In the past, Bay City has been a powerhouse in 4A - going to state more than once in the stretch we've been playing them. It's always a fun game and you can "throw the records out the window." I would like to see us play PN-G again, since it's been quite a while and those games were almost ALWAYS close, but I do look forward to the Bay City game pretty much every year. Remember 2000? Our only loss was in the state game, and their only loss of the season was to us in the Dome (they won D1 state). Remember 2002? It was a 53-35 shootout, also in the Astrodome. In 2003, we won 14-7. In 2005, we won by one point (35-34) by shutting them out of the end zone on a two-point conversion attempt AFTER they accepted a defensive penalty during a successful PAT. Last year, when we won 20-12, the game was a little lackluster. But the great games far outweight the dull ones.

Yup! Those are your two contenders for district champ! WOS87 had mentioned it in another post, but the cool thing is that over the last decade, with the exception of one year, WO-S has either won the 4A district title or beat the eventual district champ. Our one year that doesn't fit the mold was when we lost to district champs Ozen by one point, when we couldn't call a QB sneak from the one yard line with a 6-5 QB (on three successive plays). 1997: District champs 1998: District champs 1999: Beat PN-G (district champs and state finalists) 2000: District champs 2001: Beat PA Lincoln (district champs) 2002: Lost to champs Ozen by 1. I'd love to play PN-G again. Always a fun game!

BH fans expect a tough season. I don't think they'll be disappointed regardless how bad it is.

In 2000, Bay City lost to WO-S and went on to finish the season 15-1.

Well, folks, it's getting a little spooky. Every year since we left the 4A district, the team who has WON the district (or shared the title) has lost to WO-S in a pre-district game: 2004: Nederland shared the title 2005: Central won district 2006: Dayton won district So come in, be humbled, and steamroll your way to the playoffs.

WO-S will be less experienced this year, but just as talented as in years past. Speaking of beating bigger teams: since dropping to 3A three years ago, our record against local 4A teams is 8-1. Our lone loss was against Bay City. All three years, we beat the team that eventually won or shared the local 4A district title (Ned in 04, Central in 05, Dayton in 06).

That's a sweet streak that could be 10-for-10 if our OC knew how to sneak it in from the one with a 6-5 QB on three tries. Still, it's impressive (though I'm biased ).

Given your track record on predictions, I feel pretty good. ;D But, the more East of the Trinity football you watch, the more you'll learn.

OOPS! I mistyped "3A" instead of "4A." I wasn't arguing with you, but rather supporting your point. You left out 1998 (we were 10-0, so definitely champs) and 1979, which was before we were ever 5A. We shared first place with Jasper in 86 (then won state). If you add those three in, we had 12 in 4A, one in 5A and three in 3A.

The WO-S lines were dominated? BH only crossed the 50 once all night after being spotted the ball on the 50. As I've said, Garrett isn't a speedster, but doesn't need to be. He's been a solid starter for two years already and should have a monster year. WO-S's QB has improved since practices started, and I expect the growth to continue.

I saw it: they got dominated. Yeah, he's still got a little of that Mont Belvieu in him.

Your comments didn't bother me. I thought you assumed we had a new RB. Beasley was QB. You're way too defensive. I'm not upset about what you said. You're right - Garrett is far from the fastest RB in the world - or even the district (probably even the team). We still have quite a bit of speed, but Garrett has always been more of a break-tackle/dodge-tackle back, though he'll break off a few 50-plus runs each year.

Hmmm... Which runningbacks from the past are you referring to? I guess that's my question. I figured you were referring to our backs since we dropped to 3A, which has been the same guy we have this year. Good for your DB, though. He obviously didn't give up and made the play. That should help extend some of BH's opponents' drives to three and four plays instead of just one

Ya said that last year ;D I'm far from angry. You're the one spouting words like "crap" and "arse." I'm perfectly happy. I just thought it was funny that that was what you consider "holding their own."

I hope every team we play "holds their own" like BH did last night.

As has already been noted, that was a JV tailback. I was simply pointing out that if you're comparing him to our running backs over the last few years, he IS our running back from the past few years. Garrett isn't a speedster - never has been - but he's elusive and strong, and should have an outstanding year. Our fast players over the last two years were our QB (Beasley) and wideouts (Earl Thomas, Jacoby Franks). Besides, any time someone gets "run down from behind," I'll take it. That means he pretty much busted for a breakaway run through the entire defense designed to stop him. I guess it's a "moral victory" for the defense, though.

Kendell Cleveland was a great back who became part of one of the NCAA's best one-two punches with Kevin Faulk at LSU. He was headed for the NFL most likely, but a chronic leg injury hurt his playing time and draft status. I think he went into camp with the Bills, but ended up leaving or being cut. He was a great RB coach at WO-S for a few years and has since moved on. Here's a story from before his injury: [Hidden Content]

We're rivals because we dislike each other, not because it's usually a dogfight. I think there are two different kinds of rivalries. Although our record against Jasper is overwhelmingly in our favor, it's usually a hard-fought and back-and-forth game with high stakes - making it a true rivalry. In most years, the LC-M game has been an easy win, with our last loss coming 13 years ago and the previous loss 24 years ago. But there is resentment there, plus being across town from one another. So, in a way, it is a rivalry.
