Ike could do much worse for HS football scene Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader While Hurricane Gustav came through with barely a whimper, it still had local athletic directors worried last week. Most of high school football games were moved to Saturday while some still played on Friday, including Vidor who ran all over Houston St. Thomas. So Saturday was a busy day for everyone involved with football games. Now everyone has a close eye on Hurricane Ike. I’ve had that feeling with Ike, the same one I had with Hurricane Rita a few short years ago. I never wish a hurricane on anyone but I still would rather watch Ike go somewhere else than Southeast Texas. As of Monday evening Ike was forecast to make landfall somewhere on the Texas coast early Saturday morning. If it stays on that path you can expect evacuations to be called for in the middle of the week. So what are teams to do? A few games have already been moved up to this Thursday. Nederland has moved its game to Thursday and so has Newton. If evacuations are called for say on Wednesday or Thursday, what good is moving a game to Thursday night? The storm seems to be moving a little more south over the last few hours Monday evening so hopefully the smart move will be to once again have games once again on Saturday. Don’t you just love hurricane season in Southeast Texas? Let’s just hope our area once again dodges another bullet this year while also keeping our thoughts and prayers sent to those who are affected by the storm. We are not out of the woods yet with Ike and so while we are all resting and relaxing, remember there are a ton of AD’s whose minds are wandering on what will happen this week with the storm.
