchdown with 1:40 remaining. On the Galena Park scoring drive, the Jackets had 70 of their 155 total yards.< Guzman, who was under constant pressure, passed for 104 yards and rushed for 48 yards. Crosby who claimed a Class 4A Division II berth are now 5-3 and 5-1 in 19-4A play. The Coogs close out the regular season next week at C.E. King in a battle for second place in district. Galena Park, now 3-5 and 2-4, travels to Barbers Hill to battle the Eagles.
  5. Panthers steamroll Warriors Robert Chambliss Correspondent Published November 1, 2008 ANAHUAC – The Anahuac Panthers dominated the Warren Warriors 53-0 Friday night. Anahuac showed its strength early with an interception by freshman Justin Albritton and a 10-yard touchdown run by senior Deior McNeil three minutes into the game. Over the last eight minutes of the first quarter, Albritton had two more interceptions, one he returned for a touchdown, and McNeil ran for two more. At halftime, McNeil had four touchdowns and 176 yards rushing, Braxton Mayes had two receptions for 57 yards, one rushing touchdown, and a two-point conversion, and senior quarterback Jacob Pesina had 58 yards passing with one touchdown. In the third quarter, Anahuac scored one final time on a 10-play, 49-yard drive, with a three-yard touchdown run by Omar Teran. The Panthers, 6-2 for the season, ended up with 413 total yards, including 345 rushing yards accumulated by nine different runners. On the defensive side, the Panthers only 83 total yards, held the Warriors scoreless and caused five turnovers. “We played really well tonight,†Panthers head coach Darrell Barbay said after the game. “We protected the ball real well, and made very key turnovers … especially at the beginning of the game. “We did good on both sides really. Defense gave up no points, that’s always good, and the offense scored a heck of a lot. We also came out of the game with no injuries, which is always a good thing, especially with Buna next week.†Buna and Anahuac are tied for the lead in District 23-2A at 4-0 and their game next week in Buna is likely for the title. “Next week we play for the district championship, and I think that this win really geared us up for that game,†Barbay said.

  9. Raiders grind past Bears, 34-6 Aaron Burke The Orange Leader LUMBERTON — The Lumberton Raiders used a bruising running game and a 20-point outburst in the second quarter to run past the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears 34-6 in District 20-4A play at Raider Stadium Friday night. Raider tailback Jacob Hanna paced the Lumberton ground game with 97 yards on eight carries and he scored three touchdowns. The Raiders (7-1, 5-1) clicnhed at least a share of the 20-4A title with the win. LC-M slips to 0-7 overall, 0-6 in 20-4A action. The Raiders piled up 352 total yards, 320 of it coming on the ground. LC-M sophomore quarterback Hunter Gonzales had his best night of the season, completing 16-of-33 passes for 213 yards. Bear receiver Daniel Harrison hauled in five receptions for 92 yards while fellow receiver Samuel Burton had seven grabs for 69 yards. The Raiders got on the board first when quarterback Ryan Hughes scored on a 5-yard gallop early in the first period. The Bears then put together a solid 17-play scoring march and tailback Tevvin Jones capped it with a 1-yard plunge to make it 7-6 still in the first period. The Raiders caught fire in the second period. Hughes, who had 72 yards on 13 carries, scored on a 1-yard keeper. Hanna then made the Bears pay with a 28-yard touchdown sprint and he capped the first half when he scored on a 2-yard dive. Hanna scored the second half’s only points when he took it into the end zone on a 3-yard dart. The Bears finished with a season-high 251 yards in the loss. Lumberton running back Ryan Asher added 97 yards on 17 totes. Four turnovers hurt the LC-M cause while the Raiders coughed up the ball twice. The Battlin’ Bears will close out their season next week at home for Homecoming against Beaumont Ozen. 10. Last second heroics Cards TD with :06 left lifts BC past OF, 14-7 Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — Time was a valuable commodity late Friday night at F.L. McClain Stadium. The Bridge City Cardinals had just enough and the Orangefield Bobcats ran out of seconds. The Cardinals scored on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Josh Lemoine to Dustin Breaux as Bridge City defeated rival Orangefield, 14-7. “I saw the line and there was no way I could go down,†Breaux said. “I will sleep a lot better tonight than I did last year.†Breaux, now a senior, was thinking back to last year’s 60-35 victory by the Bobcats over the Cardinals (3-4, 1-3). “It is a wonderful feeling,†Breaux added. “It is really about time we get a big victory. I have enjoyed going from 0-10 to now being here.†The Cardinals are now 11-6 all-time against the Bobcats who 1-6 on the season and 0-4 in District 21-3A play. Halloween night was the lowest scoring game between Bridge City and Orangefield since a 2-0 Cardinals’ win in 1961. “At halftime when it was 0-0, I told the kids they needed to believe we could come out and find a way to win,†Bridge City Coach Cris Stump said. “I told Josh on that last play if nothing was open to throw it away and we could kick the field goal to win. He found Dustin on about the 2 and Breaux did a great job to find the end zone.†Lemoine finished with 168 yards on 13-of-22 passing with one interception and two touchdowns. The junior signal caller also ran for 68 yards on 14 carries. Lemoine now has 980 yards passing on the season with seven touchdowns and five interceptions. “This is a big relief,†Lemoine said. “It was like every other game we have been in all year, it was a dog fight. There was a lot more talking on the field though tonight.†The Cardinals were again led by the elusive freshman running back Matt Menard. Menard finished with 122 yards on 14 carries and now has 398 yards on the ground in 2008. After a scoreless first half, the Cardinals took their first drive of the second half deep into Bobcats’ territory. Bridge City faced a 4th-and-2 from the Orangefield 3-yard line but Lemoine was stopped short and the Cardinals were forced to punt. After an Orangefield punt, the Cardinals put the game’s first points on the board. After a 9-yard pass to Jerry Landry, Lemoine decided to look deep. Landry was once again the recipient and this time it was for a 30-yard touchdown strike. A Devin Bertrand kick made it 7-0 Cardinals with 1:49 left in the third. The Bobcats wasted no time in answering the Cardinals call. Orangefield started at the Cardinals’ 27-yard line after Garrett Holmes ran the kick back 49 yards. it took eight plays for the Bobcats to score yet Chase Parker found the end zone from 1 yard out. Parker finished the night with 27 carries for 117 yards. A Derrick Evans kick made it 7-7 with 10:34 left in the contest. Parker now has 349 yards on the season with four touchdowns. Bridge City went on the winning drive with 1:32 showing on the clock. Lemoine first found Luke Rhodes for 29 yards and then Cameron Dishon for 11 yards. Two plays later it was Menard who hauled in an 18-yard pass bringing the Cardinals down to the Bobcats’ 18-yard line. After an incompletion, Lemoine ran the ball himself for nine yards to set up the game-winning strike with Breaux. The dramatics were not quite over as Orangefield quarterback Jace Statum found Wesley Wiggens for 22 yards. A Bridge City face mask gave the Bobcats one last shot from the Cardinals 32. The last pass fell incomplete and gives the Cardinals new hope of finishing the season .500. “To get to .500 would be very emotional for this team,†Stump said. “It would be something these kids and community could be very proud of. They have been through so much and have not blinked an eye. It is a credit to them, our coaches and the families. I am very proud of them.†The Cardinals will play host to the Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns while Orangefield travels to face the West Orange-Stark Mustangs. 11. Nederland, Livingston wins doom Vidor playoff hopes Dan Perrine The Orange Leader VIDOR — The number one defense in district played the number one offense in district with a playoff spot on the line. The Nederland Bulldogs pulled out a tense victory 35-23 over the Vidor Pirates at Ivan Croak Field in Pirate Stadium Friday night. Nederland (4-4, 4-2) displayed their district leading offense, but it was their defense that was the difference and secured the win for the Bulldogs. Twice Nederland stopped the Pirates in the fourth quarter deep in Bulldog territory to preserve a precarious 5-point lead. Vidor (5-3, 3-3) executed an onside kick that bounced off the hands of three or four players for both sides before the Pirates recovered at their 47. Five running plays moved the ball to the Nederland 32 as the Pirates faced a fourth-and-one. The Bulldogs’ Jordan Landry penetrated and stopped the Pirate runner for no gain. The Pirates got the ball back following a punt and began to move down the field again. Chris Teinert connected with Shane Pittman out of the backfield for 16 yards into Nederland’s end of the field. Five more running plays moved the ball to the Bulldog 20. Teinert then tried to crossup the Nederland defense with play action, but Jimmy Swain picked off the pass at the goal line to thwart the Pirates’ chances to take the lead. On the very next play Nederland plunged a dagger into the Pirates’ heart and their chances for a come back died when the Bulldogs’ Wareall Grogan broke a couple of tackles and raced down the Nederland sideline for an 84-yard touchdown. The extra point gave Nederland a 35-23 lead with just 3:52 to play in the game. The second half looked like neither defense was on the field as both teams scored their first two possessions after halftime. The on the field fireworks followed the traditional pyrotechnical festivities of the Vidor homecoming. The Bulldogs opened the second half scoring with Kirby Bellow and Asa Cardenas teaming up for the score on a 23-yard pass. Cardenas finished the night with 6 receptions for 112 yards, and the touchdown gave Nederland a 21-10 lead. Five running plays were again the formula for Vidor on their drive. Jacob Peevey got the ball rolling with a 43-yard burst. Peevey got the touchdown on a 10-yard run with most of the Vidor offensive line leading the way. Travis Greenway kicked the point-after to narrow the gap to 21-17. The tandem of Bellow and Cardenas did their routine again on the next Bulldog possession. The first completion between the dynamic duo was good for 13-yards and a first down. Grogan caught a screen from Bellow which would have been a touchdown except for a holding penalty at the 4. Two plays later Bellow found Cardenas in the end zone for the touchdown and the Bulldog lead was back to 11 points. The lead was reduced again as the Pirates ran off a 13-play drive that ate 6 minutes on the clock. The first 12 plays were on the ground. Devan Dart had the biggest gain of 26 yards on his first carry of the game. The only pass came on play action as Teinert found James Laramore wide open in the back of the end zone for the six points. Vidor tried for two, but Teinert was pressured and his scramble was stopped well short leaving the score 28-23 with 11:13 to play in the game and setting the stage for the dramatic finish. The teams entered the game tied in the district race for the fourth and final playoff position, and through two quarters only 4 points separated the Pirates and Bulldogs. Nederland took the early lead, but Vidor clawed back with 10 unanswered points before halftime. The Bulldogs scored the first time they had the ball. Their balanced offensive attack saw Grogan rush 4 times for 19 yards. Bellow completed two passes for first downs to Cardenas good for 48 yards. Grant Lovelady got the touchdown on a 2-yard run, just crossing the goal line. Taylor Trahan’s kick made the score 7-0 with 5:55 to play in the first quarter. After Vidor’s Teinert recovered a Bulldog fumble at the Pirates’ 49, Vidor turned the ball over to Pittman. The Pirate running back carried the ball five straight times for 28 yards moving the ball to the Nederland 11. On the next play the Pirates tried an option play, but an errant pitch resulted in the Bulldogs recovering at the 17. Grogan ran the ball three times for a first down at the 31. He broke the 1,000 yard mark for the season with 183 yards in the game. Bellow fired a strike down the middle to Ryan Brady, who avoided a couple of Pirates at midfield and then sprinted between the hash marks to complete a 69-yard touchdown. Trahan made the score 14-0 with just a minute and a half gone in the second quarter. Vidor responded immediately, working a 9-play, 56-yard drive to get on the board. The Pirates benefitted from a dead ball penalty assessed on the kickoff against Nederland for a personal foul on the previous touchdown. Teinert threw to Theron Reynolds for an 18-yard gain and a first down to start the march. The remainder of the drive was on the ground. Reynolds carried five times for 12 yards, and Peevey ran three times for 18 yards including the touchdown from 4 yards out. Greenway added the point-after to cut the Bulldogs lead in half. The top ranked Pirate defense needed to hold the Bulldogs and got a critical stop on Grogan on third-and-two to force a punt. Taking over at their 43, the Pirates drove down the field to get 27-yard field goal from Greenway with just 2 seconds left in the half to make the score 14-10. The last game of the regular season will find Vidor at Livingston and Nederland at home against Lumberton.
