1.
I honestly think .270 is best all around gun.
I like it too but will be going back to ole faithful next year.... My 30-06. BTW- My 8 yr old shot a buck yesterday evening 1-10-10... A big ole shaggy long horn spike.. Remember how I said that the 3 previous deer and hog that dropped by a 243 this year???  Well this buck was shot and ran like he was breaking out of prison.  Had to track him.. But it was shot placement.. He shot a little further back than he should have.. ALso the deer was slightly quartering towards us.. I had lost the blood trail but thankfully the green eyes on the deer were picked up by my very very small flashlight.  I lucked out.
2. Well I disagree with you on that.  I've let many many small 8pt walk along with 4pts and 6pts through the years.  I've also taken 1.5 year old 6pts and ain't ashamed to admit it.  I'm a hunter not a trophy hunter.   I've been able to kill 8 bucks year for the last several years and could have yet usually take 2 bucks between me, my two boys, and my wife... all hunters. Still I'm embracing the 13 inch rule.. I got enough hunters in my family that there is no possible way I can't end up with 5-6 deer every year.  Now if they make the spikes illegal I'd be in a bind.
3.
.25-06 is a great round for all around hunting.   Plenty of range and will knockdown anything you are going to see here in Texas.
Really??  I've never shot one but I hadn't heard much good about it.  Just heard it was a fast flat shooting gun.  Would it be a good youth gun?
4. I still dont know a soul other than outlaws that shoots anything that moves.
5. the problem with a some hunters is that they think you can hit a deer anywhere with one of the bigger guns and it will go down.  Well they end up getting sloppy and don't watch their shot placement.  I don't care what you shoot you still have to take care of where you shoot.  Even when Gunny Hathcock was shooting a .50 cal or 300 win mag in Vietnam he still aimed for the center of the chest.
6.
Lol sounds like your raising sharp shooters whered they shoot the hog head or body?
Shot the hog in the neck way up high (it was getting dark).  Broke its spine.   If you have a kid hunting, you cannot go wrong with the 243.  That little youth model that my boys shoot with is very addictive to carry around.  I've carried it many times just by myself.  Its so short and light.
7.
I've heard a lot of people say they've had to track deer long ways after hitting them good with a .243 what do you'll think about that?
I've watched my boys drop 2 does, 1 8pt, and 1 huge hog this year with a 243.  They all dropped on sight and had  huge holes in them. The 243 is singlehandedly the best gun ever made for hunting in my opinion.  The one my boys shoot is a Remington Mowhawk 243 bolt action youth model. It is 35 inches long and is deadly deadly deadly.  I wouldn't take $1000.00 for it
8. For the past several years I've shot a .270.  Before that i shot a 30-06.  I also have a  7mm mag and two 30-30's.  I will be going back to my 30-06 next year as my primary weapon.  However, I do still plan to get a 300 win mag one of these days.  I've always wanted one and I'm gonna get it.  I would also love to buy me a little compact 243 youth model.  In the typical deer hunting scenario I don't think it matters what type of gun you use.  Shot placement is key.
9. Congrats to both Newton and Kirbyville on the excellent successful seasons.  You both have much to be proud for.
10.
I stand by what I said. I have not threw around any of the coaching. You want to make this out to be about me. Alright you do that. I still think getting beat by an offense two years running is worth questioning how do you do something about it. I have not said anything about the coaching of those defenses. You want to belittle me about working. As long as anyone works for what they have I cannot say anything negative towards them. I happen to not run the debarker but admire someone that can day in and day out to provide for their family. Your obviously superior to anyone in that position.
Well Beano just because you stand by what you've stated doesn't mean you aren't wrong. You have thrown around the coaching and the coaches.  I still challenge you to have the guts and the down unders to walk into those coaches office with a piece of chalk and get on the board.
11. The spread is simply another offense. Its been around forever, nothing new. Fans and the ultra-football-guru daddies like it because its flashy and its the "in thing".  They don't understand the Wing-t or the slot-t even though those offense are much more complicated than the spread.
12. Reread the thread.. You were throwing around the coaching. What I'm saying is that if you want to help... man up and walk into their office and give them some pointers.  You talk the talk like a big man in total anonymity on here but do you have the guts to face them?  I seriously doubt it.  If you can't defense the wing t you are going home, same as the slot t, the single wing, the spread....... any offense!  Could Shelbyville or Chester line up with Daingerfields offense and be contenders??  Sometimes there are better teams and its not because of the offense they run.  It ain't about the x's and o's its about the jesses and joes!
13. I didn't say any coach was satisfied.  I'm sure they are not. I wouldn't be either.  However, the ole "i pay taxes argument doesn't fly". You are not a coach.  Don't try to be one.  And still... You are not going to pick out any type of defense.  I stand by my statement that I'm sure the staff would pay very close attention to your infinite football wisdom.  Just stroll into the office, grab a piece of chalk and start drawing up some stuff.  Put your money where your mouth is. Maybe its you that has the wrong job... I'm sure that the guys down at the plywood mill would love to see you further your dream of being a coach.  It would also open up a position on the debarker for someone else!  ;)
14.
I'm saying you can't count on that. I've heard him say that, but also have heard him say things that contradict that. Just don't put that out as the gospel, it may not happen. As for the blame, he wears the big hat, it is his fault. If you get credit for the wins, you have to take the blame for the losses. I say again that he is a man, not a god. Until we figure out a defense to deal with the current problem, we are not going to get another state trophy anyways, in my opinion.
First of all there is no "we" figuring out a defense unless you coach at Newton.  Current problem?  Four rounds deep aint much of a problem.  Once you get to that level every team is awesome.  Did you see the score of Daingerfield's state game?  Here's a hint.... It wasn't because of the offense they ran.  Any offense is effective with the right athletes. Barbay is a man.  Go into his office and suggest some changes.  Get the chalk and get on the board with it.  I'm sure he will watch avidly.  ;)
15. I got a Marlin Youth model 7mm-08 at Academy for $289.00  They finally got two in and I got one of them.  Its black and looks and feels great.  Wish I could have found a wood grain but I'll try later if and when I ever buy him another.  I'm sure he's about to have the Christmas of his young little life.
16. Academy had a Marlin Xs7Fy 7mm-08 for $279.00 but they are out.  Its a black synthetic youth model that looks pretty good.  I may try for it at Bobs Pawn Shop in Woodville.  They usually have a good selection.
17. I"m trying to find my son a rifle for Christmas. Would like to get him a 7mm-08.  I feel that he will be able to shoot it for a long time.  He is now 11 years old and has been shooting a sweet little .243 Remington Mohawk.  However I have two sons, the other is 8yrs old and I have to constantly juggle the gun back and forth between the two boys.  My other rifles are a Remington 30-06 7400 Automatic, a Winchester .270 Bolt Action, a Winchester Model 94 30-30 , and a Ruger 7mm Mag.  I was going to put him with the 30-06 since its an automatic and he would not have to fidget with it much in the stand. (He will be hunting by himself next year).  That gun kicks just a little hard for him though.  The .270 would be fine except its a little long.  The 7mm Mag is out and the 30-30 is just not what I want for him.  Plus, I really want him to have a rifle he can call his own. I've tried Academy and can't get waited on.  They have a Stevens model but it is in that nasty looking tan colored synthetic material.  I like the black but can't stand the tan. Any ideas on a good place to find one?  I'm not totally opposed to a used gun as long as it isnt beat up.  Also looking to spend no more than $300.00.  Any help???????????????
18. This thread makes me want to shoot myself.  I can't believe that I just wasted my time reading all of this.
19. Just yesterday in Buna I found a fresh scrape near my stand with recent activity.  Evidently the rut is not totally over.
20. Not all that long but I shot two does at 215 yards.  They were walking across my field of view right to left, with one behind the other.  I dropped the rear one first and then immediately hit the first one.
21. I believe that Midland Lee and Austin Travis are the Rebels Some other names../ Frost Blizzards Farmersville Fightin Farmers Cuero Gobblers El Campo RiceBirds Hutto Hippos I've just always liked those names
22. I think that all are ok to be used. No different than using Pirates or Raiders
23.
Hooks will stay at WOS as long as he wants too.  With that being said, he hasn't done much in the past 6 years while in 3A.  I think once WOS dropped down, everyone would have thought that in 6 years they would have won at least 1 state championship.  Sometimes change is needed, and a new face is what is needed to take a program to the next level.  There is not any excuse for WOS losing in the first round twice, in 6 years in class 3A.  Pretty embarrassing for a once mighty program.
And your experience as a process operator enables you to accurately assess coaching talent???
24.

I don't know a single hunter other than outlaws that practice the "kill everything that moves".  Most leases here (every one I've been on) have had some sort of management program on it.  Some people here act as if people in East Texas don't know a thing about hunting at all. A bit arrogant. East Texas isn't south Texas which is littered with high fences, tame bred deer, and canned hunts.
Kill everything that moves is an oversimplification of, kill anything that is legal... which usually means the first deer that comes across your path. I have friends that hunt on such leases and I hunted on such a lease (the same one I am on now but we quit that four years ago) and I can guarantee that a substantial percentage of public hunters use such practices. If it is a buck, it is legal per lease rules. Notwithstanding some bucks are culls, a majority of them are not and need some kind of protection that they aren't getting now.
If you are interested in killing for the sake of hanging something on the wall.... which many hunters are not.  And to think that because they don't care about some giant that they don't know how to hunt, or age deer, or be management minded is what I have the problem with.  My grandfather killed one deer a year... ONE.  He would go out and hunt and hunt and hunt and then towards the end of the  season if something he wanted hadnt' came along he'd take one.  Usually doe season was over so he shot a buck.  Nice little rack on the barn but nothing to mount.  The man could out hunt all of us put together... didn't even know what a box stand or climbing stand was.
