Death of player prompts WO-S to cancel next football game Comments 0 September 19, 2010 3:29 PM Lindsey Kovacevich & Scott Lawrence ORANGE - Head coach Dan Hooks and his staff comforted players in the football locker room Sunday at West Orange-Stark High School, while the team planned to cancel its next game because of the sudden death of star quarterback Reggie Garrett. Garrett died Friday night at a Baptist Orange Hospital after collapsing on the sideline, shortly after throwing a touchdown pass in the 2nd quarter of the Jasper vs. West Orange-Stark game. Doctors have ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death. WO-S was scheduled to play Giddings in Conroe on Saturday, September 25. The next game following that is at home against Kirbyville on Saturday, October 2. KFDM is scheduled to televise the game on the CW channel as well as kfdm.com. The coaching staff met Sunday to talk about the death of Reggie Garrett and how it might affect the season. Players weren't expected to attend, but while KFDM was there, a number of athletes showed up. The letters R.I.P. were written on a large chalkboard in the locker room. On another part of the chackboard: from now on it's for you Reg! 112%. Two bottles of Snapple were in front of a locker. Offensive coordinator Toby Foreman told KFDM News that Reggie loved Snapple, and Foreman would often bet Reggie and pay off with Snapple. Coach Hooks spoke to the players, offering them words of support, patting them on the head, and telling them they'll be okay. He reminded them to be in school Monday and do their best. He said it's what Reggie Garrett, the star athlete and student, would have wanted. KFDM's Lindsey Kovacevich will have more on the story on the late news Sunday night.
