Tough Lady Lions sweep the Lady Bears Van Wade The Orange Leader The Orange Leader Tue Sep 07, 2010, 08:41 PM CDT LITTLE CYPRESS — Going into the 2010 volleyball campaign, long-time Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bear coach Vicki Castino felt that the Livingston Lady Lions were the early favorites to win the district title. Well, Tuesday night at The Bear Cave, the Lady Lions proved that they are going to be some “tough cookies†to crack as they downed the two-time defending 20-4A champion Lady Bears in three games, 25-19, 26-24, 25-17. The Lady Lions, who returned eight of their top 12 players this year, used their athleticism to perfection throughout the match and they spread the wealth around. The Lady Lions opened Game One with a 7-1 surge and held off a late LC-M rally to take the game by six. The Lady Bears jumped out to a 17-13 edge in Game Two but the Lady Lions responded with six straight points to go up 19-17. Livingston led 24-21 at one point but the Lady Bears retaliated with three straight points with Kellie Tilley posting two aces to tie it at 24-24. However, Lady Lion hitter Kylie Howard, who finished with a match-high 10 kills, finished off the game with a massive kill. Livingston controlled Game Three throughout and stretched a 10-7 lead to 21-12 and they finally were able to tame the frustrated Lady Bears. The Lady Lions finished with 37 kills while LC-M posted 21. Joining Howard in the very balanced Lady Lion arsenal included McKenzie Criddle, Morgan Lantrip and Cara Leslie. Criddle finished with nine kills. Lantrip had eight kills, eight points and an ace and Leslie was fierce in two ways, posting six kills to go along with a whopping 14 service points along with five aces. Mallarie Hearn led the Lady Bear front with seven kills and had three points and an ace. Megan Kemp had five kills while Allison Walker and Michelle Rigsby had three kills apiece. Walker and Rigsby also both tallied six points and an ace apiece. Tilley finished with four points and three aces and Kalyn Harkness had three points and an ace. The Lady Bears will look to regroup this week when they visit Orangefield in non-district play and they will also compete in the YMBL Tournament in Beaumont. LC-M will return to 20-4A action Tuesday when they travel to Beaumont Central. In other non-district action Tuesday night, the Deweyville Lady Pirates hammered out a 25-5, 25-9, 25-14 decision over Sabine Pass at Pirate Gym. The Lady Pirates (7-6-3) return to action Thursday and Saturday at the YMBL Tournament and will start 23-2A play Friday in Winnie against East Chambers.

Long-time coach, friend Tennison passes away
KFDM COOP posted a topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Long-time coach, friend Tennison passes away Van Wade The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — A man that improved the lives of thousands of students at Orangefield High School for 24 years lost his life after a courageous battle against cancer Friday night at his home. William “Bill†Tennison, 76, will always simply be remembered as “Coach†to many Orangefield residents. Tennison was also extremely thought of by coaches and players across Southeast Texas as he led the Lady Bobcats to numerous playoff appearances and was also a top-notch track coach along with several sports at the school. Tennison spent 24 of his 40 years in the teaching and coaching profession in the Orangefield School District. While he was leading the Lady Bobcats to all of those winning campaigns, he was also responsible for organizing the Fellowship of Christian Athletes along with the Little Dribblers program. Tennison was always about the kids he taught and coached at the school. No matter how successful the Lady Bobcats were on any night, Tennison was always the first coach to call in scores and reports on how well his girls did. He always said “No matter how good or bad we played, we always have some kids that played well and they deserve the recognition.†Tennison was also an avid Texas A&M University fan that was never afraid to pick on a certain Orange Leader sports editor, who likes the Texas Longhorns. But that sports editor treasured Coach Tennison and his entire family as he and Darlene’s children have all become successful in life, another item that Coach Tennison was always proud to discuss. His off the court accolades will be remembered as well. He was a member of the Gideons International since 1972 and was a former chairman of the local Republican Party. Tennison was also a deacon and member of Calvary Baptist Church. Funeral services are tentatively set for 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 7, 2010, at the Orangefield High School Gymnasium. Officiating will be Reverend David Milner, Reverend Bobby Spross, and speaker Robert Thomas. Burial will follow at Autumn Oaks in Orange, Texas. Visitation will be from 5:00-9:00 p.m., Monday at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange. Born in Anton, Texas on March 13, 1934, Bill was the son of Lillie Mae (Keen) and Willie Hobson Tennison. Tennison is survived by his wife of 55 Years, Darlene B. Tennison; son and daughter-in-law, John and Gaye Tennison of North Carolina; daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Cecil "Sparky" Sparks of Orange; son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Melissa Tennison of Spring; daughter, Michelle Tennison of Alexandria, Virginia; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Tiffany Tennison of Euless; and 12 grandchildren, John David, Mark Andrew, Paul Joseph Tennison, Kristen Sparks, Brandon Sparks, Casey Sparks, Mitchell Tennison, Cassie Tennison, Abby Tennison, Will Tennison, Micah Tennison, and Sevyn Tennison. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Gideons International, P.O. Box 140800, Nashville, Tennessee, 37214. -

Bridge City, Menard thump Vidor Gabriel Pruett CNHI BRIDGE CITY — BRIDGE CITY — Bridge City coach Cris Stump told a lot of reporters and fans this offseason Matt Menard would do fine as the new quarterback of the Cardinals. Menard keeps on making Stump look like a smart man. Menard and the Cardinals dismantled the visiting Vidor Pirates Friday 31-13 at Larry B. Ward Stadium. “He is pretty good,†Stump said of Menard. “Nobody was believing me when I said he can do it and now he is making me look pretty smart.†Menard rushed for 130 yards and a touchdown and was 8-for-15 passing for 134 yards with a 31-touchdown strike to Cameron Dishon. “That’s a big win,†Menard said. “ It has been a long time since we were 2-0. It feels great to bring Bridge City back the way it used to be and how it should be.†The Cardinals got off to a quick start Friday with two touchdowns before the end of the first quarter. The first touchdown did not take long as Menard ran the opening kickoff back 49 yards down to the Pirates’ 41-yard line. Four plays later Hunter Clark found the endzone from 25 yards out and Devin Bertrand made it 7-0 with a PAT. Bridge City struck again on its next possession for a second touchdown. Dishon hauled in a 31-yard touchdown reception from Menard. Dishon was untouched down the middle of the field until he dove for the endzone. Bertrand’s kick made it 14-0. Dishon had five catches for 105 yards in the game. “Cameron makes it pretty easy to be a quarterback,†Menard said. “What makes it even easier is our offensive line. Those guys give me great protection. I never feel hurried in the game.†Vidor’s rushing style proved to be effective all night, yet it meant the clock continued to roll in the second half as Bridge City led 17-7 at the break. Menard scored the Cardinals’ first touchdown of the second half, this time as a running back. Colby Carpenter was under center with Menard behind him as a running back. Menard was too tough to bring down and scored from a yard out. Bertrand made it 24-7. Vidor started its next drive with 6:14 left in the third and did not score until 11:20 remained in the game. The drive was 15 plays and ended with Brentyn Clark scoring from five yards out. Jacob Jeanise kicked the PAT to make it 24-14. Josh Ozio all locked up the game for Bridge City with a 48-yard interception return with 59 seconds left on the clock. Clark had scored the Pirates’ first touchdown. It came in the second quarter and was a 10-yard run. Clark led the Pirates with 94 yards rushing. Even though Vidor rushed for 294 yards, the Cardinals defense was flying around the field and hitting harder than any Bridge City team seen in the last four years. “Our defense is hitting people and the best part is they are young,†Menard said. “They are young and now they will keep building on this win. I am glad I’m on their side because I don’t want to go up against those guys.†David Smallwood also found rushing success against Bridge City with 12 carries for 79 yards. The Cardinals travel to face Beaumont Kelly next week while the Pirates are on the road at Kirbyville. The Wildcats defeated the Newton Eagles, 41-6 Friday night. -
