  1. As much as I wanted PNG to get another crack at Huntsville, there is no doubt that FB Marshall was absolutely the better team. PNG loses that game 10 out of 10 times. But as PNG can't play in this game, FB Marshall and Hunstville is a matchup that I can't wait to see. I think Huntsville is the real deal, but it's going to be tough to contain FB Marshall. I don't know if Huntsville can score enough to keep up in a shootout. Rooting for Huntsville -- I want to see how far that team can go.

CardinalBacker ^^^^^^^^^ This is all that really care about in reality. Number of fans. LOL . Its a mental disorder.

We are talking about measuring fan enthusiasm for today's game. CardinalBacker tried to use a relatively quiet game thread as evidence that PNG fans don't care about the outcome of the game. I used what will likely be a huge PNG crowd tonight as evidence that PNG fans do, in fact, care about the outcome of the game. That isn't a mental disorder -- It is drawing conclusions based on observable realities.  To say that the fact that I mentioned fan attendance means that PNG fans are obsessed with numbers is to grossly distort what I said.

Boy.... PNG fan is awfully quiet for a team that's playing in the third round this week.

I guess what they say about is really true... "it doesn't matter if we win or lose.... championships don't matter... as long as we beat Nederland."

Go see PNG on Friday and count the fans on the PNG side vs the fans on the FB Marshall side, then come back and tell us we don't care about the game.

If I remember right LM had went 3 straight years to the finals, winning once during that time. My original post was in reference to how dominate LM was in the Houston area and nobody gave PNG a chance. PNG rolled into the dome and beat them behind Long and a stout D including the dome rocking hit of Gohlke (RIP). That hit took the soul of La Marque. That's the type of performance needed in this game. Don't see PNG winning a shootout. IMO, PNG will need to win time of possession and have long time consuming drives that end in points, and get some big stops on Defense and couple of turnovers.

Somebody needs to step up on the D and get that old school PNG defense swag back.

Anyone have a video of that hit? I keep hearing about it.

Same stuff was said in 1999 about La Marque. They had won numerous state championships. Y'all remember what happened?

That was a great day. We'd all love for history to repeat itself. The key there was PNG's punishing defense. Our defense has gotten better and better from week to week. If we can avoid any big mistakes and make sure open field tackles, we can keep ourselves in the game. We shot ourselves in the foot against College Station in 2016 with big mistakes, and College Station capitalized. FB Marshall will do the same.

  6. Nothing this season has happened how I expected it, and a lot of things that have been true in past seasons haven't happened this season. Usually PNG starts out seasons looking really good, then falls short against superior competition in later games. Usually PNG's defense struggles a lot. This season, we have peaked in the latter half of the season and the defense is better than normal. For all we know FB Marshall isn't much better than PNG. Our loss to Huntsville is looking better and better. We can hang with good teams. Just have to play solid defense and take advantage of any gaps in the FB Marshall defense to punish them for focusing on RJ. It won't be easy. FB Marshall is probably one of the best in the state. In any case, I'm hoping for a rematch against Huntsville in the 4th round.

  7. Against PNG, Nederland tried to keep the game low-scoring. My guess is the idea was to keep Roschon off the field by extending long clock-eating drives. This didn't work because Nederland gave up turnovers on two key drives that prevented them from matching PNG's points and taking up clock time. Even though Nederland's strategy against PNG didn't work, this doesn't mean it was the wrong strategy. Nederland, I think, should try to keep the score low and extend drives as long as they can -- That is, do what they intended to do against PNG. If Nederland can avoid costly turnovers and keep Marshall's offense off the field, while playing the same solid defense they've been putting on the field in almost every game this season, they have a chance.

If Marshall's district is as weak as some of us suspect, it is possible that they walk into the game against Nederland cocky and unfocused. One of the things Nederland does best is match teams for punch and aggressiveness, which could throw Marshall off. All that being said, Marshall's only losses are against two of the best pound-for-pound teams in Texas, so it isn't as if they are totally untested.

This team is a matchup nightmare for us on paper. They have a 6 foot 4 mobile QB, a 6 foot 5 receiver and a 6 foot 2 receiver. They  also have another WR who leads the team in yards, catches and TDs and a running back with very good stats. I think this will be the best team we’ve played by far this season. We will need a HUGE team effort. Let’s go Dogs!

Sounds like a matchup nightmare for just about every team in Texas. Good luck to the Dogs, they've certainly got their hands full.

Do you know what year that was? Those PNG uniforms first appeared in 2004 and stayed (I think) until 2008. Was that Hemmings as PNG QB taking the hit? My guess would be 2004 or 2005. I think PNG was at home in 2004 for that game.

How are they suppose to go to state when they have already dropped two games to teams in region 3,,not the same manvel team!!!!

Right, but region 3 is a buzzsaw. They lost to Crosby (who played the game of their lives to come back and win) and FB Marshall, which is ranked #1, by one point in overtime. They have obliterated everyone else they've played. Two early season losses don't mean they wouldn't beat FB Marshall or Crosby today (they would certainly beat Crosby, but a one-point win in overtime is hardly decisive, so they could beat FB Marshall as well).

Fort Bend Marshall is ranked 1. Not sure what you mean.

The other Marshall is ranked directly below Nederland, and by what I understand, they are very good. Marshall is ranked #10 in the 5A DII poll by Dave Campbell's Texas Football. Nederland is not in the top ten in that ranking. This isn't to say that Dave Campbell's is the only authority. Nederland will probably meet Marshall in the 2nd round, so here's hoping they actually are better than Marshall.
