Daytown trounces Memorial, 49-0 By Jerry Michalsky Contributor Published October 1, 2008 Playing tough with District favorite Dayton for the first qua ter and half, turnovers doomed Goose Creek Memorial late in the second quarter as three turnovers were quickly turned in to 21 points in a spam of less than five minutes late in the first half as the Patriots fell to Dayton 49-0, Tuesday night at Stallworth stadium in both teams’ district opener. After the Broncos took their opening series and quickly marched 48-yards on five plays to make it 6-0, it was the Memorial defense that turned it up a notch. A.J. Dugat got Dayton on the board at the 9:04 mark of the first quarter with a one yard run. That is when the Patriot defense got stingy, holding the Broncos on two fourth down conversions and also blocking a Dayton punt. Midway through the first quarter it was Kendal Doyle coming from the outside to block a Brian McBride punt to give the Patriots the ball at the Bronco 30-yard line. Facing a fourth and 10 from the Dayton 30-yard line, Memorial quarterback Cody Larson hit Patrick Wood for nine yards at the 21-yard line. The pass would come up a yard short of the first down which turned it back over to the Bronco offense. Then on consecutive possessions it was Joseph St.Julian stopping the Dayton offense cold on back-to-back series forcing the Bronco offense to turn it over on downs. The Dayton defense itself was sty fling on the night by limiting the Patriots offense to only 56 yards of total offense. With the Patriots facing a third and eight at the Bronco 38-yard line it was Dylan Bethea stepping in front of a Larson pass and returning it 52 yards to the Memorial 28-yard line. Five plays later it was Cody Green hooking up with Dugat from four yards out to make it 14-0. Two scores in a span of :16 seconds late in the first half would make it 28-0 at the half as Dugat picked off a Larson pass deep in Patriot territory. Green scored from five yards, then hit Payton Ploch from 28-yards with 1:03 left in the half to extend the lead. Memorial (0-3, 0-1), then got a break to start the second half as Isaiah Wimberly recovered the second kickoff at the Bronco 16-yard line. The drive would stall as Larson was sacked on a fourth down attempt to end the threat. Taking over at their own 31-yard line, it was Dayton quickly going 69-yards on four plays to make it 35-0. The drive would be capped off by a Green to Dugat 35-yard touchdown pass. Dayton (2-1, 1-0), finished its scoring as Green hit Ploch from five yards out and Evan Brown added a five yard score late in the game. Green finished the night with 238-yard passing on 19 of 24 attempts. Dugat lead all receivers with 10-catches for 163-yards while Ploch added eight receptions for 75-yards. Larson finished with 44-yard passing to lead the Patriots while Wood and Brandon Rhoden both had two catches each. Both teams will only have three days off before returning to district play on Saturday. Memorial will be at Crosby while the Broncos will welcome North Forest. Game time is set for 7:00 P.M.

Barbers Hill routed by CE King By Dave Rogers Published October 1, 2008 HOUSTON – In a game of big plays, Barbers Hill didn’t get enough of them Tuesday night. The District 19-4A opener for both teams and their restart after Hurricane Ike featured four touchdown plays of 80 yards or more. C.E. King had three of them and won the offensive shootout 41-27 at Crenshaw Stadium. Panther quarterback Josh Williams ran for 87 yards and two touchdowns and passed for 113 and three more scored as C.E. King piled up 470 total yards and improved to 2-1 on the season. Barbers Hill, which got four touchdowns and 371 of its 389 total yards from quarterback Tony Carmona, dropped to 0-3 for the season. The Eagles take another shot at earning their first win when they host Kingwood Park Saturday night at 7 p.m. Carmona completed 17 of 34 passes for 272 yards and a pair of scores and ran for 99 yards and another two. His 86-yarder to Caleb Stork, on which Stork out-battled Panther DB Jacobe Hollins for the ball at the 40, allowed the Eagles to get within seven points at 27-20 late in the third quarter after they had trailed 27-6 early in the second half. But the Panthers answered with an 84-yard TD pass from Williams to Deondre Waller to open the fourth quarter that was almost a carbon copy of the jump-ball situation on Stork’s score. Then Williams scored on a five-yard run with 4:12 to give C.E. King a 41-20 lead with 4:12 left. The final Eagle score was a 16-yard pass from Carmona to Andres Pagan with 1:27 remaining. Stork finished with five receptions for 130 yards for Barbers Hill and running back Alvester Alexander topped a 357-yard ground game for the Panthers, rushing for 191 yards on 17 carries. The Panthers led 14-6 at the break despite three turnovers as the Eagles missed a couple of golden opportunities to score. C.E. King’s Terrance Guy fumbled the game’s first offensive play, giving Barbers Hill a first down at Panther 24. But the Eagles failed to move the ball, being pushed back to the 32 when Carmona was sacked and his nine-yard pass to Stork came up nine yards shy of a first. The Eagles started their next drive at midfield and Carmona, completing a 25-yarder to Andres Pagan, took them to a first-and-goal at the 5. On the next play he dived toward the goal line and appeared to come up short. But the ball rolled into the end zone where C.E. King’s Byron Jones recovered for a touchback. And the Panthers wasted no time in taking advantage of that break. King quarterback Josh Williams scored from 80 yards out, dashing around left end, and juked past two to three defenders and left everyone else in his wake. Kevin Johnson’s fumble recovery stopped C.E. King’s next drive at the Eagle 24, and from there Barbers Hill went 76 yards in 13 plays for the potential game-tying score. Carmona got six points on a 17-yard keeper around right end, but the Ricardo Cavazos’ extra-point try was blocked, leaving the Panthers ahead 7-6 with 5:46 left in the first half. King went 66 yard in six plays to up its lead to 14-6 when Williams hit receiver Patrick Johnson with a five-yard fade pass with 2:58 left in the half. The Eagles had one last chance to score, when Williams fumbled at the King 25 with 2 seconds left at the half. After Azee Caldwell’s recovery, Cavazos tried a 42-yard field goal and was just short as the halftime buzzer sounded. Unlike their first play of the game – a fumble – the Panthers scored to open the second half. Alexander bounced through a hole at right tackle, then raced down the right sideline 82 yards to put the hosts up 21-6. They made it 27-6 a couple of minutes later when Williams passed 19 yards to running back Bruce Green for a score. Barbers Hill then mounted its second double-digit play drive of the game, going 52 yards in 10 plays to score on Carmona’s one-yard sneak to cut C.E. King’s lead to 27-12 with 5:35 left in the third quarter.

PN-G rushes past LC-M, 34-7 By Gabriel Pruett Southeast Texas News Group LITTLE CYPRESS - The Port Neches-Groves Indians stuck to their bread and butter on offense Tuesday night and it worked to almost perfection. The plan was obvious to stick to the running game and wear down the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Battlin’ Bears. PN-G (3-0, 1-0) trounced LC-M’s (0-2, 0-1) defense for 323 yards on the ground en route to a 34-7 victory to open the District 20-4A schedule for both teams. Josh Wright was the workhorse for the Indians on this night as the senior bruised his way for 155 yards on 20 carries with three scores. LC-M was outgained 412-145 in the game. PN-G also led with 23 first downs compared to just nine for the Bears. While the Indians offense was steam rolling, the defense was punishing especially in the first half. The Bears Blake Perry led the Bears with 29 yards on six carries and sophomore quarterback Hunter Gonzales continued to show potential. Gonzales was 9-for-18 passing for 50 yards with no interceptions. The Bears lone score came in the fourth quarter on a halfback option as Chad Humphrey hooked up with Samuel Burton in the back of end zone to seal the final score. PN-G only scored once in the entire second half after putting up 28 points in the first two frames. The second half score came with 7:59 left in the game as Jareb Logan found paydirt from 1-yard out. It was the Indians next to last drive of the night and PN-G did a great job running down the clock. The scoring drive started on the PN-G 23 yard line and took nine plays to finish. PN-G quarterback Harrison Tatum continued to show a great arm in his final season with the Indians as he was 5-for-9 for 89 yards and no interceptions. Spencer DeRon hauled in two receptions for 58 yards and Kyler Segura had 25 yards on two catches. The first half was all Indians as the rushing attack was the main focus of the PN-G attack. PN-G rushes past LC-M, 34-7 By Gabriel Pruett Southeast Texas News Group PN-G led 28-0 at the break after rushing for 180 yards, 129 coming off the legs of Wright. It all started on the first drive of the night as PN-G took over on the Bears’ 48-yard line after David St. Clair took the opening kick 42 yards. Wright teamed up with Harmon for the next 48 yards, ending with a 7-yard touchdown scamper to make it 7-0 with 7:11 left in the first. A LC-M punt set the Indians up at their own 19-yard line with 4:50 left in the first period. Wright carried the first play of the drive for 34 yards bringing PN-G down to the Bears 47-yard line. Tatum showed off his arm on the next play, finding a wide open Spencer DeRon. DeRon did the rest of the work and scored from 47 yards out to make it 14-0 with 4:21 left in the first quarter. LC-M’s offense could only muster up seven yards on the next series and once again gave PN-G great field position as the Indians set up on their own 49. After Harmon scooted for three yards, Tatum found DeRon for 11 yards. Two plays later it was Kyler Segura hauling in a 13-yard strike from Tatum bringing PN-G down to the LC-M 19-yard line. Harmon ran for another three yards before Wright struck once again. Wright went at the right side of the LC-M defense again and it paid off for a 16-yard touchdown scamper to bring the score to 21-0 with 11:11 left in the first half. It took until right before the break for PN-G to make it 28-0 as Wright scored his third touchdown of the first half, this time from 1-yard out. Wright had 20 yards on the 39-yard scoring drive. The Indians’ defense was equally impressive as the PN-G defense as the Bears were limited to just 26 yards of offense in the first half. -
