You see this a lot in the recruiting at the college level.
When the spread became the norm in Texas, we stopped producing top quality defensive linemen at the same level as other states that haven't embraced it. If you look at a map of where the best defensive linemen in the country come from, the top producing states are all in SEC country, where we still play 'grown man football' from Pop Warner to the pros, followed by the B1G states. Texas produces some incredible quarterbacks and players at the skills positions, but we just don't shell out a lot of super talented players on the D-Line. We do put up a lot of talent in our secondaries (I can't be a good Alabama fan and forget the likes of Tony Brown and Deionte Thompson), but that's also a product of a state where pass-prolific offenses reign supreme.
Southeast Texas is a little bit of an exception to the rule with the likes of WO-S and Nederland. But Faircloth's not a product of the Golden Triangle football academy. He cut his teeth at places like Odessa Permian, where Mack Brown's spread offense is the law of the land.
For what it's worth, I'm hopeful Jimbo Fisher will change some of that. But if he does, it'll take a while.

Yeah, our offense can score with most teams. Nederland is a squad that can get you a few three and outs and hold the game close enough, and with Shug plus the receivers of the past 2-3 years, that is all we needed. We drop 40 points in playoff losses! 40 in a loss! If we could get teams off the field, alot of those games, especially against CS are different.

100% agree -- I hadn't ever thought of it, but let's just have a D as good as Nederland's. We have a really good offense. Our offense, year in and year out, can score on most teams in the state. Let's have a D like Nederland. This is one of the more insightful observations I've read on this site.

I think Crosby must have punted in their first series, because we scored first and they had the ball first. I'm not aware of PNG getting any interceptions or fumbles. Crosby's QB completed just about everything he let out of his hand. He is going to a ridiculously good QB, already is a really good QB. I think he is a sophomore, but I might be wrong. Our defense did enough to win (that is, slow them down a little bit), but we are going to have be much better. I think, in our defense (no pun intended), defenses across the state have gotten worse. Look at the Big 12, which is populated with hundreds of Texas players, and look at how bad the defenses have been over the last several years. Some of that is a function of how hard the spread is to cover for high school kids -- It requires a very technical, smart approach to defense. Some of that might be a function of where teams are choosing to put their best personnel. In any case, teams with good defenses are rare. Very rare. West Orange is the only team I can think of off the top of my head with a consistently good defense. PAM usually has a solid defense. Everyone else has a vulnerable defense. I don't know how to fix it, and I certainly wouldn't know how to coach it.

I would take a Nederland level D.  Doesn't have to be Pam or WOS level.  At the very least Ned can tackle, cause turnovers and scrap. We have hours upon hours of examples of what works from playing them. Similar athletes from a school with similar demographics. No way I wouldn't have taken a few concepts by now and made them my own.

Just in case you missed it .
WOS officially became the all time winningest High School Football program in the state of Texas in any classification. 80% + winning ratio.

Dayton knocked us out in 2011 and in 2014. We finally beat them in 2015, by one point.

We talked a lot this year about PN-G's 72-69 win over Crosby in the playoffs last year. Seems it wasn't that long ago that PN-G beat Dayton 42-41, or something like that, in the first round of the playoffs. As I recall, somebody went back and looked it up. That was the Indians' first win over the Broncos since 1947.
Lots of history between these two. It was my freshman year of high school, 2007, when PN-G beat Lumberton, who beat Dayton, who beat PN-G, splitting the district championship three ways. I seem to recall PN-G losing to Dayton in the first round of the playoffs around 2014 or so (at Lamar, maybe). I wasn't there, but I've heard stories about PN-G's first round loss to Dayton in 1998 with Dustin Long at quarterback. Everyone remembers Mr. Long's playoff run the following year.
Given Dayton's history, it's unfortunate to see how they're doing in the post-Stewart era. Still don't want to count them out, though. Never know what a game against the Broncos is going to look like. I'll call it for the Indians, but not by more than two possessions.

Nothing but respect for Dayton. They knocked us out the playoffs in 2011 and 2014. I don't know what the series record is, but Dayton is scary, no matter what season it is and no matter what their record shows. PNG wins in a tough game against a team with nothing to lose. Let's hope both teams escape injury free.

This was my comment last Friday on the pre-game thread:
"PNG can't count on the same explosive offense as last year. Crosby has shown that it can score quickly, and seems to be the more developed of the two teams when it comes to offensive chemistry and execution. On the other hand, Crosby has shown some vulnerability. Crosby is beatable, and I don't mean that in the "Anyone can technically beat anyone" way. This Crosby team could have lost a week ago, and it looked for a minute like Dayton might make it close too. PNG can win. But...
While I will certainly be rooting for PNG, and I think we have what it takes to pull off a victory (despite our offensive struggles, we still have one of the best weapons in the state), I have to predict a Crosby win. This is going to be a good, tough game. And who knows, maybe it will be a key game for PNG in establishing its identity? PNG has shown flashes of being a complete team, and if we can put the pieces together, we will be dangerous. In any case, with what we know about the two teams, I do not think PNG can survive a shootout with Crosby, especially with how quickly Crosby has scored in the second half this season. Hope the Indians prove me wrong."
This is the best tasting crow I've ever had.

I've defended the Silsbee coach for 2 years now,  it about 85% of the things he did made NO sense whatsoever...so much to point out...
But WO-S did play well, especially in the second half to get the win.  Hats off to them.  I hope these teams meet again.  Hopefully, the Silsbee coach had enough time to draw up more plays in that huge tail clipboard he carried around...

Oh, I hear you. I just enjoy trolling Nederland, and it’s really easy to do on this subject.
If PN-G and Crosby have a rivalry in the making, I’d say it looks a lot less like our rivalries with Nederland and TJ and a lot more like the pseudo-rivalries we had with WO-S and Beaumont Central. It’s not a rivalry built out of genuine hate and decades of history, it’s a rivalry built out of genuine competition year in and year out. I’d bet good money that PN-G and Crosby are going to be in the same district for a several seasons to come, so I guess we’ll see where it goes.
But if we’re gonna have a rivalry, we’re gonna start it off right with me pointing out that we played Crosby three times when I was in high school and we won 29-28, 37-7 and 38-7, respectively. That first score was one of the only three wins we scored in Matt Burnett’s last season, as I recall. The Cougars were more like kitty-cats back then.

I think Nederland has a point, in that we've struggled in recent years to find wins against them. So with Nederland, they can certainly crow about the last two decades. At the same time, if you are going to care about records at all, the all-time record matters as well. You can't just pull out a slice of history that looks good for you and ignore everything else. In any case, in the PNG-Crosby history, PNG can point to recent history and all-time history. I think a lot of us could agree that there are years we didn't play Crosby where they would likely have have been favored to win, but no one gets points for games that weren't played.

PNG is 10-3 overall against Crosby. 9 of those wins came this century, with 5 of them in the past 10 years. Faircloth is 4-2 against Crosby. Crosby beat PNG in 2007, 2011, and 2013. This is a huge win for PNG, and I certainly thought Crosby was going to win this, but PNG is the big brother in this rivalry, no matter what way you spin it.

I think what you saw tonight was the first of what is going to be a lot of issues for Crosby sports programs. Due to budget cuts the new DC was let go before the game today. Either way good game by RJ, PNG is nothing without him. Crosby has lost 3 of the last 4 games to what I consider are the good running qbs they’ve played; RJ twice, Jordan Cooper once with the only win coming against Zion Childress. Again, good game by RJ, for the second year in a row he makes a play to carry PNG past Crosby by three with second left on the clock. Backup qb played well enough to beat anyone on our schedule tonight, RJ made multiple conversions on third/fourth and long late Crosby could’ve stopped any one of and won.
I’m not sure exactly how many of the staff got let go/are getting let go but I could well see Crosby struggling to even make the playoffs. Even if Crosby would’ve won this game I think with our issues that are going to permeate the district’s sports teams our realistic goal would’ve been going 11-1 this year and maybe just reaching the 2nd round for the near future. I think 10-2 is still realistic and considering the circumstances plus Howard being out I’ll take it.
Personally it sucks to have one of your 14’s lose his DC when it looked like he might have it put together and then have the other one completely lose his head coach. What a bleeping day. Congrats PNG fans, no matter how the board views Crosby posters and whatever condition our program may be in, any time you beat us it’s usually a big win for that team’s fans/coaches/program/community. It’s going to be the duty free blue label Johnny Walker for ole’ 14.2 tonight.
