  1. Turnovers doom PN-G at Vidor By DAUCY CRIZER Port Arthur News Sports Correspondent VIDOR - It may be hard to comprehend that barely to the mid-way point of the district season that this was a must win for both Vidor and Port Neches-Groves, but reality said that the loser willhave an uphill battle to claim one of the four playoff spots. In a toss-up game like this, you generally give the home team a slight advantage. Vidor used a ball-control offense and forced four PNG turnovers to pull out a 23-14 win Friday night at Pirate Stadium. After opening district play with a win, the Indians have now lost three straight and are 3-3 overall and 1-3 in district play. With just three district games remaining, the Indians have their backs firmly against the wall and will likely have to win all three games to have any chance of making the playoffs. “The kids never lack preparation or effort,†said PNG coach Matt Burnett. “We just haven’t had anything good happen for us the last couple of games. We just have to keep working hard in practice to get better and eventually something good will happen.†On this night, Vidor did a lot of things right. The Pirates offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage and the defense pitched a shutout in the second half. Vidor rushed the ball 52 times for 264 yards. PN-G was able to move the ball on the ground with some success, 210 yards on 36 carries, but too many Indian drives ended short of the goal line. “Vidor did a great job tonight,†Burnett said. “We made too many mistakes and turned the ball over with fumbles. We were able to move the ball up and down the field, but didn’t finish the deal and you can’t do that. You have to be able to finish drives. “I thought we did a much better job in the second half of slowing down their (Vidor) ground game. You have to give them some credit because they had a good game plan and did a good job executing.†Down 16-14, PN-G opened the second half with a 9-play drive, mostly on the ground. The big play was a Caleb Harmon rush for 30 yards to the Vidor 14. After two negative plays left a third-and-21, Harrison Tatum hit Kyler Segura for a 2-yard completion. On fourth down, Tatum was sacked for a 13-yard loss. After the Indians defense forced a punt, the offense again put a drive together deep into Pirate territory. On fourth-and-five from the Vidor 23, Tatum hit Justin Cegielski for a 2-yard completion, which turned the ball over to the Pirates. After a Vidor punt, PNG had a bad exchange of a handoff from Tatum to Harmon, which was recovered by the Pirates at the Vidor 48. PN-G’s defense held firm again, forcing the Pirates to punt from the Indians 40. The Indians’ Spencer DeRon tried to field the punt at the 2, but mishandled the ball, which was recovered by Vidor’s James Laramore. The Pirates wasted little time as Chris Teinert scored on the next play from two yards out on a quarterback sneak to push the lead to 23-14 with 5:53 left in the game. That touchdown was the only points scored in the second half by either team. “That’s what we do, we run the ball and everybody knows we’re going to run the ball,†said Vidor coach Jeff Matthews. “We tried to mix in the pass a little more tonight, but they (PN-G) are a very well coached team and they play hard. It was a shame that someone had to lose this game. Both teams fought their butts off.†Vidor used an effective ground game to control the clock for much of the first half. The Pirates had the ball for 8:26 of the first quarter and for over 15 minutes in the first half. An 11-play drive ended with a Shane Pitman fumble at the PN-G 18, which was recovered by the Indians Dallas Davis. PN-G returned the favor two plays later when Harmon coughed the ball up at the 22. The Pirates took advantage of the field position and drove to the 8 before settling for a 25-yard field goal by Travis Greenway to take a 3-0 lead. The Indians bounced back on their second possession. A steady diet of Harmon and Josh Wright moved the ball down the field. Harmon carried four times for 13 yards and Wright had four totes for 12 yards, the last of which went for a 1-yard TD plunge on fourth-and-goal to put PN-G up 7-3. Vidor answered right back. On third-and-two, Pitman broke through the line of scrimmage for a 64-yard TD run to put the Pirates back on top 10-7. After the two teams exchanged punts, it was the Indians Wright who bounced off left tackle for a 45-yard TD run to put PN-G back up 14-10. Vidor used just about all of the 5:53 remaining on the clock in the second quarter for its go-ahead score before halftime. The Pirates used a 12-play attack, all on the ground, with Teinert scoring on a 1-yard quarterback sneak with 26 seconds left. Greenway’s extra point was wide right to give Vidor a 16-14 halftime lead. Wright led all rushers with 113 yards of 15 carries for the Indians. Harmon added 83 yards on 15 totes. Harrison completed 3-of-7 passes for 23 yards. Pitman led seven Pirates that touched the ball with 107 yards on nine rushes.
  2. Central ball control defeats ‘Dogs By Tom Halliburton The Port Arthur News BEAUMONT — By midway in Friday night’s second quarter, coordinator Monte Barrow and his Nederland offense should have hopped in the bus and headed to Tinseltown. Thirty more minutes of football remained at Babe Zaharias Stadium and Nederland led 10-7 but Beaumont Central basically hogged the ball for the rest of the night. The larger, faster Jaguars installed the Wishbone offense five days earlier and proceeded to whip the Bulldogs with smash-mouth football right out of the sixties, and an in-your-face defense that earned a 20-10 homecoming night victory over the former undisputed 20-4A leaders. Nederland (3-2 and 3-1) retreated into a four-way tie for its league lead with Central, Livingston and Lumberton. The Bulldogs get to confront an even larger-sized opponent next week on Bulldog Stadium homecoming night when mammoth Livingston comes to town. “It’s going to be an interesting race,†Nederland head coach Larry Neumann acknowledged after the post-game handshakes. “Central did a better job of executing than we did. They controlled the clock. Give them credit. We’ve got to keep improving. We’re going to see some of this after tonight each week.†Central (4-2 and 2-1) primarily had operated from a double-wing backfield before this week. To better utilize its size in the line and depth at running back, the Jaguars’ coaches — led by head coach Donald Stowers and offensive chief Todd Watters — plugged in the 40-year-old alignment which helped the Texas Longhorns win back-to-back national titles in 1969 and 1970. Even though top runner Charles Thomas hurt his left knee on Central’s first offensive play, the burly Jaguars’ blockers knew exactly what Stowers had up his maroon sleeve. Central rushed 49 times for 247 yards, virtually doubling Nederland’s possession time — 31:54 to 16:06. “We put it in Monday, and the kids really responded,†Stowers said. Central may own as fine a pair of offensive guards as there is in the Golden Triangle in Parnell Wells and Jordan Henry. The Jaguars offensive line and the Wishbone caused Delbert Spell’s Nederland defense to deploy a goal-line defense quite often. The Dogs desperately had to do something to cope with Central’s physical style. “It was fun,†said halfback David Mayfield who rushed for 77 yards. “We had the right people in the right spots. It was smash-mouth football and we wanted it most. We started fiddling with on Monday and it was looking real good all the way through Thursday night.†Mayfield accounted for 21 of Central’s 68 yards on the game’s first scoring drive. Quarterback Mike Richard added 18 yards and Nijel Daw powered behind his left side for an eight-yard touchdown run with 3:34 left in the opening quarter. Nederland answered with two straight fruitful possessions, owning a 10-7 edge with 6:33 left in the half. Central practically refused to permit Barrow’s fine, high-powered offense on the field after that. Two huge third-quarter plays helped Central to gain the upper hand. Richard escaped Dogs defender Anthony Maddox in the backfield and dashed 25 yards to the Ned 11 on a third-and-10 improvisation. That mad scramble set up Juan Cardenas for a 34-yard field goal and a 17-10 Central advantage with 5:40 left in the third quarter. That juncture spelled time for Nederland to retaliate. A tenacious defense turned Bellow away, smacking the NHS passer for a three-yard loss at midfield. When Nederland had to punt it away on fourth-and-9, the Jaguars inaugurated almost a six-minute series, moving from their 6 to the NHS 15. It culminated with a 32-yard field goal by Cardenas with 9:07 to play. “Instead of giving them any short quick passes, we wanted to take those away and make them try to throw deep,†Stowers said. “We had (Jaguars cornerback) Jeffrey (Thomas) on Asa (Cardenas) and Jeffrey runs a 10.5 (100 meters) so we felt we could run with them.†Cardenas led Nederland’s receivers with four catches for 37 yards but Central prevented any of Asa’s pass reception plays from gaining more than 25 yards. The Bulldogs relied largely on the powerful dashes of the game’s leading rusher Wareall Grogan (21 for 129) to produce their early points. Grogan ran for 42 of Nederland’s yards, leading up to Taylor Trahan’s 29-yard field goal in the opening minute of the second quarter. Grogan slided through a hole in Central’s stack defense for a 16-yard scoring run at the 6:33 mark. From then, the Nederland offensive platoon would have been better off at Tinseltown. Nederland retained possession for one play with three minutes left in the half. Bellow completed a pass to Ryan Brady but Central’s Robert Williams claimed a free ball at the end of the play on Nederland’s 45. Four plays later, the Dogs had no choice but to resort to single coverage with the Jaguars aligned in a full-house backfield. Richard dropped back on first down and lobbed a 30-yard scoring pass to elusive wide-out Deajon Mitchell for a 14-10 lead with 1:02 left in the half. The determined Jags were not about to relinquish the upper hand after that. “We still have a good team, we just need to get better,†Neumann analyzed.
  3. First half dooms BC; Silsbee victorious, 21-0 Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — Last year's Bridge City Cardinals lost to the Silsbee Tigers 48-7. While the 2008 edition lost Friday night at Larry B. Ward Stadium to the Tigers, improvements have been made. The Tigers, fresh off a devastating loss to the West Orange-Stark Mustangs, came away with a 21-0 victory to improve to 2-4 on the season and 1-1 in District 21-3A play. The Cardinals are now 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the district race. Bridge City, who crowned senior Mallory Guidry as queen of homecoming, showed its biggest improvement from the first and second halves on Friday night. Silsbee led 21-0 at the break with 197 yards of total offense, 132 coming in the air. Credit Silsbee's defense though for keeping the Cardinals out of the endzone while also forcing Bridge City into timely mistakes on offense. "Defensively I cannot fault our kids effort tonight," Bridge City Coach Cris Stump said. "We played hard all night but just kept shooting ourselves in the foot on offense. It seems we would drive and pick up two or three first downs and then have a few bad plays in a row. You get off track and it is tough to come back from that." After only having 56 yards of offense in the first half, the Cardinals put up 123 in the second half only to not find a way to score. The Cardinals first possession of the second half ended with an interception after the Cardinals forced a Silsbee punt and drove down to the Tigers' 36-yard line. After another Tigers' punt the Cardinals set up on their own 34 and then marched 10 plays. The drive would eventually stall on a turnover on downs. "To be a consistent team you just have to keep working at it," Stump said. "We are still a work in progress and we are still learning. We played a full game from end to end tonight. We should have been able to put one in the endzone." Bridge City freshman running back Matt Menard continues to shine on Friday nights as the starting tailback carried the ball 12 times for 63 yards. Junior quarterback Josh Lemoine was 9-for-21 passing with two interceptions for 76 yards. Jerry Landry had two receptions for 33 yards while Menard hauled in three catches for 18 yards. Silsbee running back had 84 yards on 10 totes. Silsbee quarterback Jeremy Johnson was a crisp 11-for-18 passing with two touchdowns and one interception for 174 yards. Jared Raggio picked off Johnson late in the fourth period. A lack of tackling was the problem for the Cardinals in the first half as the Tigers chewed up 197 yards of total offense and held a 21-0 lead. The low point for Bridge City was a 29-yard touchdown catch by Chris Rountree from Johnson. Rountree was bottled up on a 4th-and-11 and seemed shy of the first down. Four Bridge City defenders could not bring Rountree down as the senior spun out of the tackles and ran it in for the Tigers' final touchdown of the first half. Rountree, who had two catches for 74 yards in the first half, also had a 45-yard touchdown reception as time expired in the first quarter. The pass from Johnson was basically a Hail Mary in which Rountree came up with the ball and broke free and ran in from about 17 yards out. Chris Barnes scored the Tigers first touchdown of the game from 7-yards out after Silsbee went 59 yards on seven plays on Silsbee's first drive of the night. "It's like I told you earlier this week, we are a better football team this year," Stump said. "We just have to learn to get over that hump. Here soon we will start to learn to make the plays to win some football games. We played a lot better than we did last week." 4. Turnovers plague OF; H-J wins, 23-13 Dan Perrine The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — Turnovers are often the deciding factor in a close game, and Friday night’s contest at F. L. McCLain Stadium was another example of that fact. The Hardin-Jefferson Hawks used four turnovers to edge past the Orangefield Bobcats 23-13. The key turnover of the game was an interception by the Hawks’ Jacoby Turner in the third quarter. Turner grabbed a fluttering pass from the Bobcats’ Jace Statum, who was hit while throwing, and Turner went the distance 90 yards for the touchdown with 30 seconds to play in the period. Hardin-Jefferson (3-3, 2-0) increased their lead to 23-7 with Turner’s return. The Hawks also got their first score in the first quarter thanks to a Bobcat mistake. Orangefield (1-4, 0-2) stopped the Hawks on their first possession and took the ball following a punt at the Bobcat 11. On their second play the Bobcats’ Chase Parker fumbled and the Hawks recovered at the Orangefield 11. Parker was playing for the injured Zach Peevey and finished the game with 94 yards on 16 carries. The Bobcat defense appeared to have held the Hawks out of the end zone and forced a field goal attempt. On third-and-6, Hardin-Jefferson’s Blake Venable rolled right and threw a pass in the end zone. A Bobcat defender and a Hawk receiver both got their hands on the ball which then caroomed behind them and was fluttering to the ground when the Hawks’ David Daniel snared the deflection for the touchdown. Stuart Flowers kicked the point-after to make the score 7-0 with 7:34 to play in the first quarter. A second fumble deep in Orangefield territory on the Bobcats’ next possession gave Hardin-Jefferson a great opportunity to add to their lead. The Bobcat defense stopped the Hawks cold forcing a 43-yard field goal attempt by Flowers. The kick had plenty of distance, but was wide left. The Bobcats actually fumbled on first down of their third possession, but that was the last mistake they made on that drive. Seven plays later would find the score tied. Statum was perfect throwing the football on the drive, completing four of four passes for 31 yards to three different receivers. On third-and-one from the Hardin-Jefferson 44 Parker popped through a hole in the line, and the chase was on which Parker won easily to the end zone for the touchdown. Derrick Evans knotted the score with a successful kick at 1:43 of the first quarter. Next possession Hardin-Jefferson regained the lead with an 8-play drive of its own. Venable completed two big passes, 17 yards to Josh Denton and 30 yards to Trey Burrell. A penalty on the pass to Burrell actually erased a touchdown and put the ball on the Orangefield 21. The drive stalled there. Flowers came on and booted a 35-yard field goal to give the Hawks the lead 10-7 with just over 9 minutes to play in the half. Penalties proved pivotal on the Hawks’ next scoring drive. Two personal foul penalties against Orangefield, the first for roughing the passer on a third down incompletion and the second for facemasking, gave the Hawks’ 30 yards of the 56 yards covered on the drive. Turner who would be heard from later on defense made a nice run from 12 yards for the touchdown. The kick was blocked leaving the score 16-7 with only about 2 minutes left in the first half. Orangefield mounted the only offensive drive of the second half, using the same balanced attack that worked so well on its other scoring drive. Statum completed three passes for 38 yards. Parker once again got the scoring honors with a 2-yard run around left end. The Bobcats went for two, but Statum’s pass was batted away. Next week Orangefield travels to Silsbee, and Hardin-Jefferson will try to remain undefeated in district at home against Hamshire-Fannett.
