  1. PA should be favored, but this PNG team has the potential to be nasty. Strong, disciplined, and big. PA is stacked. Setting aside the fact I’m rooting for PNG, PA should win in a toss up. In a tight game, I’d expect PA to have a few more chances at the end zone. All that being said, if PA gives us any windows, PNG has the team to bust through them.

I’m a loyal PNG fan, but I think PA will take this one. We have a lot of young kids and the speed of PA maybe too much for week 1.

    I’m thinking 28-21 or 21-14 if it’s a lower scoring game.

  3. I think PNG ended up with three touchdowns and a field goal. LCM, two touchdowns. Both teams looked pretty sharp, with advantage to png on both sides of the ball. Png defensive and offensive lines are huge, physical, and look game-ready. LCM largely didn’t move the ball against PNG’s 1s, but their passing and run game opened up in the second half. Both teams’ qbs looked good. LCM has some good size, well-coached, and they have a couple fast running backs. LCM defense isn’t as good as their offense, but they overall look pretty good. Png looks like a mostly well-oiled machine, but there were a few mistakes like dropped passes, and a couple missed tackles. PNG’s qb 2 had a couple of really nice passes completed in the second half. Png qbs threw a couple ints.

Did not say anyone was going to "disappear". However, the only limiting factor on Dayton this year is that FBM and PNG have more talent to the point where it will be difficult for Dayton to overcome. The talent level at Dayton will jump next year and the gap between the others will be gone. With Ware's system in place and equal (to more) talent, Dayton will be the favorite (my call). You may very well need to see more but I have seen enough to feel confident in my prediction.

I would argue PNG doesn’t have more talent. PNG has a really good coach. Roughly the same group that got blown out in the 3rd round in 2021 went to State in 2022. The only thing that changed was a better coaching approach.

Dayton will not "fade" as long as Coach Ware is HFC. They may have some years where they do not win the district but they will not "fade". However, after this year they will likely be competing for District Championship and be favorites for at least a 3 year run.

How will they be favorites? Is Fort Bend Marshall going to disappear (without even getting into the other teams in the district)? I can see an argument they’ll be in the mix. But I see no basis for calling them favorites, until we see more. How about they win a first round playoff game ?

Nederland has been 0-3 plenty of times going into district and come out upper tier at the end of it. They will be battle tested come district play.

I agree with that approach. I don’t care if my team goes 0-3 through preseason as long as it’s making them better.

  7. What does a good season for Nederland look like this year? Setting aside the obvious “10 wins and a deep playoff run.” Given what last year was and what’s coming back, what looks good? I think six wins and making the playoffs would be a strong argument they’re improving. I don’t know if I see an easy path to 6. Of course, throw in a win against PNG and people would feel pretty good about things, I think. Who does Nederland play for pre-season?

I believe what hurt LH more than not having their 2 stud rb’s was what they lost to graduation on the defensive side of the ball from the previous year. LH was a top scoring team last year but their defense gave up A LOT OF YARDS AND SCORES. Their offense had to put up a lot points because the defense couldn’t stop nobody.

If they put together a decent defense this year In conjunction with the offense they are going to put on the field this year they’ll make another deep playoff run.

Their defense definitely was their biggest weakness. Terrible tackling.

  9. I’ll be very sad to see him go. Few people dedicate themselves so well to something for so long, and make it their own. You can tell he loves the local athletes, and he is easily the biggest name in sports journalism in SETX. It will be weird not having him doing the coverage. Best of luck to Ashly!

Understood, except you have no way to make your allegation other than simply sharing your opinion. LH coaches have been getting it done for many years (which is why they are currently ranked higher than PNG). No one is "out coaching" LH. I am assuming that you believe PNG was "outcoached" by SOC and PAM?

Looking forward to PNG replicating their results from last year as LH has been doing for two decades.

Png WAS outcoached by SOC and PAM

OK, here we go again. LH is the "first team that would not do better with their best two players". Because defenses "do not play teams differently who do not have their best two offensive players".

If you dont think LH minus their two best weapons, had anything to "where to run", you are not engaging in serious discussion.

I didn’t say they wouldn’t have been better. It makes a difference to lose your two best running backs. I’m saying that runningback play wouldn’t have won them that game. It’s not like they had Bijan Robinson on the sidelines.

No is disputing that PNG could stop LH without LH two best players in one game last year. PNG nowhere to be found in any year prior. Maybe they can replicate it again this year and take a shot at LH at full strength (like when LH curb stomped superior teams that previously curb stomped PNG).

Png won by beating the LH offensive and defensive lines. It wouldn’t have mattered if those two starters had been healthy. They wouldn’t have had anywhere to run.

You did not have similar talent to png last year...the fact that they had a good chance to win that game at the end, could it possibly have anythng to do with coaching?  If you are going to look at things, look at them in their entirety.

I don’t think it’s controversial at this point in time to say that PNG was the better team against Nederland last year - more talent, better-coached, more bought-in to the system, you name it. Yet, when we actually had to play (even taking into account the weather conditions), Nederland took us to the brink. You have to credit the coaching and the kids. Even with whatever the supposed problems are at Nederland right now, the coaches should get some credit for how Nederland stood up in a down season against the best version of PNG they’ve seen in a long time. On the other hand, the interception that allowed us to get the game winner was an inexcusably bad throw and a bad play call. That’s coaching too. So, yeah, Nederland had problems last year. But they had bright spots too. They’ll be better this year.

PN-G has been blessed to have a good run of talented kids with size. The OLs and DLs over the past couple of years and continuing in 2023 have had kids with size and mobility. Mix-in some really good kids at QB, RB, WR, lots of high energy kids on defense that were great at tackling, and add-in the great coaching and conditioning and you will win a lot of games.  I have no idea what they are feeding kids in Port Neches or Groves, but the Indians have had the size to control the LOS. It's good times at PN-G.  Enjoy it and be thankful.  The good times and bad times can be cyclical in HS football. I agree with some of the other PN-G fans.  Anxious to see how our Indians will replace #2, 3, 6, 10, 11, 16, 18, 44, 45, 48, 64, 65, 68, 72...lots of really good kids on the 2022 team. In the playoffs, I'm not sure any team had better LBs that PN-G (3, 6, and 16)...tackling like their hair was on fire. Go Indians.

I think we had the best d-line and linebackers (as a unit) in the state. Nick Gardner had an incredible performance in the state game, and throughout the playoffs.

How does the excitement and/or expectations compare to last year at this time?

I’m excited. It’s sort of a “prove it” year in some ways. Was last year just a combination of great players, good coaching, and luck, or is there a proven, winning system being installed at PNG? I think we have an excellent coach, and it seems to me that the conditioning and mentality is better than it’s been in at least 30 years.
