  2. Orangefield opens gym to rival Bridge City Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — If the Orangefield Lady Bobcats believe in karma, good things will definitely be on the way to the team soon. Orangefield opened its gym to the No. 9 Bridge City Lady Cardinals Wednesday in an act of good sportsmanship. Bridge City’s gym is currently occupied by FEMA and is packed full of sleeping bags. “I cannot thank Phillip Welch, Kristin Holbrooks and Chris Jost enough,†Bridge City Coach Becca Mathews said. “Whatever we would give them in return would not be enough. I was willing to go to Michigan to practice. Orangefield is truly the best neighbor in the world.†The idea of sharing the gym, Orangefield practiced early in the day on Wednesday, came when Holbrooks, the head coach at Orangefield, was on the phone with Mathews. “I talked to Becca when our team started to help out in Bridge City,†Holbrooks said. “I wanted to check on her and her kids. I told her they could have whatever they needed. If it was not even legal, it did not matter at that time. Mr. Welch (Orangefield superintendent) has been so generous during this time. It is going to be rewarding down the road.†So on Wednesday the Lady Cardinals stepped back on the court, this time with orange and white in the background instead of the normal red and white. “Sarah Armand said she has never missed practice and conditioning so much in her life,†Mathews said. “We were so estatic and it was great just to see all of them and to see their reactions to everything that has gone on. They truly did have a blast and they were thanking me for letting them practice.†Holbrooks said her team was more mature than she was at their ages. “When I was at LC-M, if PN-G had practiced on our court I’m sure I would have thrown a fit,†Holbrooks added. “I know a lot of our girls and the Bridge City girls are friends away from volleyball. It shows how mature both teams really are.†Rust was the only problem Mathews saw in the Lady Cardinals first practice and it had nothing to do with Hurricane Ike flood waters. “I knew I had to be sensitive because none of them have had the time to do anything with conditioning,†Mathews said. “They were a bit tired after the first 15 minutes. I did tell them though our opponents will not wait for us to catch up.†Holbrooks may be lending a hand to a District 21-3A rival get better yet that does not bother her or her team one bit. “When we play teams in our district, we would rather play them on their best day,†Holbrooks said. “It will make us and our entire district that much better.†The Lady Cardinals return to action this Friday when they hit the road to face Hardin at Devers High School. Holbrooks hopes to know sometime Thursday when the Lady Bobcats hit the court for the first time since the hurricane.
  3. Body of Ike Drowning Victim Found in Chambers County ANAHUAC, Texas - Chambers County Sheriff Joe LaRive Wednesday began the sixth day of what he says will be a multi-day search of debris fields left by Hurricane Ike across the southern portion of the county. His Department has been working in conjunction with Texas Parks and Wildlife, Port Arthur Police K-9 Units, US Fish and Wildlife and handlers from the all-volunteer Greater Houston Search Dogs. The search Sunday and Monday, conducted with dogs trained to find human remains, did not uncover any storm victims. However, Tuesday afternoon, members of the US Fish and Wildlife Department discovered the body of a white female, located in a debris field east of FM 562, between Lone Oak Bayou and Lake Surprise, north of the Moody Wildlife Refuge in Southern Chambers County. The victim, clad only in a bra, is described as a white female in her late 40's to early 50's, 5'6", medium build, with short brown hair and blonde to grey hi-lites. Preliminary autopsy results from the Jefferson County Medical Examiner's Office showed that the female showed signs of dental work, including fillings and caps. She also had a scar from a hysterectomy. It appears that the cause of death was due to drowning, as there were no broken bones or head trauma. Last Thursday, Officials conducted air searches for possible victims and plotted debris fields. Friday, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department game wardens marked 44 major debris piles, and game wardens, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service refuge officers and Sheriff's Deputies accompanied handlers from the all-volunteer Greater Houston Search Dogs and K-9 units from the Port Arthur Police Department began ground searches. "At this time it is very difficult to know just how many people really are missing from the Bolivar Peninsula after the storm, or if there are remains in these debris fields, but if there are, then we want to make sure we find them," said LaRive. "We do know that much of what was at Gilchrist and Crystal Beach before the storm is now five or six miles inland in Chambers County." Sheriff LaRive also reported that there was one storm-related fatality in Chambers County in the days before the storm. Anahuac resident, 52 year old Gary Schweinle was electrocuted on September 12, 2008 as he attempted to secure his roof before Hurricane Ike struck. Since Friday, searchers have fought through high water, knee-deep mud, alligators, snakes and swarms of mosquitoes to comb through piles of nail-studded lumber, appliances, household goods and trash washed ashore by the hurricane. Overturned boats nestled in trees and waterlogged mattresses dotted the landscape. Staircases and entire walls and sections of roofs also were lodged against trees on remote ranches and refuge land. LaRive said the search will continue until all of the marked debris fields have been searched with the aid of the dogs, a process he said could ultimately take weeks.
  4. Buccaneers kicker Bryant's infant son passes away By Pat Yasinskas ESPN.com TAMPA, Fla. -- The infant son of Tampa Bay Buccaneers kicker Matt Bryant died Wednesday morning, coach Jon Gruden said. Matthew Tryson Bryant apparently died in his sleep, Gruden said. The coach said he did not know any further details. The child was born June 16. "We're shocked and very saddened by this," Gruden said. Gruden said he was unsure if Bryant will play in Sunday's game against Green Bay, and that the situation would be addressed later in the week. "The entire Buccaneer family is deeply saddened by this tragedy. The Bryants have been an inspiration to our entire community through their commitment to their family and their exhaustive efforts working with children and those in need in the Bay area," Buccaneers general manager Bruce Allen said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Matt and Melissa during this difficult time.'' Pat Yasinskas covers the NFC South for ESPN.com.
  5. Mustangs look to regain momentum Van Wade The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — They had all the momentum of the world going their direction before Hurricane Ike came to town. The West Orange-Stark Mustangs found themselves ranked No. 7 in the latest Class 3A state poll and were coming off two impressive blowout victories over Class 4A units Nederland and Little Cypress-Mauriceville to start the season. School officially cranked up for the Mustangs Wednesday but many of them or still feeling devastation. Eight Mustangs lost their homes in the ordeal, including senior quarterback Ortavious Hypolite. “Our apartment was totally flooded,†said Hypolite. “I was able to get some clothes out and a little bit of furniture but everything else was pretty much gone. I’ve got a tough family though and we’re going to fight through it.†The Mustangs held their first practice Wednesday since Sept. 10. “We have some kids fired up and ready to go,†said long-time Mustang head coach Dan Hooks, who had plenty of water damage in his home as well in the Bridge City area. “We have several kids that lost a lot of their possessions and everyone is doing the best they can to make sure they’re being treated well and have the basic things that you need.†The Mustangs will have one final non-district game before District 21-3A cranks up Oct. 10 when they play host to the Silsbee Tigers. WO-S will welcome the Brookshire-Royal Falcons to Dan Hooks Stadium Friday, Sept. 3. “We got a chance to see Brookshire-Royal play Sealy last week and they held their own pretty good against a good Sealy team,†said Hooks. “They have nice speed and should be a good game for us before district. God only knows, we need it.†The Mustang coaching staff is slowly getting the Mustangs adjusted to their practice schedule. About 85 percent of all varsity athletes were back in school Wednesday. “The next three or four days, we’ll go at it a little bit slow so everyone can get their feet wet again,†Hooks said. “By next Monday, we’ll be back to a ful-board workout.†When Hurricane Rita blitzed through Orange in 2005, the Mustangs adjusted well. They rolled through 21-3A undefeated and advanced all the way to the Class 3A Division I state semifinals. “That was a special season,†Hooks said. “We really went through a lot of turmoil during that period too and the kids really banded together and went far in the playoffs. It sure would be nice to duplicate that again.†Hypolite feels the Mustangs will be ready to turn things up a notch real fast. “Sure, we lost some momentum after getting those two big wins to start the year,†said Hypolite. “It’ll be business as usual as soon as we get our conditioning back. By next week, I’m sure a lot of us will start having pent-up frustration because we haven’t played in so long. As long as we don’t take it too far and take it out each other, we’ll be fine. We’ll be ready for Brookshire-Royal and we can’t wait for district to start, we’re ready to defend our title again.†The Mustangs have won four straight 21-3A crowns and own a 24-game district winning streak.

  11. Man Desperately Seeking Brother Who Made Final Call to Wife During Hurricane Comments 1 | Recommend 4 September 23, 2008 - 7:59PM Scott Lawrence A Nederland man is searching for his brother, who was trapped by rising water and made a frantic 9-1-1 call when Hurricane Ike had reached its peak intensity. Greg Walker, 41, was returning home to Port Neches on Friday, September 12 after taking his wife and children to Louisiana to get away from the approaching hurricane. Rising water trapped Greg in his truck about one mile north of Bridge City. He called 9-1-1 at about 2:30 in the morning on Saturday, September 13. An emergency operator gave him lifesaving information, including an explanation of how to use cushions from his truck to float. The operator told Greg to call his wife. He called her but the line went dead during the conversation. "He was my bubba," said Kevin Walker, Greg's brother. "He loved to hunt and fish. He loved his kids and all the family. You know, that was the last thing that he did. 9-1-1 got him to hang up and call his wife back, and that's when they lost contact." Searchers found the truck last Tuesday - but no sign of Greg. The windows had been broken out, giving his family some hope Greg might have been able to escape and was later taken to a hospital or evacuation center. Law enforcement officers confirm they're looking for Walker and focusing on the area where he was last seen near Bridge City. Greg is married with three children.

  15. Clemens upset by Yankee snub Clemens 'heartbroken' by snub As Yankee hero after Yankee hero jogged out onto the field Sunday night prior to the final game at Yankee Stadium to cheers of a capacity crowd, Roger Clemens sat at home in hurricane-ravaged Texas, in front of a battery-operated television on his living room couch, "heartbroken" according to a family member. According to the New York Daily News, the Yankees did not invite Clemens to the festivities for fears that boos would spoil the enthusiasm of a memorable night. Clemens is one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history, but he is also the target of a federal perjury investigation, and the Yankee brass made no mention of him during Sunday's celebration because they did not know how fans would respond. "They didn't want boos to be the last memory of Roger at the Stadium," a source familiar with preparations for the last game told the Daily News. According to the New York Post, Clemens watched the ceremonies clutching wife Debbie's hand on one side and mother-in-law Jan Wild's on the other. Clemens tuned in to his final team's last home game hoping for some recognition for helping win two World Series titles, Wild said. When the team played the video celebrating its greatest players at every position, the steroid-scandal-scarred Clemens was nowhere to be seen. "Debbie and I held his hand while we watched the game, and he was heartbroken," said Wild, 70. "Not mad. He still loves baseball and the Yankees, but it was sad what they did to him." Even Chuck Knoblauch — who was also named in the scathing Mitchell Report on steroids — was acknowledged on the big screen, hailed as the second baseman of the 1990s. Fellow steroid targets Andy Pettitte and Jason Giambi were at the Stadium in uniform for the Yankees. Those players, however, have admitted and apologized for using performance-enhancing drugs. Clemens has maintained his innocence since he was identified as a steroid user in the Mitchell Report last December. In January, he filed a defamation lawsuit against Brian McNamee, the trainer who said he injected the Rocket with steroids and human growth hormone. But the past nine months have been a public relations disaster for the pitcher. The Daily News reported earlier this year that Clemens, a married man with four sons, had a long-term affair with country singer Mindy McCready and romantic relationships with other women. The News also reported that McNamee had injected Clemens' wife Debbie with HGH.
