Montgomery (31) @ Port Neches-Groves (37) - FINAL
Rez replied to jdawg03's topic in High School Football
Montgomery has a good offense. They depend a little too much on big plays. It’s either a home run or nothing for them. But, overall PNG did a good job last night. And the offense continues to move the ball despite our two best RBs nursing injuries from as far back as the Huntsville game. Not perfect, but who is? This is starting to feel like one of those seasons where we’re battle tested and struggling, but overall getting better. We’ve got a great head coach. It will come together. -
Huntsville beat both Montgomery and Nederland. And, if Ned loses to Montgomery, Ned will have lost to both Huntsville and Montgomery. I’d think that makes it easy. Huntsville, Montgomery, then Nederland. But, I’m not a rules expert. I just can’t see it making sense that we’d have to go to points when one team has beaten both of the other two and one team has lost to both of the other two. Still, the point will be moot if Nederland beats Montgomery.

Only one has said anything negative and they aren’t even from PNG. Don’t try to make it more than it is.

It’s insane. In week 10 the current 1st place could fall as far as 4th. -

Should have gone to us. It was clearly backwards. -
I wish we weren’t ranked. Now Ned can just focus on ball.

I hate those.

I’m not going to be specific about any player or position group so as to not run afoul of rules, but there is definitely a weak portion to our defense and other teams know it -

Ironically, we were more unpredictable when we ran it up the middle nearly every play last season. And our pass plays were a natural compliment to our run game. -

The defense doesn’t even have to make a read. We broadcast every pass and they’re all basically post routes -
Nederland matched up fine in the trenches, and they attacked our blocking lanes better than anyone all season. There were portions of the game where their D line made our o-line look silly, and I wish we had their Lb coach. I’m saying I don’t know that Montgomery can do what Nederland did.
-
I have more thoughts to add later, but for now I’ll say I don’t think Montgomery matches up with PNG in the trenches, but they might be better equipped to take advantage of our secondary than anyone we’ve played so far.

No need to apologize to anyone, but you’re a class act regardless. And, I agree there’s too much “in your face” in sports. It defeats the purpose of it, throws the whole thing off. I like the handshake after because it’s a least a symbolic reminder that opponents aren’t enemies. For some related history, I’ve always been inspired by the tribute the British showed the Red Baron after they finally killed him. He had shot down many of their comrades and had of course been a feared enemy, but since he was killed behind British lines they interred him with full military honors. There’s a picture of the allied soldiers standing reverently at his funeral that gives me chills. That’s the kind of attitude I’d like to see coaches instill in players. On that note, I watched Ayden Sunday rush across the field to console Conner Bailey after last Friday’s game. He’s carried Nederland for three years, and suffered through a couple bad seasons, and two MCM losses — That his first thought was of his opponent and not celebrating with his classmates says a lot. -

I guess I did. I’ll find it -
Huntsville qb is a wild card. He’s getting his first start. Extremely athletic. He might match Hubert in a foot race. Nederland can stop a run game, but his ability to tuck it and run won’t be something Ned can discount. Still, have to give a very slight edge to Nederland in this.

The students ran on the field. You saw it, everyone saw it - If I was the coach I would have told the png players to skip the handshakes. It’s safer. No need to pretend it’s anything but that. -

If we are the 1st and 4th seed, we’d meet in the 3rd round. If we’re the 2nd and 3rd we’d meet in the 3rd round. If one of us is 1st or 4th and the other is 2nd or 3rd we’d only meet in the 4th round. -
We’ll win game one. It’s likely against Mount Pleasant and they’re not good.

The offensive personnel is fine. The offensive play calling isn’t. We’re literally “throwing” drives away. The defense has some serious personnel problems (without getting specific as to individuals, there is definitely a weak side to our defense and Nederland knew that and had their success there). SOC will beat us by three scores. -
Is this the first time PNG and Nederland have been in the top 10 at the same time?
-
Both teams looked huge out there. Nederland is going to have a massive varsity o-line next season. My impression watching both JVs is that both varsities will be better overall next year. There are kids on the jv I think could be contributing already on varsity, and that’s not true every year.

DC still very much in play. Huntsville, PNG, Nederland, and Montgomery could still win it.
