  1. Thanks - I thought it was West Orange that made it, not Nederland.
  2. (1) UIL collects revenue from playoff games. More games = $$ (2) I like four teams in, and more teams solves a couple problems while not depriving the playoffs of what makes playoffs great. In the old days, teams were often punished for being in good districts. In 1999, state-ranked Nederland team sat at home because West Orange and PNG beat them. Both West Orange and PnG made good playoff runs, and it’s reasonable to expect Nederland would have as well. Far weaker teams than Nederland across the state made the playoffs because they were in weaker districts. I see the dilutive effect of adding more teams, but only if “making the playoffs” is the prize I’m protecting. But, our goal isn’t to see who can make the playoffs. Our goal is to arrive at the best team in the state via a single-elimination tournament. More teams doesn’t hurt that, and there have been four seeds who made it really far (I want to say some have made it to state because I remember hearing that from Dave Campbell’s, but I don’t know for certain).
  3. Disregard, there’s already a thread on this below, I just missed it.
  4. I don’t see a thread for this one yet. This is likely going to be the most competitive first round game between two really good teams in 5aD2, Region 3. Randle’s offense vs FBM’s speed, size, and defense. Randle has only lost to undefeated Lake Creek. FBM averaged just over 10 points a game on defense. I have a hunch FBM has a little more in this game. I’ll take FBM by three.
  5. Any word on whether Shae Adams will play this week? If so, in what capacity? It seems a waste to have a perfectly capable qb already and put him on the sidelines, when you could have Shae all over the field terrifying defenses and defensive coordinators, with Bailey at QB.
  6. Texas City will roll in this one.
  7. His speed would be killer in the playoffs. Scary. Especially paired with Chatagnier’s bruiser-style running. In Mid County Madness, I almost found myself wanting him to get more big runs just because it’s cool to watch that level of speed and agility. But (and not to kick Nederland while they’re down) there was hardly any blocking for him. He was on his own, and the confusing part is some of the plays seemed designed to put him on his own. No Rb can overcome that.
  8. He’s already chewing up yards - But imagine him behind PNG’s o-line
  9. Someone ask Hubert what he thinks about the color purple.
  10. I think PnG will be ok. Brenham is soft on defense, and doesn’t have a lot on offense. Not to mention being pretty mistake-prone. I expect a comfortable 42-21 PNG win.
  11. I’m going with West Orange. They aren’t what they used to be, but they’re not pushovers either.
  12. Hoping for Nederland … The Bulldogs can do it.
  13. Just have to play the games now. Rankings are fun, but they’re rat poison. Last year, unranked PNG beat three top ten teams on the way to state. This year, I wish we weren’t ranked, as fun as it is to see statewide recognition of where the program is. The only thing that matters is the next play.
  14. Good work PNG! Undefeated outright district champs!
  15. Dang. I was thinking Nederland would come in on fire after last week.
  16. I hope not. I’d rather have FBM than Splendora and Lee.
  17. I’ve been watching some Brenham game film. Waiting to see how they do against Montgomery Lake Creek, but they’re not particularly scary. Maybe worse than last year, which isn’t to say they’re bad this year. Just not much of a punch. Not a lot of size, not particularly fast, prone to dumb mistakes, and not well-conditioned. I’d be 50/50 on who wins between Brenham and Nederland. Reminds me of Dayton - they do what they do well, but it’s not that hard to stop them from doing it, and they’re soft of defense. With a garbage time touchdown from them, I think we’re looking at a 42-21 PNG win. This isn’t to discount them - Brenham is a tradition-rich, consistently high-performing program, with strong fan support. They aren’t going to roll over. But, PNG’s defense is too good for Brenham and our offense is going to score. I will say a big advantage Brenham might have is they’ve been playing tough, competitive games, and they’ll go from Lake Creek (who will likely beat them) to us, while we’ve had few competitive minutes since Texas City, and will play a cupcake this week. The team that’s had to fight and scrape always has a competitive edge over a team that has been rolling over people. Png might get shocked if Brenham comes out and punches us in the mouth.
  18. Texas City might be a mirror of PNG last season. Their only loss was to a top-ten team (Last year, PNG’s only district loss was to top-ten FBM) and that loss has kept them out of top ten consideration and kept them in a dark horse status. But, they have very few weaknesses, and keep winning. I wouldn’t be surprised if we met them again in the postseason.
  19. I’m finding that out right now. I swore it was a bear.
  20. Super pumped for this game. I don’t know if we’ve ever hosted Brenham, but they have an awesome program with a great history, and their fans are some of the more pleasant I’ve ever interacted with. Also, I’m a little worried: I have an itch at the back of my brain saying our district hasn’t been as competitive as it was last year. The other district seems more consistently solid, top to bottom. I feel good about our chances, but this isn’t going to be some easy walk to the 2nd round.
