  2. BC baseball star Hicks enrolls at Barbe HS in Lake Charles, La. Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — For two seasons Matt Hicks has given his all to the Bridge City Cardinals baseball team. Hicks confirmed a very tough decision on Monday that the junior has enrolled at A.M. Barbe High School in Lake Charles, La. “None of the rumors were true up until about a week ago,†Hicks said. “I made the final decision about two days ago. It was not a spur of the moment decision. Right now this is the best situation for me. I wanted to go to Barbe for my education, baseball and future college plans.†Hicks, the Defensive Player of the Year on the 2008 All-Orange Leader Baseball Team, has always said his No. 1 goal is to play baseball at Louisiana State University. “That is the main reason for this move,†Hicks said. “It was an extremely hard decision to make.†Hicks’ family, like so many others in Bridge City, was hit hard by Hurricane Ike. Hick’s mother, father and sister all lost homes to Ike, including a beach house in the Crystal Beach area. Hicks’ father, Tom, will move to Lake Charles, La. so the family can make the transfer possible. “Everything was looking great with Chad (Landry) being the new coach and then it all goes away,†Hicks said. “If I didn’t think this was not better for me, I would never have done it. I loved my time at Bridge City. Those were two of the greatest years I have ever had. My biggest deal is I did not want to leave my friends. I will still be down a lot because I will only be 45 minutes away.†Hicks had great success with the Cardinals as a freshman and sophomore. The Cardinals reached the regional finals when Hicks was a freshman and it was Hicks who took the mound in Game 3 against Jasper who went on to win the state title. Hicks went 5 2/3 innings giving up two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and just one walk. A year ago Hicks and the Cardinals again lost to the Bulldogs, this time in the regional quarterfinals in a 5-1 decision. Hicks did his part on the mound giving up just six hits with six strike outs and one walk. The Bucs won the 5A Louisiana state championship in 2008 after reaching the state finals in 2007. Barbe won the state championship in 2006 after only reaching the regionals in 2004 and 2005. Before that the Bucs had reached the state championship round every year since 1998; with championships in 1998, 2000 and 2001. The Bucs finished last year No. 7 in the nation and have been nationally ranked every year since 1993 except 2004. Bridge City Athletic Director Cris Stump said there has been a concern within the department of athletes forced to move after Ike. “We have had only a couple go to other schools right now,†Stump said. “You just hope it ends up not being a bunch of them. It is a concern because you would like to keep all of them.†Stump and other Bridge City officials have tried to ensure all Cardinals students and parents school would resume at Bridge City and sports will be played. “What is hard with some of the younger players is when mom and dad are working,†Stump said. “Then the kid has no way of getting to school. We have told them if they need a ride we will come get them. Bridge City is not a huge place and everyone seems to know everyone so it becomes word of mouth.†Stump reported the Cardinals are even set to play a JV football game this week.

  8. RSS, Lee amp up for ‘The Game’ By Dave Rogers Published October 5, 2008 The 42nd edition of “The Battle of Baytown,†also known as “The Game†is coming up next Friday at Stallworth Stadium. Lee versus Sterling is shaping up to be a good game this year, and early indications are it should pit Lee’s strong defense against Sterling’s high-scoring offense. Zero-zero? Maybe. Probably not. But with Sterling off to a 3-1 start and Lee 1-2 heading into the matchup which will also serve as each team’s District 21-5A opener, perhaps this will be the first time in the 2000s for the Rangers to come away winners of The Game. Lee leads the series 25-14-2. Sterling just hopes this year is different than the last time it got off to a good start. Then, too, a hurricane (Rita then, Ike now) played havoc with the season. But Sterling carried a 3-4 record into a season finale version of The Game against a winless Lee bunch. Sure enough the Ganders won to avoid going 0-8 for the season. ••• Two teams having no problem with wins are Utah and Brigham Young University. Each school has a key Baytown connection. Utah improved to 6-0 and became the first team in the country to make itself bowl eligible last Thursday. To do it, the Utes scored 11 points in the final 89 seconds to defeat Oregon State 31-28. Brian Johnson, Utah’s senior quarterback and former Lee standout, was nearly perfect in the final two minutes as he led his team on a drive to tie it, and then another to win it. “When we were down eight, I saw a few people leaving and thought ‘They’re about to miss a show,’†Johnson said. The offensive player of the year in District 22-5A in 2003, Johnson tied the game with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Bradon Godfrey and a two-point conversion run with 1:29 remaining. Oregon State went three-and-out and the Utes got the ball back with 1:06 left. Johnson drove Utah down to set up Louie Sakoda’s game-winning 37-yard field goal. A day later, BYU whipped Utah State 34-14 to improve to 5-0. Senior Michael Reed, a former Gander all-stater who normally starts at receiver for the Cougars, sat this one out after undergoing surgery for a torn meniscus in his knee. Reed is expected back for BYU’s game against New Mexico this weekend. ••• Speaking of Oregon State, the team Utah rallied to beat Thursday, that’s the same team that knocked off No. 1 ranked USC a week ago. Leading the way for the Beavers with 186 yards rushing and two touchdowns was freshman Jacquizz Rodgers, the Texas player of the year last year for state champion Lamar Consolidated. Incredibly, Rodgers wasn’t nominated among eight finalists for the Greater Houston offensive player of the year last winter. Lee coach Dick Olin, who was on the selection committee, said at the time that the all-time Texas high school touchdown scorer just wasn’t as impressive on the film as the ones chosen. ••• For anyone who somehow hasn’t heard: our neighbors to the west and new 21-5A rivals North Shore Mustangs won their 73rd consecutive regular season game Friday. They had to score with 26 seconds left for the 28-21 win over Lufkin that allowed them to break the Texas all-time record of 72 set by Southlake Carroll from 1986-94.
