Lee looking for quick start By Dave Rogers Published October 3, 2008 Katy schools had an advantage on those from Baytown last week; they had returned to play after Hurricane Ike a week earlier. It made a definite difference, Lee coach Dick Olin believes. “We came out and played like a team that hadn’t played in three weeks,†Olin said of his team falling behind 24-6 at halftime before losing to Katy Seven Lakes 24-20. “The second half we played a lot better.†Tonight, the Ganders will be looking for four quarters of good play when they take on Katy Taylor at 7 p.m. at Stallworth Stadium. Taylor’s Mustangs took advantage of Sterling turnovers for a 41-27 win in Baytown last Saturday. Lee is 1-1 on the season, Taylor is 3-1. “Katy Taylor is a good team that blitzes all the time, and that makes a difference,†Lee head coach Dick Olin said. “They have big linemen like all Katy teams do. I don’t know what’s in their water over there. Katy Taylor looks big on film and if you look big on film, that’s not a good sign (for Lee).†Statistically, it’s hard to knock Lee’s undersized defense, though. The Ganders have given up only 146 yards per game so far, with one of their biggest players, senior nose tackle Zac Zellars, recording three sacks and several other tackles in the offensive backfield. “He’s a real good player,†Olin said of Zellars. Another good player for the Ganders against Seven Lakes was backup quarterback Jarrett Havins. He came on in the third quarter and led Lee to two touchdowns, doing the scoring honors both times. Lee is averaging 275 yards of total offense per game after picking up 347 yards last week. Havins, however, won’t start against Katy Taylor, Olin said. “We’ll probably start Tim Jirrels,†the coach said. “Havins got stepped on in practice Wednesday and sprained his ankle. But he will be available to play if we need him.†Paul Martinez rushed for a touchdown and 115 of the Ganders’ 227 yards last week. “When you run the football we did, that was a good outing,†Olin said. “But the first drive they had and the next drive kind of indicated it might not be our night.†Seven Lakes used a pass interference call and three third-down conversions to score the first time it had the ball. A 70-yard pass play did the trick on the second possession. “That pass play went from a pick to a knockdown to a touchdown,†Olin said, noting two of his players had hands on the ball before receiver Anthony Kendrick made a juggling snag. “Defensively, we played pretty well, really,†Olin said. He’d like a repeat against Taylor’s Mustangs. He’d like Baytown to rise up against a Katy team this time.

Sterling wants to leave turnovers in the past By Dave Rogers Published October 3, 2008 There’s nothing like turnovers to harsh your mellow. And now that the Sterling Rangers have seen the high of back-to-back wins to start the season and the low of last week’s 41-27 loss to Katy Taylor, the know which they prefer. “Win,†Ranger coach Herb Minyard said when asked about his team’s game plan for tonight’s 7:30 p.m. game at New Caney’s Don Ford Stadium. Now 2-1 for the season, Sterling’s football team takes on 1-2 New Caney, a newly minted Class 5A team, in its final non-district game. “This is our last opportunity to play before we all start district, and that’s when it really counts,†Minyard said. “It’s also our first road game. And we’re ready to get back on the other side of the win-loss column.†Keagan Kogut, the senior quarterback who sparked the Rangers to pre-hurricane wins over La Porte and South Houston, threw a pair of interceptions and coughed up two fumbles last week to make Katy Taylor’s job easy. The Ranger defense helped by failing to line up correctly on two plays that turned into a touchdown pass and a long running play. “We just beat ourselves,†Minyard said. “You can’t turn the ball over, period, but you especially can’t turn it over against a good team. “But all that can be corrected. And if you throw the ball around as much as we do, you’re going to get a few picked off.†New Caney scored an opening 10-0 win over Spring Woods, then lost 31-6 to Magnolia before Hurricane Ike before losing 34-0 to Cleveland last week. The Eagles have scored only two touchdowns so far this season. Chad Jackson leads New Caney’s offense with 130 yards rushing and teammates Christian Perez and Joey Sullivan have each scored rushing touchdowns. Kogut has eight touchdown passes and 625 yards through the air, also leading Sterling in rushing with 116 yards. Leroy Clarke has scored two touchdowns on the grounds and Dwain Nicholas has three TD catches for the Rangers. “New Caney has a lot of kids returning on defense,†Minyard said. “This ought to be a good game. We just have to take care of the football, and if we line up correctly on defense that should take care of it.†Directions to Don Ford Stadium: Take US 59 North to Community Drive exit, go left and under the freeway. Stay on the service road, heading south, to Forest Colony Drive. Stadium is on Forest Colony Drive.

Panthers open 23-2A district play at Hardin By Nick Cioci The Baytown Sun Published October 3, 2008 The Anahuac Panthers look to correct the mistakes they made against Hardin-Jefferson last week when they take on the Hardin Hornets tonight at 7:30 p.m. The game is the District 23-2A opener for both teams. “We have to cut down on our turnovers,†Anahuac head coach Darrell Barbay said. “They really cost us in the second half against Hardin-Jefferson. We just need to hang onto the football.†Another thing Barbay said is the 2-2 Panthers need to be in better shape than they were last week. “I felt we were out of shape after the hurricane came through and threw our schedules off,†he said. “I feel we are in better shape though this week after getting to play last week and practice all this week. That should help us a lot, too.†Barbay said he would like his players to play hard for four quarters. “Last week was a long, stressful week,†he said. “This week the players were back in a normal routine so I feel that will help us. But I just want them to go out there and play for four quarters. The winning and losing will take care of itself if they do that.†The Hornets are 2-1 this year and are led by quarterback John Stelly and running backs Jeremy Dickey and Mitch Villemez. Stelly is 26 for 45 this year for 419 yards while Dickey has 26 carries for 158 yards. Villemez is the team’s leading rusher and touchdown scorer with 343 yards rushing on 51 attempts for nine touchdowns. “We have to stop Villemez,†Barbay said. “If we can stop him we have a good chance to win.†The Panthers are led by running back Deior McNeil and quarterback Jacob Pesina. Pesina is 12 for 31 for 211 yards and one touchdown while McNeil has 43 rushes for 300 yards for the Panthers. Directions to Hardin: Take Texas 61 14.2 miles north of I-10, turn left at Texas 90 for 11 miles. Turn right at Texas 146 for 7.5 miles, turn right at FM 834, turn left at Berry. ••• -

From smoaky.com Longview to forfeit win against Evangel... Longview athletic director Pat Collins confirmed the Longview football program will forfeit their 52-22 victory against Shreveport Evangel. Apparently, after checking his roster following the Evangel game, head coach John King discovered a player, who was on the roster who no longer had eligibility, played in the fourth quarter, one play. Collins said Longview self-reported the violation, and it will go before the district committee. If the forfeit stands, Longview's record will drop to 3-2. Longview athletic director Pat Collins, appearing on David Smoak's Sports Talk on KTBB Radio said, "this was an honest mistake, but we want to do what's right, and I met with the Marshall superintendent, who is our district chair, and told them of our violation."
