You act like winning a state championship is as easy as a district championship. Only one wins every year. And according to your logic there would be well over 1,300 coaching openings every few years when a coach wins no state titles. Don’t know if you’ve ever coached, but sometimes bringing a team to the 2nd or 3rd round, and getting a team to play way above their talent level, is a helluva coaching job. If you think PN-G was gonna beat Crosby, Liberty Hill, or SOC then surely you must think they could beat Beaumont United in basketball too!

Sure enough. Best friends. I believe another one of their teammates was Gus Malzahn. Or maybe Gus went to high school with Coach A. Was it Henderson St or Ark Tech? The Wonder Boys has to be the worst mascot in college sports!

If Alvarez wants to job, it’s his. Keep Bronson as the DC, and great things will happen. Coach A knows how to build a program, and take a program that’s already solid to the next level. He’s always had great DC’s. Bryan Barbay, Vanya, hired WT away from Newton. Bronson would learn wonders from Jack and benefit from coaching under him as he did Coach Barbay. All assuming Alvarez even applies of course. But that would be a great combo.

PN-G just played 3 rounds. They don’t have the most talent, and never have. PN-G has always played above their talent level and beat teams they have no business beating. Faircloth got the most out of his kids and teams, IMO. While he was there, PN-G had a prolific offense, something there weren’t accustomed to on a yearly basis, and that was all due to Faircloth. He had a great offensive mine. His team’s weakness was always defense. He could never find someone to lead a decent defense and I assume that’s people “gripe” about him. Good luck finding someone to put up the points he put up year after year, and then getting them to play defense like a WO-S or Carthage, with the talent level they have. Sometimes you don’t know how well you had it, until you lose it.

I agree. They are about to learn all about “The grass ain’t always greener”!

No and no. I believe it’s all speculation at this point. -

He may not have a non-district schedule then. Cup cakes and 3rd tier programs still won’t be answering the phone when WO-S calls to fill a schedule. They will still struggle to fill a quality schedule. I would expect to continue to see LCM, Newton, Jasper and a few others on the schedule. Everything else depends on how ambitious Hickman wants to be finding his 1st few opponents. -

Good points. Austin Westlake just hired a guy with no head coaching experience, and that’s possibly the biggest and best job in Texas. However, the guy they hired was also a coordinator within the program, not a position coach. His defenses were also some of the best in the state year after year. His promotion was a foregone conclusion as soon as Dodge retired. Much like this situation it sounds like. Programs promote from within all the time. Usually someone who has paid his dues within the program and worked his way up to a coordinator position, and had success doing it. Good luck to Hickman and the Mustangs. I hope they have continued success. Time will tell. -

I can’t wait to see the list of applicants. Until then it’s all just speculation. But a job opening like WO-S, you would think there was some problem guys with head coaching experience and probably some pretty good records that got passed up. Will be interesting to see! The Super better hopes this works out, or he will be looking for a job in 2 years. He’s already alienated half of the community with this hire. Probably more than that. -

Hire the guy with the best resume, that is the most proven winner. Period. Regardless of race. If that coach happens to be black, then congrats to those in the community that feels that race should be the sole deciding factor in the process. If it’s Toby, congrats to those that want a home grown Coach that bleeds blue like they do. If there is a better coach out there that has a better track record of winning games and building programs, then you hire them, regardless of race. -
And good luck to Darrell in Mansfield. Desoto Parish pays extremely well. At one point, they were the best paying school system in Louisiana, with all the Haynesville Shale money. He’s still a young guy. Gets to collect his TRS and double dipping in LA.

Coach Alvarez still bases his offense out of the wing-T. Scat, scat trap, etc. But over the years, the one thing that seperates him from other wing T guys is he will throw the ball. He’s not afraid to throw it 15 times a game, and he will mix some shot gun in there as well. Alvarez would kill it in Jasper, and I agree that Cuero don’t have the athletes Jasper does. Not many schools do, but I don’t see him leaving Cuero after 2 years. This may depend on what Mrs Alvarez wants. His oldest Brandon, is in Garrison with the grandkids, so that may have some sway in his decision.

So Newton, who 2 years ago, was very young, full of sophomores is a coward for not scheduling a senior laden team coming off 2 state title appearances? Not to mention a team 2 classes higher? You don’t know much. Why isn’t WOS calling Aledo, Manvel, Calallen, or some other 5A powerhouse 2 classes above them? If WOS is held to the same standard as Newton, or whichever team you vow to follow, why aren’t they scheduling 5A state powers? Newton don’t cower, and never has.
-
No way in the world you are serious?! Or maybe you are, and just happen to be jealous of Newton, or worse, completely delusional of high school football. Newton don’t cower to anyone. You are basically claiming Curtis Barbay, and WT Johnston are afraid of competition! Insane and asinine! I’m glad the two best teams in SE Texas, and both have been for nearly 40 years will face each other. Newton or WOS won’t be running scared of anyone!
-
I just hope they can play a 10 game schedule. Filling all the out of district slots will be tough. They are gonna have to travel. I wish Marlin would play them. Newton owes Marlin a few beat downs!
-
Is the OT from Wellington the largest kid to ever play high school football in Texas? And he don’t look sloppy. Just a freak of nature.
-
Wasn’t WOS the one stacked the last realignment, and Newton the young team? Looks like the pages have turned.
-
I heard D.R. hooks, around 2002, at the S.E. Texas coaches clinic say he hated to play Newton. He said they were expected to win, but would come out of the game battered and bruised. He said he’d rather play PNG, or Nederland. That was straight out of his mouth. Surprised Cornel wouldn’t play Newton, but can’t say I don’t blame him.

Who’s the next bigtime Golden Triangle prospect?
MackLewis replied to jkbtjc53's topic in High School Football
This guy, who claims to working to get kids scholarships, is what’s wrong with high school football. You’ve got this guy, who so badly wants to be a coach, but can’t cut it. Then he wants to take credit for what the coaches are doing. You sir, are nothing but a street pimp, pretending to be more important than what you are. Never take credit for a kid from Newton getting a sclorship offer! Curtis Barbay, and WT Johnston have been putting kids in College way before you ever laced them up! -
Haha!! Your right! Brock wouldn’t have beat them either!! Haha
-
Brock wasn’t beating Newton if they played in Brock. Newton wasn’t getting beat. Too dominate!
-
I’m sure Highland Park playing for the 4th time this year at Grandpa Jerry’s place was no advantage at all. I’m sure the 5 hour bus trip by Manvel, and possibly sleeping in a hote room was just what Manvel wanted. You want to be smart so bad, but in reality are a severe dumba$$!
-
Offense and defense is played with 11 players. Except when it comes to all district teams. They have around 18 person per offensive and defensive team. 1- QB 3-RB 2-TE 5-WR 7-OL Looks like illegal participation for too many players to me.

Newton coach happy to live to see team win title

He’s a tough man, and the Lord ain’t finished with him yet on earth. He’s a great man and leader of young men, and I hope he stays around for many more years defying the odds stacked against him.
