PN-GROVES AT BEAUMONT OZEN KICKOFF TIME The Port Arthur News • When: Friday, 7:30 p.m. • Where: Durley Stadium, Beaumont • Records: PN-G 3-4, 1-4; Beaumont Ozen 1-6, 1-4 • Series: PN-Groves leads 6-1 • Last year: PN-G, 21-19 • Radio: KCOL-FM (92.5) • Indians capsule: How agonizingly close coach Matt Burnett's Tribe came to staying in the 20-4A race in its overtime loss to Lumberton last week. PN-G got up 10-0 but never could put up enough stop signs to get its defense off the field. Indians only had the ball 12:52... PN-G managed a season-low nine first downs, including a Harrison Tatum scoring pass to Spencer DeRon, and a 48-yard rushing night from fullback Caleb Harmon.... New defenders to sparkle and shine included junior Dre Dunbar at right corner, and the tandem of Ryan McLin and Dillon Harrison at right end. They filled the vacancy of RE Aaron Shetley (knee). The fellow senior end, Jerin Spikes, has been a defensive leader all year for coordinator Carl Broussard's platoon. Tribe coaches also have praised the work of improving senior corner Tyler Gizzi on Spikes' side. • Panthers capsule: Central limited coach Ishan Rison's Panthers to a season-low five first downs and 37 rushing yards in the 36-7 Jaguars victory last Friday. Although the offense is 7th among the eight league teams at 239.3 yards a game, receiver Willie Jefferson is tied for the 20-4A lead in most receptions with 27... Teammate Anthony Lee is right behind Jefferson with 22 catches... Senior QB Marquis Moore stands 3rd in 20-4A passing numbers with 690 yards... Two Division I pledges have anchored the defense -- middle linebacker Justin Isadore (TCU), and strong safety Breon Johnson (UTEP) but an injury sidelines Johnson from playing tonight... LU pledge John Prescott has been a strong anchor on both lines.... • Burnett says: "Ozen is very athletic and they play pretty good but they haven't had any breaks at all. They impress you with their speed on both sides of the ball. And they're more athletic than I thought they would be after looking at them on video... We played extremely hard and gave a great effort against Lumberton. We didn't score enough points and it was a heart-breaking loss because it was one of our better games all season, especially on defense....We're happy about (Ryan) McLin joining (Harrison) Tatum as commitments to Lamar and we really thought McLin did a great job on defense for the first time (in place of injured RE Aaron Shetley).†• Rison says: "We're both in the same boat. We both have pretty decent teams and we have no idea why our records are the way we are. It's been turnovers and plays which could have worked out the other way for both teams. That's just how it goes sometimes. We have watched the Indians and they look impressive on video.... We know exactly how they feel because a play or two in this game and that game has gone the other way. We probably would have been able to win those games. And coach Burnett's team has had a season that's gone the same way.... We both had a play or two against Lumberton that went the other way. We had that same sort of opportunity deep into our Central game but we also need to have a more established program to put us in a better position to be successful in the future.†PN-G OFFENSE SE -- Kyler Segura (45) LT -- Ryan McLin (51) LG -- Lindon Hightower (72) C -- Tanner Ross (55) RG -- Dillon Harrison (67) RT -- Stephen Savant (75) TE -- Jerin Spikes (80) QB -- Harrison Tatum (8) FB -- Caleb Harmon (7) TB -- Josh Wright (9) FL -- Spencer DeRon (19) OZEN DEFENSE LE -- John Prescott (70) LT -- Tim Stewart (51) RT -- Terrell Raville (28) RE -- Jared Lee (44) SLB -- Ricky Francis (25)

Critical bout for Vidor, Dogs By Tom Halliburton The Port Arthur News VIDOR -- Once upon a Reservation, a 1978 underdog Vidor stunned Port Neches-Groves 20-15 to propel the Pirates to an astonishing 22-AAAA football championship. Tonight's 30-year anniversary of former coach Phillip Brown's team lands on Homecoming 2008 and features arguably the biggest opportunity for Vidor gridiron glory since then. Nederland and its normal playoff inhabitants invade Pirate Stadium for a game that should lift the winner into the Class 4A Division I playoff bracket. All sorts of points and possible tiebreaker numbers prevent the occasion from being for an outright playoff spot, but Nederland-at-Vidor basically means a very probable post-season appearance. Vidor football knows nothing about any post-season since 1990 and Main Street figures to be jammed with cars by 6 p.m. This matchup is not unlike our region's biggest college duel of the week pitting Texas at Texas Tech. Lubbock has not braced itself for this big of a game ever. Vidor shares Texas Tech's electric feeling to some extent on a much smaller scale. "This is definitely a new atmosphere around here," Vidor senior strong safety Devin Dart said Thursday in bright sunshine while the Pirates offense completed its final dress rehearsal. "Everyone's definitely nervous but I think we can handle it. This is real big for all our seniors." While nothing mathemically is clinched in 20-4A, Lumberton and Livingston own the inside track on 4A Division II berths, while the Division I spots probably belong to Beaumont Central and the Nederland-at-Vidor winner. There's enough insanity around here each year for Vidor's homecoming which also is thrown into the festivities. It's even a bit of a statistic lover's paradise because the teams rank 1-2 in district total offense. Kirby Bellow, Jude Vidrine, Asa Cardenas, Ryan Brady, Wareall Grogan and blockers are fashioning a Bulldogs' average of 364.3 yards a game. Vidor's right behind at 345.4 but far ahead of anyone in rushing offense with 2,173 yards in seven outings. Vidor also looks worlds better on defensive numbers, permitting 243.3 yards a night (2nd in the league) to Nederland's much more generous 334.5-yard average (7th). Nederland provides a welcome equalizer with plus 3 in turnovers to Vidor's minus 1. Translation: neither represents a safe bet... it could go either way. "They feature a power running game," Bulldogs boss Larry Neumann said. "And we haven't done a very job of trying to defend that style of attack in the last two weeks." While Neumann frets in his office about containing Vidor's explosives, 10th-year Pirates director Jeff Mathews sounds a lot like Neumann. Vidor has fine defensive numbers to be sure. Bulldogs' offensive coordinator Monte Barrow simply offers Pirates' defensive whiz George Eskue a whole bunch more to defend than most district attacks. Nederland's ability to do so much definitely keeps Vidor from feeling very confident. "The thing that scares me is every team we have played has an offense that does one thing well," Mathews said. "When you load the line, Monte is going to hurt you with the pass. When you try to cover all their receivers, he's going to outnumber you and have Grogan run the ball. Nederland can beat you so many ways." While Vidor enters with the league's strongest rushing numbers, it ranks dead last in 20-4A passing offense with 245 yards. Divided by seven games, that's 35 yards a game. Therefore it might seem as if Vidor's ability to pass would appear irrelevant. Not so fast, analysts. Just read this bold statement from Vidor's head coach. "To win this game, we're going to have to be able to throw it," Mathews said as senior Chris Teinert tossed a pass during practice. "To think we can just line up and run against Delbert's defense, we'd be crazy." Mathews astutely identified with Nederland defensive wizard Delbert Spell's long-time penchant for prospering against one-dimensional offenses. Yet Livingston predominantly runs the ball. The Lions spoiled Nederland's homecoming 55-50 and inserted a strong dose of frustration into the Bulldogs' demeanor all week. "I sense our team is frustrated by their lack of reward for what they've done and prepared for," Neumann said. "I think that has motivated us this week in a positive way. "Vidor probably has the best pursuing defense we've played to date. All 11 go to the ball. They're good tacklers. They have an excellent linebacking corps and they will try to disrupt our pass protection." Eskue will gamble and stunt and make every effort to keep Nederland passer Kirby Bellow from feeling comfortable. Neumann also frets that his senior running threat Grogan offers Bellow enough of a security blanket against Vidor's defensive front. "It will be a challenge to be able to run the ball against Vidor," Neumann indicated. "It will take an outstanding effort." On homecoming night with so much at stake, Vidor's fanatical mindset would not take Larry the least bit by surprise. NEDERLAND AT VIDOR • When: Friday, 7:30 p.m. • Where: Pirate Stadium, Vidor • Records: Nederland 3-3, 3-2; Vidor 5-2, 3-2 • Series: Nederland leads 50-8-1 • Last meeting: Nederland, 28-7

Ozen linemen commit to Lamar, sort of By CHRISTOPHER DABE January, 1, 0001 Ozen offensive linemen Daniel Lamelle and John Prescott orally committed to play football at Lamar University but will await offers from other schools, both said Thursday. Lamelle said he accepted a scholarship offer to play football at Lamar but is hopeful of receiving an offer from Georgia Tech, he said. Prescott said he accepted a scholarship offer from Lamar but will consider other options if presented. Prescott said he is interested in Central Arkansas, which is in the Southland Conference with Lamar. So far, Port Neches-Groves quarterback Harrison Tatum and Nederland wide receiver Asa Cardenas are orally committed to Lamar. Oral commitments are non-binding. A commitment is binding when a senior signs a letter of intent. The first day a senior can sign a letter of intent is Feb. 4. In 2010, Lamar will play its first season of intercollegiate football since 1989.

NBA sets '10 All-Star Game at new Cowboys stadium DALLAS -- The NBA All-Star Game is coming to the new Dallas Cowboys stadium in 2010 and plenty of good seats are available -- more than 100,000. Living up to the old adage about doing things bigger in Texas, the Dallas Mavericks and Cowboys are collaborating on hosting next season's showcase event. It will be among the first major events at the soon-to-be-completed, $1.1 billion facility in nearby Arlington. Citing sources, ESPN.com's Marc Stein reported Tuesday that the Mavericks with the NFL's Cowboys would host the 2010 All-Star Game. And if all goes according to plan, this event will set the record for the largest crowd ever to watch an NBA game, shattering the mark of 44,735 set at the 1989 All-Star Game, not-so-coincidentally held at another Texas-sized venue, the Houston Astrodome. "It's totally outrageous," NBA commissioner David Stern said. Just wait until he hears Mavs owner Mark Cuban's idea about putting the record out of reach. "If we can get people to sit on each other's laps, it could be 200,000," Cuban said, laughing. The 2010 All-Star weekend is being hyped as a collaboration between teams and cities. Some events will be held at the Dallas Convention Center, with the Mavericks' arena hosting the rookie game on Friday night and the Saturday night festivities, which include the 3-point and dunk contests. The marquee game will be Sunday, with center court right at midfield of the football stadium. "We've got complete flexibility with the configuration," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. "That's what we spent a lot of money on, to adapt it to these kinds of events." The Cowboys are also trying to lure Final Fours. They've already landed the 2011 Super Bowl, as well as the Cotton Bowl, starting Jan. 1, 2010. The All-Star announcement came during an outdoor news conference that was as over-the-top as the attendance goal. Marv Albert was the master of ceremonies, the Mavericks dancers took part and it ended with a 10-second countdown to the unveiling of the game's logo, which features a version of the Cowboys' star logo in blue and green, the Mavericks' colors. Cuban used to be against hosting the All-Star Game because he couldn't accommodate his fans and the league's commitments. But having it in Jones' stadium makes everyone happy. "I started thinking about it the minute I heard of [the stadium plans]," Cuban said. "It was just a question of whether the NBA would go along with it." Mavs president Terdema Ussery said it took Stern four months to approve their proposal. "I just wanted to make sure my guys didn't think it wasn't so crazy, and I didn't think it wasn't so crazy," Stern said. The game will be on Feb. 14, 2010. This season's game will be in Phoenix. The All-Star Game was in Dallas once before, in 1986. The 3-point contest started that year as the brainchild of a team executive and local product Spud Webb won the dunk contest. The last football stadium to host the NBA All-Star Game was San Antonio's Alamodome in 1996. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

No trick: Bobcats, Cardinals want treat tonight Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — A special Halloween night on the bayou tonight. The rival Orangefield Bobcats and Bridge City Cardinals will meet up at 7 p.m. at F.L. McClain Stadium for the 17th team in the two school’s histories. Bridge City holds a 10-6 lead all-time against Orangefield. The two squads started playing each year starting in 2000 as the Cardinals are 6-2 in those games. Orangefield was the victorious team a season ago when the Bobcats downed the Cardinals 60-35. Now the two teams meet up ago and are looking to start a winning streak to end the 2008 season. The Cardinals enter the contest 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the District 21-3A standings. The Bobcats are 1-5 on the season and 0-3 in the district loop. “I know I will not have to give a lot of pre-game speeches this week,†Orangefield Coach Blake Morrison said. “Both sets of kids are going to enjoy this game and remember it their whole lives. There is no doubt Bridge City is going to want redemption after last year just like anyone would. It is going to be a tough ball game.†While both coaches said the routines stay the same this week, the feeling around practice each day has been a little different than any other week. “It’s a big week,†Bridge City Coach Cris Stump said. “It really all started last Saturday morning when we threw out the West Orange tape and looked at Orangefield for the first time. I have not had to talk much this week. There has been a lot of spring in the kids’ step. I can stand there and tell them it is just another game but it is not.†The rivalry has taken on a new meaning this year after Hurricane Ike blew through Bridge City and left almost every home with some kind of flood damage. One of the first forms of assistance came from the Bobcats who came over to help their neighbors in a time of need. All the friendships will be pushed aside though for a few hours tonight. “I treat it like a rivalry,†Stump said. “At the start of the season, we made a big effort to not talk about last year. We don’t have to tell our guys what happened last year because they were there. Of course they are going to remember.†Last season was an offensive explosion between two teams which came into game winless on the season. There were 1,015 yards of total offense in 2007, 528 from Orangefield and 487 from Bridge City. The Bobcats are gearing up to stop the spread offense the Cardinals suit up each Friday. The Cardinals are averaging 266.7 yards a game this season and are led by the quarterback-running back duo of Josh Lemoine and Matt Menard. Menard, a freshman, has 276 yards on 49 carries and one touchdown while Lemoine, a junior, has 180 yards rushing and 812 yards passing with 10 total touchdowns. “Even with Joe (Robertson) out, the Menard kid is something special,†Morrison said. “They will be clicking on all cylinders. Coach Stump does a good job with that spread so we are going to have to be sure to line up, get to the football and play with great effort.†The Cardinals will be seeing a different style of offense for the first time in at least three weeks. Bridge City had Silsbee and West Orange-Stark in back-to-back weeks and faced similar spread offenses. Now the Bobcats bring in a grind out style featuring several different running backs. Senior Zach Peevey leads the bunch with 355 yards and two scores while Chase Parker has 232 yards and three scores and Steven Stone has 148 yards and four touchdowns. Junior quarterback Jace Statum has rushed for 146 yards and passed for another 379 with a total of two touchdowns. “Orangefield is hard-nosed, physical and they get after it,†Stump said. “It is going to be a lot different than what we have seen over the last two weeks. Our defense is going to have to switch gears. It is going to be a big challenge.†So now each coach hopes the teams can focus on executing the entire game and not getting suckered into any tricks. “It is going to be a crazy night,†Stump said. “The stands will be filled and there is no telling what you will see, on and off the field.†Morrison just wants to make sure his team leaves it all on the field. “It don’t matter when we play each other or what day it is — we want to come out and be sure we walk off the field with no regrets,†Morrison said. “It’s a big ball game and both communities really get up for this one.â€
