  1. Showdown set between Dayton, C.E. King By Nick Cioci The Baytown Sun Published October 26, 2008 Dayton and C.E. King are headed for a showdown. The Broncos and Panthers will play for first place in District 19-4A Friday at C.E. King. The teams are both 5-0 in district play and 6-1 for the season. They warmed up for the showdown with wins on Friday night. C.E. King beat Goose Creek Memorial, 51-20, while Dayton beat Galena Park, 40-7. Cody Green and A.J. Dugat led the Broncos, with Green accounting for five of their six touchdowns, three of them passes to Dugat. Green hit Dugat on a 7-yard pass and a pair of 23-yard passes for their three scoring combinations. Green’s other two scores came on the ground, a pair of one-yard runs. The only other Bronco score on the day came on a Cameron Lacour 53-yard run. The Panthers were led by Alvester Alexander and Josh Williams, who accounted for five of the Panthers’ seven touchdowns. Alexander rushed 14 times for 155 yards and three touchdowns. Williams was 1 of 5 passing for 39 yards and a touchdown to go along with 64 yards rushing and another touchdown. Cody Larson and DeMartie Allen led the way for the Patriots in the loss. Larson completed 9 of 24 passes for 108 yards and a touchdown while Allen had 20 rushes for 87 yards and two touchdowns. Patriots coach Bret Boyd said the Panthers hurt them with Alexander running counter plays. “We would overrun it trying to get people there for the option,†he said, “and they would miss a tackle on the backside and he was gone. That speed will kill you. “It’s coming though. We’re getting a little bit better every week.†In other games, Crosby got a leg up on the other 19-4A schools fighting for the final two playoff spots beating Barbers Hill 30-26 Friday night. Also, North Forest kept its playoff hopes alive with a 35-10 win over Kingwood Park. Crosby head coach Kevin Flanigan said his backups really stepped up in place of injured running back Chance Casey. “It was kind of like a preview of the future,†Flanigan said. “We started two sophomores in the backfield and two juniors at wide receiver.†Sophomore running back Forrest Tyler, sophomore quarterback Dominick Merka and junior receiver Xavier Frank led the way for the Cougars. Tyler had 18 carries for 97 yards and three touchdowns while Merka had 22 rushes for 109 yards to go along with 19 of 29 passes and 224 yards and a touchdown. Frank had six catches for 98 yards and a touchdown. On the other hand, Barbers Hill will be fighting for its playoff lives in its last two regular-season games. The Eagles host North Forest Friday and Galena Park on Nov. 7 and advance to the playoffs if they win both games. Tony Carmona and Andrew Pagan led the Eagles in Friday night’s loss with Pagan having two receptions for 80 yards and a touchdown. Carmona went 11 for 22 and 200 yards and a touchdown to go with 20 rushing attempts for 70 yards and another three touchdowns. Christian Terry, Michael Sigers and De’Andre Stewart led the way for North Forest’s Bulldogs. Sigers had eight rushes for 185 yards and two touchdowns, Stewart had 11 rushes for 149 and two scores and Terry had 10 rushes for 82 yards and a touchdown. Adrian Quintero rushed 32 times for 169 yards for Kingwood Park.

  11. Inabilty to score dooms Titans By Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News A better offensive night for the Memorial Titans at the very least would have made the final score closer against the West Brook Bruins. Despite having the ball on the Bruins’ side of the 50 seven times, including three drives that started in Bruins’ territory, Memorial was held scoreless while WB found the endzone four times, topping Port Arthur 26-0 on Friday night. To be blunt, Memorial’s defense did a fine job against a very good Bruins offense. The Titans’ D held WB to just 13 points in the first half, blocking an extra point along the way. Memorial forced two turnovers and handed the ball over to the offense in Bruin territory twice. Memorial’s special teams ace Solomon Jones even busted off a 56-yard kickoff return that set the Titans up inside Brook’s 40. Memorial had a drive end inside the Bruins’ 10-yard line, another drive stalled inside the 15, another drive ended with a blocked 33-yard field goal attempt. The Titans also closed the first half with a 31-yard hail mary from Jareal Alexander to K’Sean Wesley. Wesley made an amazing catch and did all he could to score but was stopped cold at the 1-yard line. Port Arthur just could not score. Meanwhile, Christine Michael, who was reported to possibly miss the game, scored three touchdowns. His first score came from 1-yard on his first carry of the game, giving WB a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Michael knotched an 8-yard run to give the Bruins a 13-0 lead. Then in the fourth, after the Titans had kept Michael bottled up for the most part, the senior star broke free for a 79-yard dagger. Michael’s three touchdowns gave him a total of 13 for his career against Port Arthur. He finished with 135 yards on 13 carries. Prior to his 79-yarder, Michael had just 56 yards on 12 attempts. Memorial head coach Ronnie Thompson, who has been on the wrong end of the final score against WB three times now in his reign as the Titans coach, said he thought Memorial’s defense played really hard. “I thought they did a really good job. They were really steady and held a really good running back in check for a long time. He (Michael) just wasn’t satisfied and he was not going to settle,†Thompson said. About WB’s defense and Memorial’s offense, Thompson said the Bruins put a lot of pressure on Alexander. “They put some real good pressure on our offense. We had some miscommunication around their goalline and they just did a great job. Anytime your quarterback is on the run like Jareal was tonight, anytime the quarterback is getting that kind of pressure, the quarterback will start hesitating, missing receivers and so on. They’re just a really good football team.†As good as the Brook may be, they gave the Titans a number of opportunities. The Bruins rang up 70 yards in penalties in the second half, basically handing five first downs to Memorial. Still, all the Titans could manage on offense was 239 yards and 15 total first downs. Alexander accounted for 173, throwing for 139 and rushing for 34 more. He did not turn the ball over for the first time this season, but could not get his team to the endzone. The Titans came closest to scoring on their final possession of the first half, which was set up by an 18-yard interception return by George Carter. Memorial started at WB’s 40 and had 22 seconds to score. The first play netted eight yards and took 16 seconds. The second play went 31 yards to Wesley, who caught the jump ball at WB’s 1, wrestled with all his might but was stopped by three Bruins. Memorial had another shot in the second half. After the Brook’s Christian Louis finished off a quick drive with a 9-yard scamper to stretch the Bruins lead to 20-0, Port Arthur went on its most impressive drive of the game. Starting from their own 22, the Titans went all the way to WB’s 3 on 12 plays. On third-down-and-five, Alexander scrambled for 12 yards to give Memorial a first-and-goal at the 3-yard line. Daleon Sinette, who rushed for 54 yards on 11 carries on the night, got stuffed for a loss of two on Memorial’s next play. Then Alexander lost five more on second down. An incomplete pass made it fourth down, and then after chewing more than eight minutes off the clock, the drive came to a close when the ball went over on downs. On the other side, WB piled up 403 yards on its way to its fourth straight win over the Titans, which puts the series at 4-3 in the Bruins favor. Louis piled up 207 yards through the air. His favorite target was Ryan Grant, who caught seven passes for 148 yards. The tandom also connected once for 50 yards. Memorial, which fell to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in District 21-5A, will travel to Channelview next week, needing back-to-back wins in league play in order to have a shot at making the playoffs. WB, meanwhile, improved to 5-0 and 3-0 and will square off with Baytown Sterling for its next game. Wesley was probably Port Arthur’s most impressive offensive player against the Brook. On top of his 31-yard effort on the final play of the first half, he also caught two more passes, giving him three receptions for 73 yards on the night.
  12. 50 points not enough for Nederland By DAUCY CRIZER The Port Arthur News NEDERLAND - It didn’t long to realize that Friday night’s game between Nederland and Livingston was going to come down to which team could make a key defensive stop, special teams play or maybe even who had the ball for the last possession. Neither defense did much to slow down the other team, but Livingston was the beneficiary of two critical plays in the kicking game. That was just enough for the Lions to escape Bulldog Stadium with a wild, 55-50 win to spoil Nederland’s Homecoming. “Both teams put on an offensive display and there was some defense played tonight, although you may not believe it by looking at the scoreboard,†said Nederland coach Larry Neumann. “The difference was the kicking game was kinder to them than it was to us. “Both defenses had problems with both offenses. We didn’t see anything we didn’t expect from them (Livingston). We knew they would be tough to stop. We thought they would have trouble with us. “The game really did come down to those two plays in the kicking game. If we recover the fumble instead of them scoring on the play and if we recover the onsides kick, the outcome could have been different because everything else in the game was pretty even.†The two key plays were a kickoff return for a touchdown by Dustin Harris and an offsides call against Nederland after the Bulldogs recovered an on-sides kick. Kirby Bellow hit Brent Salenga for a 13-yard scoring strike to put the Bulldogs up 35-28 with 5:56 remaining in the third quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, Nederland stripped the ball from the returner only to have Harris scoop it up like he was playing shortstop on the baseball field at his own 43 and race untouched for a 57-yard score. After Wareall Grogan scored on a 24-yard touchdown run that tied the game at 42-42, the Bulldogs surprised the Lions with an onside kick. Nederland came out of the pile with the ball, but an offsides penalty negated the recovery. Livingston then used a 12-play drive that took 6:31 off the clock to regain the lead at 49-42. The Lions coverted a big fourth-and-four from the Nederland 34 when Harris hit Brandon Prescott for a 10-yard completion, which was his first pass attempt of the game. Three plays later, Harris eluded two tackles and scrambled for 23 yards to the 9. Brandon McGowen capped the drive with a 3-yard TD plunge. After the Bulldogs turned the ball over on downs, Livingston took advantage of the short field and scored to make it a two possession game with just 1:02 left. Harris hit Keaton Parker for a 32-yard scoring strike and a missed extra point made the score 55-42. The Bulldogs didn’t go down without a fight. Bellow marched Nederland down the field and hit Asa Cardenas for a 13-yard scoring play with :10 left. The same two hooked up on a two-point conversion for the final margin. Nederland jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead, scoring on its first two possessions of the game. Grogan scored from 21 yards out and Bellow hit Cardenas for an 11-yard scoring strike. Parker put the Lions on the board with a 44-yard run. Grogan put the Bulldogs up 21-7 with a 1-yard plunge. The Lions struck twice to tie the game at 21-21 on a Jordan Nixon 21-yard TD run and a Harris 89-yard keeper around left end. Jude Vidrine scored on a 13-yard pass from Bellow to give Nederland a 28-21 halftime lead. Grogan led all rushers with 184 yards on 27 carries. Bellow completed 19-of-35 passes for 255 yards and four touchdowns, but did throw one interception. Cardenas caught nine passes for 104 yards. “Grogan is a powerful runner. He’s been running the ball better and the offensive line has been blocking better,†Neumann said. “He’s going to be tough to stop against anybody.†Harris turned on a terrific all-around game for the Lions. He completed his only two pass attempts for 42 yards and a touchdown. He rushed for 100 yards on seven carries. He returned a kickoff for a touchdown and intercepted a pass while playing cornerback. Nixon added 135 yards on 20 carries and Parker had 110 yards on nine totes. Nederland outgained Livingston 439 to 357. The Bulldogs had 255 yards passing and 184 rushing compared to 315 on the ground by the Lions and 42 passing. “I told the guys after the game that I was tremendously proud of them tonight,†commented Neumann. “It was a hard-fought game. But if I accept and they accept that’s the best we can play than we cease to get better. We can be proud of our effort, but we can’t be satisfied with it and accept that’s the best we can play. We have to work on getting better.â€
