Grogan fulfills dream, sparks running game for Nederland By Tom Halliburton The Port Arthur News NEDERLAND — Wareall Grogan should be careful what he wishes for — it might just happen after all. Once upon a time, a young quiet guy in Port Arthur named Jamaal Charles amazed and wowed many young athletes in his neighborhood. The Jamaal protege who visited Memorial’s practices often was an equally quiet, respectful copycat with a cherubic smile and a heart of gold. “I remember when I was a kid, I looked up to Jamaal Charles,†the 17-year-old Grogan told this reporter privately on Wednesday afternoon. Wareall attended Franklin elementary and Edison middle school . He appeared to be on track to follow in Jamaal’s Memorial footsteps. Then three years ago, the Memorial ninth grader and his family felt the wrath of Hurricane Rita in their Port Arthur residence. His mother Theresa, older brother Terrence and older sister Charelle took Wareall (pronounced War-L) to Nederland, where it appeared as if he was typecasted to become a star at defensive end. The idea of running like Jamaal appeared a very unlikely reality. The Titans would have loved to have this 5-11, 235-pounder, but he would transfer before his sophomore season to Nederland. “I would go to a lot of Memorial’s practices,†Grogan smiled. “I was going to Memorial until Rita. Our house got all messed. The rain flooded the walls and we had to move... Now I’m excited... It’s like a dream come true...†Running with the football returned to Wareall’s life as a sophomore on Nederland’s scout team but he liked his chance of playing plenty at defensive end. The opportunity came late in his sophomore year and Grogan thought he was there for keeps. “I had played defense my whole life,†he said. “I thought I was going to stay. I thought I could be an impact player at end or linebacker.†Grogan worked out a little during the summer with projected starting running back Justin Krautz. When he gained only 18 rushing yards on eight tries against West Orange-Stark, Grogan eagerly awaited Krautz’s return to running back and his homecoming at defensive end. That all changed in a week’s time with 223 yards and three touchdowns at Ozen and 152 yards and two touchdowns against PN-G. The son of Theresa Grogan and Houston resident Victor Douglas has had to come out of his shell a bit. KBMT Channel 12’s Dave Hofferth dropped in to visit with Grogan. The newspaper wanted Wareall to describe the feeling of being practically an overnight sensation. Lamar University would love to have him play for the Cardinals too. “He’s a good young man, but you’re lucky if you get more than a ‘yessir’ or a ‘no sir’ out of him,†NHS baseball boss and running backs Cody Robbins said. “He’s just real quiet. It’s not just being around the media. He’s that way all the time.†Robbins loved the chatter which Wareall produced when he grabbed the ball and dashed into Ozen’s defense on the counter sweep last Tuesday night. Ozen’s defenders are still watching the counter sweep in their dreams. Nick Smith and Stefan Huber delivered their share of textbook blocks, to be sure. But something else happened that night, too — Wareall ran with authority. “We had no idea,†NHS head coach Larry Neumann said on Wednesday afternoon right after the Ozen game. Grogan ran with confidence, not with any tentativeness at all. He kept running under control behind his pads. He stayed low, like Oregon State shorty and former Lamar Consolidated star Jacquizz Rodgers. Grogan fulfills dream, sparks running game for Nederland By Tom Halliburton The Port Arthur News “Those kinds of runners can be very effective, because they get lost in the pile surrounded by so many taller linemen,†Huber said. “He could be a really good running back for us.†He already is, Stefan. He’s among District 20-4A’s leading rushers in not much more than 2 1/2 games. “I had a bad game against West Orange, too,†Grogan said. “Then when we went to Ozen, the sweep worked all night. And then with PN-G, I think they were trying to defend the run more, and that’s what opened up the passing game.†Have District 20-4A seen the utmost of Wareall’s talent? Neumann is not so sure that Grogan has reached his ceiling. “He has a large upside,†Neumann said. “He’s certainly quiet but I believe he’s most popular with most of his peers.†After Nederland’s 41-21 win over PN-G, Wareall has become fairly popular with Bulldogs backers everywhere. Bulldog Bites Starting wide receivers Asa Cardenas and Ryan Brady missed Wednesday’s practice due to a virus which has been circulating within the team. Neumann was hoping they would be able to play on Friday at 7:30 in Little Cypress.... There were no significant injuries or lineup changes which resulted from the win against PN-G on Saturday night.... Top tacklers against PN-G were end Anthony Maddox (8 solos and 2 assists), CB Adrian Pina (6 and 5), LB Grant Lovelady (5 and 4) and DB Jimmy Swain.... Two of the most superior Nederland performers in last week’s two victories were senior center Trey Terracina and junior placekicker Taylor Trahan. Terracina was quite accurate on his variety of snaps plus his blocks. Trahan made field goals, 50-yard punts, two-step kickoffs to neutralize kick returns and a kickoff or two out of the end zone....

beaumont enterprise West Brook volleyball blanked By JOHNNIE WALTERS October, 8, 2008 Rebecca LaBauve gave many pep talks throughout the night. The West Brook volleyball coach tried her best to keep her team motivated during breaks and time outs. The Bruins listened and even talked amongst themselves to help the cause. But nothing seemed to help the Bruins against Baytown Sterling's monster offense. The Rangers had a total of 37 kills against West Brook in its first district meeting of the season. In the end, Baytown Sterling beat the Bruins 3-0 in a District 21-5A game. Sterling won 25-21, 25-11, 25-17 at the Bruins gym. Baytown Sterling, which was tied with Channelview for first place in the district, is 23-9 overall and 4-0 in district. West Brook, which was in third place before last night's contest, is 2-2 in district play. "Whenever there is a break I always tell them to stay in the game," said LaBauve afterwards. "I try and motivate them the best way I can but we came up on the losing end against Baytown tonight." West Brook, which was able to block many of Sterling's hits, fell short with its passing game. The Bruins also made many passing errors throughout the match. "When Sterling hit the ball they weren't able to make a perfect pass on the time," LaBauve said. "It threw them off there game a little. We had some good blocks and plays in the game. But our passing errors cost us the game. We made too many mistakes." Baytown Sterling was able to clinch the win in Game 3 after they established a 14-6 lead. West Brook scored two consecutive points before the Rangers outscored the Bruins 11-9 to win the final game 25-17. The Rangers' Priscilla Massengale had 15 kills while teammate Alyssa Cotton had 14. Jessica Holt had 34 assists. West Brook's Kendelyn Wheaton led the Bruins with nine kills. Lauren Chavez had 10 assists. Teammates Tiffany Schwartzenburg and Maddie Sterling both had six block assists. "Even though we lost we are still in contention for a playoff spot," LaBauve said. "We play North Shore on Friday and they are in fourth place. Our goal like any other game is to bring home a win."

Lady Cardinals fend off WO-S Van Wade The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — Getting to play a real match in their gym for the first time since Hurricane Ike came, the Bridge City Lady Cardinals got all they could handle from West Orange-Stark before they finally got past the Lady Mustangs in four tough games. Using an extremely balanced attack, the Lady Cardinals picked up their first District 21-3A win of the season, downing the winless Lady Mustangs 18-25, 25-16, 25-11, 26-24. Sara McPherson and Sarah Armand paced the Lady Cardinals (1-2 in district) with 10 kills apiece. Jordan Royal and Samantha West contributed nine kills apiece while Marlee Lopez had six kills and Emily Kosh added five. Marcquishola Solomon had a superb night for the Lady Mustangs, posting a match-high 11 kills. Teammates Ishaneka Gant and Johneshia Sims added five kills apiece. The Lady Mustangs (0-3 in district) took advantage of a slew of BC unforced errors to nab Game One. WO-S, led by the hitting of Solomon and Gant, broke away from a 6-6 tie to finish the game with a 19-12 run. The Lady Cardinals jumped out to a commanding 20-7 lead in Game Two. The Lady Mustangs got as close as eight points but Lopez finished the game off for BC with a smash. BC dominated in Game Three, building a quick 12-point lead and never looking back thanks to the hot hand of Royal and West. It look liked BC had total control in Game Three behind the swatting of Armand, who had five kills in the game. BC built up a 20-14 lead but Solomon led a late WO-S rally and the Lady Mustangs actually were able to grab a 21-20 advantage. However, the Lady Cardinals regainied their composure, scoring six of the final nine points. Kosh had a superb night in the service game, collecting 14 points and five aces. Maggie Stump notched 13 points and two aces. Bria Thibodeaux had eight points and an ace. McPherson posted six points and three aces and Mallory Guidry had six points. Sims served up 12 points and two aces for the Lady Mustangs while Kristen LeBouef had six points and two aces. BC visits Hardin-Jefferson Friday while WO-S welcomes Silsbee. print this story email this story comment on this story

Mustangs face Silsbee in 21-3A showdown Van Wade The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — Going into their District 21-3A opener Friday night against the Silsbee Tigers, the West Orange-Stark Mustangs have a lot to protect. Not only do the Mustangs want to uphold their No. 3 Class 3A state ranking, they have the business of keeping their district winning streak motoring along. Since dropping down to 3A in 2004, the Mustangs (3-0) have yet to drop a district encounter. They’ve dropped 24 straight district opponents in fairly easy fashion. However, the team that perhaps have given the Mustangs their sternest tests in loop play the last two seasons comes rolling into Dan Hooks Stadium in the form of the Tigers (1-3). “Just look at the history the two schools have had over all these years, you’re talking about some knockdown dragouts, we’ve had them against each other,†said Mustang head coach Dan Hooks. “They’ve (Silsbee) battled their tails off against us the past two years. We barely got pass them at their place a couple years back. Last year they gave us our toughest district game. We’re just up 14-6 late and of all things we get a field goal late to beat them 17-6.†The Tigers have been in every game they’ve played this season, falling short three times and beating Beaumont Kelly on a late field goal. “Silsbee’s 1-3 record is very deceptive,†said Hooks. “They’ve moved the ball well but a lot of bad stuff has happened to them, including turnovers and penalties at inopportune times. Believe me, we know we’re in for a battle, you can count on it.†The Mustangs were able to shake off some rust last week when they downed Brookshire-Royal 33-7 to close out non-district. “It’s a game the kids definitely needed,†said Hooks. “We weren’t sharp early, especially on offense, but we were able to pick things up later in that game.†Silsbee’s offense goes as quarterback Jeremy Johnson goes. The swift little QB has completed 38-of-77 passes for 545 yards and five touchdowns. He also leads the squad in rushing with 313 yards and a TD on 67 carries. “Johnson really makes their offense tick and our defense will be honing in on him,†said Hooks. “Silsbee has plenty of weapons though. He’s a guy you know you have to stop though.†Tiger receiver Chris Roundtree has 11 catches for 175 yards and a TD and is complimented by fellow receivers Chris Castle (7-133-1) and Shannon Robinson (8-113-2). Tailback Chris Barnes (25-103-0) is also seeking a breakout game. Without question, WO-S owns the stingiest defense in Southeast Texas, allowing just 121.3 yards a game, including just 54 against Brookshire-Royal last week. Defensive end Kevin Robinson leads the way with 32 stops followed by Josh Lynch (28) and Robert Jiles (25). “We’re so sound and well-coached on defense,†Hooks said. “Cornel (Thompson) has those guys so prepared each and every week. We may not have the biggest defense in the country but those kids are so well-disciplined and they have that knack of being around the football. They so quick and aggressive.†Offensively, the Mustangs are churning out 377.7 yards per contest. Senior quarterback Ortavious Hypolite has been the steady influence. He’s completed 26-of-41 passes for 408 yards and four TDs and has rushed for 175 yards and four scores. His favorite targets have been Trey Franks (11-212-2) and Josh Gloston (8-130-1). Tailback Quintavius Garrett continues to lead on the ground with his 463 yards and seven TDs. Hooks realizes whoever is victorious Friday night will have a leg up in the 21-3A race. “It’s a real pivotal game for us, no doubt,†Hooks said. “We’re going to have to have our best game of the year, it’s that time of year when you want to reach a certain level and that time is now.â€

Rock-A-Noos bullies Lady Dogs By Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News PORT NECHES — The Port Neches-Groves Lady Indians came-from-behind to beat the Nederland Lady Bulldogs in Game 1, squeezed out Game 2 and then rolled to a win in Game 3 to complete the sweep on Tuesday night in District 20-4A volleyball action. With the win, the Lady Tribe improves to 18-8 overall and 4-2 in league play while Nederland falls to 10-13 overall and 1-4 in district. Both teams will be back in action on Thursday night. Rock-A-Noos, which also swept Nederland in the team's first meeting, will host Lumberton while the Lady Bulldogs will meet Livingston in Nederland. The Mid-County matchup was mostly decided with Game 1 where Nederland controlled the lead for most of the way. The Lady Dogs led by as much as five at two points in the first contest but the Lady Tribe would not roll over. Trailing 10-5, PN-G came back to take a 11-10 lead before Nederland surged with a 5-0 run, taking command with a 15-11 advantage. The teams swapt points back and forth until the Lady Indians rallied with the score 20-16 in Nederland's favor. At that point, PN-G scored four of the next six points, forcing the Lady Dogs to a timeout. Nederland had no answer, however, as PN-G scored four of the final five points to claim a 25-23 victory in Game 1. Mallory Livingston and Alexis Smithy combined for four aces in Game 1. Lady Indians head coach Barbara Comeaux said her squad's ability to make good serves in that first game was what made the difference. "We've changed some things up in our lineup," Comeaux said. "Those changes are still new to the team and they are still adapting. I think they still have some doubts about what we're doing. I think that's part of the reason we were struggling in the first game but we served the ball well and hung in there against a good team. Nederland plays good defense." After Nederland saw Game 1 slip away, head coach Toni Leach said her Lady Dogs lost their confidence and did not fight in the final two games of the match where PN-G won 25-22 and 25-16. To Nederland's credit, the Lady Dogs kept it close, even scored three straight points to cut the game to 13-13 before the Tribe ran away with Game 2. Rock-A-Noos went on a 7-1 run to break things open in Game 2, putting Nederland down 20-14. The Lady Dogs would muscle up for two small runs to cut the game back to 23-22 but PN-G closed the game out by scoring the final two points. "We haven't learned to close games out," Leach said. "We played well in the first game and had a things under control but we let them back in it and then lost it. Until we learn how to close games out, this is what's going to happen. We lack confidence right now and with that, when we start to struggle, we get frustrated and lose control. "I think we just kind of quit tonight." For the Lady Indians, Brandi Guidry led with 11 service points and 14 assists. Alexis Smithy finished with three aces. Lauryn Stephens had 10 kills, Chelsea Horn led with eight digs and had the game-winning spike in Game 1. Stephanie Bowman led with seven blocks. Meanwhile, the Lady Dogs were led by Becca Waisath, who had 20 assists, five digs and six service points. Alicia Thevis had five kills, Alese Pinner led Nederland with eight blocks, Krista Mayer had six service points and six digs, Jeslyn Branick had eight digs and Jeanette Dorris and Layken Richard each had four service points.

‘Rivalry week’ might just be one By Dave Rogers The Internet radio folks at psnsports.com are calling this “Rivalry Week†for area football teams and they may have a point. Even if they’re a tad ahead of the curve. Add Thursday’s first-ever meeting of Goose Creek Memorial and Barbers Hill at Stallworth Stadium to Friday’s 42nd annual edition of the “Battle of Baytown†between Lee and Sterling and this weekend has the makings of a classic. Maybe. “If this is a rivalry, I’m not aware of it,†Barbers Hill head coach and athletic director Don Price said. “This is the first time we’ve played Goose Creek Memorial and we’ve never played Lee or Sterling before, except at the subvarsity levels. “I don’t know if you can call it a rivalry. We’re not building bonfires or shaving our heads. We’re 1-3 just like they are and we’re just trying to win a football game, just like they are.†Tom Ed Gooden, athletic director for the Goose Creek schools, said putting the intracity rivalry on the same weekend as what may become an intercity rivalry wasn’t his idea. “ Well, we just plan for them and make the best of them,†he said of hosting games at Stallworth Stadium. “It would probably be better if we didn’t have two (games) back-to-back, but at the same time, that’s the way the schedule fell. We deal with it. “It ought to be exciting as far as whole district is concerned.†Hurricane Ike caused the cancellation of what would have been three home games at Stallworth Stadium on as many nights, back when Memorial was set to play Bellaire Episcopal on Thursday, Sept. 11, Lee host Clear Creek on Friday, Sept. 12, and Sterling take on Pasadena Rayburn Saturday, Sept. 13. Stadium workers had their own fire drill last week, when the Memorial-Crosby game was switched to Stallworth on little more than 24 hours notice, with that game being held Friday ahead of Saturday night’s long-scheduled Lee-Katy Taylor game. “Any time you have two big crowds back to back, it doesn’t give grounds people, maintenance, operation people time to get ready,†Gooden said. “Last week, it was really hectic, but I was really proud of our people and especially Sandy (athletics business manager Sandy Martin)for putting it together in a hurry.†Putting another game on the night before “The Game†will call for some adjustments. “We spend a lot of time getting ready for the Lee-Sterling game, decorations and things,†Gooden said. “Some of those decorations won’t be able to be set up until Friday, but that’s OK.†Another change is that a Thursday night Barbers Hill-Memorial game at Stallworth will mean that the stadium can no longer host the subvarsity games for Lee and Sterling. “Those games will be on the campuses. That’s a little different, “ Gooden said. “The JV game at Sterling High School and the freshman games will be at Sultis Stadium at Lee. The last two years we played the JV games at the stadium (Stallworth). The athletic director for the Baytown schools is another who isn’t ready yet to buy into the “rivalry†between Barbers Hill and Memorial. “The big rivalry here has always been the game, Lee versus Sterling. Now, Goose Creek Memorial and Barbers Hill is on the block and I think people are assuming there will be a rivalry because their campuses aren’t that far apart,†Gooden said. “But that remains to be seen. “A lot of times your rivals are geographic. Other times it’s competitive, who you’re competing against to win championships. We’d love for this one to be both of those.†Smart money is that a rivalry between Baytown Lee and Barbers Hill is more likely than one between Memorial and Barbers Hill. That’s because the expectation is that Memorial will end up in Class 5A and Lee will drop to 4A. “I can’t really predict that,†Gooden said when asked about Memorial going to 5A. “We would hope that it wouldn’t be next go-round. We’d hope we could go four years, maybe even six years before they go 5A. “Some folks might speculate Lee might not be 5A in next realignment, but we still have a year and a half in this alignment. We’ll play that other one when it happens.†Lee head coach Dick Olin is expecting change to come in a hurry. “We’ll play them (Barbers Hill) in two years; we’ll be a 4A,†Olin said. “There will be a rivalry there. I know Don (Price) does a great job and before him coach (Kenneth) Skidmore. “I know we’ve played them in girls sports and they do a great job there. They’re a really successful program out there. They’ve got great facilities and their coaches do a great job. “As far as a rivalry, I don’t know if one exists yet, but I’m sure it will.â€
