Cardinals expect emotional game, win Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — It will be a feel-good story when the Bridge City Cardinals run out on the field at Red Devil Stadium in Huntington tonight. It could very well be the feel-good story in the state of Texas. The Cardinals (1-1) return to football action just under three weeks after Hurricane Ike tore through Bridge City leaving many residents without a house to call home. Bridge City will face Huntington at 7:30 p.m. in the Cardinals first football game since Sept. 5, a 28-26 loss to Kountze. The Red Devils lost 21-14 last Friday to New Waverly. Redbirds Coach Cris Stump knows it will be an emotional scene when the Cardinals tear through the introduction sign for the first time, but after that Stump expects a win. “From the start of the season I have told the kids the next game is the most important game,†Stump said. “Last week was practicing just to get out there. This week has been a regular game week and we have had pretty good workouts.†The Cardinals had 45 players return for the first practice last Thursday and had near 60 on Wednesday. The trip to Huntington, which is about 10 miles away from Lufkin, will take a little extra time for players and fans but Stump does not think it will matter. “We are hoping for a pretty good crowd,†Stump said. “This will give people a chance to get away just for a little bit and watch the Cardinals play football. “We want to win and the kids understand that. If you are going to do the work, you might as well do it to win.†BCISD is ready to provide buses to Red Devil Stadium for BC fans. Residents can call 697-3236 to reserve a seat. The Cardinals have been led by their offense so far in 2008. Junior running back Joe Robertson has carried the football 26 times for 191 yards and three touchdowns. Junior quarterback Josh Lemoine has rushed for 126 on 27 carries with a score while also throwing for 301 yards and five touchdowns. Lemoine is 16-for-37 passing with one interception. A host of Cardinals have over two receptions each with Cory Moseley and Luke Rhodes each have four. Moseley has 62 yards with two scores while Rhodes has 23 yards. Jerry Landry has hauled in three receptions for 93 yards and two scores. Both Robertson and Dustin Breaux each have two receptions. The Cardinals offense is averaging 309 yards and 29 points a game. Bridge City’s defensive numbers took a shot up after the Kountze game who rushed for 360 yards. The Cardinals are giving up 369.5 yards and 24 points a game, still a great improvement from 2007. “Huntington offensively runs a lot of shotgun formations,†Stump said. “They have a big quarterback and a running back and wide receiver who can hurt you. On defense they have a couple linebackers who move around well. “I expect we will be a little rusty. We still have to go out and improve on our last game. I really don’t know what to expect after having three weeks off but I do expect them to play hard and play to win this game.†If the Cardinals do pull it off, a fairy tale ending will cap off an already emotional story.

Posted From the 3A Site La Grange ISD takes up money for H-F hurricane victims My kid came home from school and said that the Supt. of La Grange had requested students to donate money if they could, to give to the Hamshire Fannett people. I think this is a wonderful act of kindness from the people of La Grange. The 4th and 5th graders alone donated almost 1,000.00. I do not know about the other campuses but I am guessing over 3,000.00 could be giving to Hamshire Fannett tonight at the game. Way to go community of La Grange!! When something like IKE happens it puts things in perspective. -
[Hidden Content] Barbay knows district still runs through Newton By JIMMY GALVAN Editor Newsboy file photo ONE KEY RETURNEE FOR the Newton Eagles is James Burch, who will handle all the kicking duties for the Eagles this year. Burch is also a threat running the ball for Newton as well. Talk to most football experts and they will tell you that District 22-2A will come down to one contest this year — Kirbyville at Newton, Friday, Nov. 7. "I don't know about them beating us," said Newton Head Football Coach Curtis Barbay. "They haven't beat us in 20 years. They are mouthing off over there but they won't put up any money over there. "Kirbyville will do a good job over there," Barbay said. "They are coached better and they have the same kind of kids we have and they have been winning." Barbay said he thinks the district will be down this year after a competitive 2007 season. "I think Hemphill, Shelbyville and Woodville will not be very good this year," Barbay said. "They may surprise me but I think San Augustine, Kirbyville and us will be the top three teams in the district." Barbay said he doesn't mind being the top dog in the district with a bulls-eye on their back every time they step on the field. "I would rather be that team then when they are not aiming at you at all," Barbay said. He also minces no words about his opponents when he prepares his team for games. "If I see a team that is no good, I am not like many coaches that will lie to their players and see the good in anybody," Barbay said. "If they ain't worth a *****, I will tell them they ain't worth a ****. If they are good, I will give them the respect that they have earned. I won't say they are good when they ain't worth a crap." And what would he say about the Newton Eagles if he had to prepare a game against them? "I would tell the team that they play hard and those kids don't give up no matter what the score is," Barbay said. "I know they will play to the bitter end. Don't let up on them because they are not going to let up on you." This year, Newton will play a Week 0 game and that's a first for Barbay. Barbay has traditionally not been a fan of the Week 0 games and hadn't participated in one in recent years. But this year, he saw the need to get his Eagles on the field during the Week 0 and scheduled a home contest with Corrigan-Camden. "I couldn't find another game this year," Barbay said as to the reason the Eagles are playing the Week 0 contest. "Last year we only played nine. Corrigan couldn't get anybody to play and that was the only open week they had. "I wanted to play the game worse than they did," Barbay said. "But they didn't want nine games and they didn't want to play us. But they got it and we have to prepare for it." As is the tradition in Newton, the Eagles will take on quite a non-district schedule this year. Aside from Corrigan- Camden, Newton will take on East Chambers, Diboll, Silsbee and Orangefield this year in non-district games. "We try to play people that have a good chance of beating us," Barbay said. "I don't like playing somebody that know that we are going to beat. Our schedule easier this year than has been in a long time but that doesn't mean we will win them all either. "I like playing teams that are classification above us such as Diboll, Orangefield and Silsbee," Barbay said. think it helps determine where you are going be. If you don't play somebody in the first five weeks and then step out and play somebody good in district, you will be shell-shocked." Barbay said in the first couple rounds of the Class 2A playoffs, the opponents are not even up to par with the non-district opponents on the Eagles' schedule. "We will see teams that run fast, that are tough in non-district," Barbay said. The legendary coach said he is looking forward the challenge of the 2008 season. "I think we have a good chance this year," Barbay said. "I think we have a good team." And while other programs hope to make the playoffs, at Newton the goal is a state championship. "We know we are going to be in the playoffs every year," Barbay said. "The last couple of years, we didn't have great teams but we had better teams than the teams that beat us. "I think luck plays a big part in it and I think the Lord has a script already made whenever you go into the playoffs," Barbay said. "Hopefully, He put in a good word for you."

Searchers ID 5 'Hot Spots' for Ike Victims GALVESTON, Texas (AP) - Search teams looking for as many as 50 people who remain missing since Hurricane Ike have identified five "hot spots" where they will focus their efforts on Thursday, officials said. Mounds of debris scattered across Bolivar Peninsula likely conceal the remains of those still missing, authorities said. Long-awaited reinforcements from state search-and-rescue units are expected to arrive Thursday with trained dog teams to search for bodies. "The sooner we can get closure the better," Crystal Beach Volunteer Fire Chief David Loop said in a story in the Houston Chronicle. "My main concern is to make sure we do everything possible and make every effort we can to have a good, clean recovery." The search for bodies is also expected to move offshore to uninhabited Goat Island, where one storm victim's body was already found and where large, remote piles of debris have collected. On Wednesday, trained dogs identified several potential body sites amid the remains of beach houses. Searchers flagged at least two sites that will receive closer inspection. "It's going to take more time and manpower to go sifting through all the debris," Galveston County Medical Examiner Stephen Pustilnik told the newspaper. "All that stuff has to be overturned and sifted through and taken to a place where it can be spread out and looked at." The renewed efforts to find bodies has come too late for some, including Raul "Roy" Arrambide, whose mother, sister and nephew disappeared while evacuating from a beach house in Port Bolivar. The two vehicles they left in have been found, with no sign of bodies. "I really don't have any confidence with the way this is being done," Arrambide said. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press.
