Lumberton has won just 35% of their games all-time. In 46 years of football Lumberton has went 0-10 or worse 6 times. Lumberton has only had 8 winning seasons in 46 years. 2010, 2007-2008, 94-95, 90-91, 69. Heck we might as well talk about Hardin or West Hardin. lol. Fact of the matter is... Haynes doesn't have to do much to change the culture and be a winner in Lumberton. History says the talent is not there and the district they play in is to much for them. Just saying. Out of the teams listed with new Coaches, Lumberton has the weakest history of success. I wish the Raiders the best, but it is gonna be tough.
Please elaborate on the Worse part.... I thought going 0-10 was as bad as it can get....
In 1967 they went 0-12-1.
Yeah that was a tough playoff year!!  ;D
 2. Well Mr. Toups, I do not know you personally but I do respect you a lot from your activity on this board and your website and believe that you are all about kids and have their interest at heart!!!  Never understood why you chose to spend so much time in Dayton, but I believe the place is better for it.  Good luck and God Speed!!! I post the above before watching the video. It was indeed very powerful.  The only thing that could have made it better was highlights from the 7-8 loss to the L-Train!!!  LOL!!!    ;D ;D ;D

 4. Let's hope that Haynes can bring in some solid assistants on both sides of the ball that stick around for awhile and help him build a solid program!
 5. These kids may be great, and they may in fact be as successful as you guys are prediciting and hopefully so, but a lot can happen between now and then that has nothing to do with Jack Yates High.  There are a multitude of "can't miss" prospects that never made it for various reasons!  Sigler will have to do more than be a good coach to shepperd this group all the way through.
 6.
Lumberton ISD voted Larry Haynes new AD tonight at board meeting
You had your inside source!!!  Then new/old coach!!  Hope he can "catch fire in a bottle"!!
 7.
Haynes
That's your prediction or your inside scoop???  I never heard of or saw a list of applicants.  This moved pretty quickly!!
 8.
A long term decision should never be based on the past.  The past should only be used as a means to identify what needs to be improved. That said, I don't see us that much different than most of the members in the Sun Belt, and I see us in the upper echelon of the Southland Conference.  We may not always see it on the scoreboard, but our budget and facilities show it.  Could we support a higher budget?  I don't know.  The key factor is commitment.  If we do jump, I hope our decision makers base their analysis on future commitment (monetary and fan support and enthusiasm), organization, and a determination of who we want to be long term.  What's past is past.  I'd like to see the following. 1.  Provide a long term vision as well as intermediate goals.  Set up benchmarks to determine if things are on track.  The goals and vision should be used as a     communications tool to get people excited and on board.     a.  If we see ourselves as an FBS University, then we should work toward that.  We should do everything possible to get in a conference with Universities that have           similar goals and visions.     b.  If we see ourselves as something else, then we should work to be the best at that.  We also need to get supporters of the University onboard with that decision           so that we can move on. (I hope we see ourselves as an FBS University.) 2.  Set up an Athletics Foundation to help build an endowment.  The endowment could help provide a monetary base. 3.  Contact alumni and folks in the local area and let them know of the plans.  It would be good to try to get people on board up front.  I'd split my focus groups into several categories and weight my concentration on those categories.  Below are some possibilities.     a.  Die-hard supporters - Those who have vigorously supported the program win or lose.  The current Cardinal Club membership would be a good place to start.   b.  Corporate Groups and Partnerships who are looking for some way to give back to the community and maybe get some recognition.  (I think LU has done a good       job with this group).   c.  Season Ticket holders of any of the sports.   d.  Alumni - It would be good to communicate with all alumni.   e.  Local Area - This could be achieved through news releases and advertisements.  One campaign I remember very well was Cardinal Craze during Coach Larry       Kennan's time.  It got the whole area excited.  The TV stations competed with each other on whose news helicopter would be at the game.  The games during that time period turned into events. One question is how tied is the Athletics Department with the other parts of the University.  I recall Dr. Simmons mentioning enrollment increasing by several thousand when football was revived.  Based on that, there appears to be a correlation.  If there is a correlation, the decision is not purely an athletic one.  The way I see it Athletics and the goal to grow the University are tied together.  Neither exists in a vacuum.   I'm in.  I experienced the wins over Baylor, UTEP, and others.  I experienced the NCAA / NIT runs that we had in the late 70's to mid 80's.  I still see good results with Baseball and other sports.  I remember being part of a near capacity Montagne Center crowd for a Women's basketball game as well as big crowds for Men's basketball.  I see no reason why we can't have success like that in the future.  We just need to have the commitment to make it happen.
+1
 9. I would be for it if they pay property taxes and as long as they adhere to school district zones!  No living in Vidor and going to West Brook.
 10.
I think some good points have been raised in this thread. First off, I'm one who thinks Lamar could and should move up to FBS as soon as possible.  Most of the universities I consider as our direct peers and former rivals have already made the jump. such as ULL, LaTech, ArkSt, TxState, UTSA, North Texas, Western Kentucky, etc.  I also see a lot of universities that I would consider as peers who are currently making the jump like Georgia State, Georgia Southern and South Alabama.  Looking at the examples, I am not seeing universities a whole lot different from ours.  If they can do it, why can't Lamar?  I think there are several upsides to a well thought out move up. This is primarily a sports forum, but part of improving the athletic resume for programs wanting to move up is through overall university reputation and perceived support for the University.  That's one reason I'm excited that the Investing in the Future campaign is at $102,095,373 out of the increased goal of $125,000,000.00 according to the LU University Advancement web page. To make the jump, the University needs support of its alumni and from the surrounding community.  The same can be said for the University to increase its academic stature.  I'm a firm believer of giving back to the university.  I'm not a deep pocket donor, but collectively even every day folks like me can help a little considering there are over 75,000 alumni .  Just assuming 10% of us (7,500 alumni) make an average contribution of $200.00 a year, we collectively could help the University with $1,500,000.00 before corporate matches.  We can also get our companies to help support.  Many of the corporations in the local area have matching programs.  Like all the residents, those companies have a vested interest in a better educated workforce.  For those of us who have been transferred from the local area, we can make an impact also. Matching gifts are a big thing.  Below is a partial list of corporations with local facilities.  It appears none will match for athletics. ExxonMobil has a great program.  They offer a 3 to 1 match for employees as well as retirees (except retirees of Mobil Corporation).  The match is capped at $7,500.00 per year.  That means if an ExxonMobil employee made a contribution of $100.00, ExxonMobil would kick in an additional $300.00.  ($400.00 total) Motiva offers a 1 to 1 match for employees.  The match is capped at $5,000.00 per year. BASF offers a 1 to 1 match for employees.  The match is capped at $5,000.00 per year. Chevron Phillips 1 to 1 match for employees.  The match is capped at $5,000 for employees and $1,500.00 for retirees. Trinity Industries 1 to 1 match for employees.  The match is capped at $2,500 and needs prior VP approval. Entergy - 1 to 1 match for employees.  The match is capped at $3,000. Total Petrochemicals 1 to 1 match for employees.  The match is capped at $5,000.00. Others include... IBM - For employees, 1 for 1 match for cash.  University can get 2 for 1 match for equipment.  IBM also matches retiree cash contributions 1 for 2  (.50). ConocoPhillips offers a 1 to 1 match.  The match is capped at $15,000.00. Shell offers a 1 to 1 match.  The match is capped at $5,000.00. BP offers a 1 to 1 match.  The match is capped at $5,000.00. Apache offers a 1 to 1 match.  The match is capped at $10,000.00. Chevron offers a 1 to 1 match.  The match is capped at $5,000.00. If any of us have an interest in also supporting the athletic programs (scholarships, etc.), we could use the corporate match to leverage our general education support and kick in a little to the athletics program. I really appreciate those large dollar donors who have stepped up to the plate.  I also think those like me should do our share. Advantages are better quality of life for the area; making the area more attractive for prospective corporate investments as well as a better educated area. I grew up in the area.  I went to Lamar and had a great experience.  I enjoy Lamar athletics.  I want the area and Lamar to succeed.  As one who has been out of the area for over 20 years, I see great untapped potential.  I can see what people in similar areas with an optimistic attitude have been able to accomplish.  I would like to see more people transition to a vision of We Can and away from a vision of We Can't.
Very Good Post!! I agree with you!
 11.
This why lesser communities and smaller schools achieve so much more while Lamar gets left behind. You believe it can't be done, it'll never be done.
The belief by Billy Tubbs that "little ole Lamar" could achieve great things in basketball with almost no budget and playing in McDonald Gym is why LU basketball was as successful as it was in the lat 70s and early 80's!
 12. Yep! But for every 50 or so (or maybe more) that don't deserve to be in the playoffs, one sub-500 team makes some real noise.
 13.
I'm curious to know if House Bill 72 (no pass, no play) will apply to these students.  Would the parents be required to turn in grades to the school of participation every 6 weeks?  And if so, do you really think any parents would "fail" their own child and allow them not to participate?
Great question and point!!
 14. No doubt could be wrong, but my observation has been that a very large majority of homeschooled kids are not all that sports motivated, so I don't see this as a major coup for schools to pick up athletes.  I know there will be some (Tebows don't come around every day), but it will not be difference maker for large schools for sure.
 15.
I am very frustrated with Lamar's leadership. If Lamar screw this up, I am done. All Lamar former conference mates and equals like La Tech, ULL, UL-MONROE, and Ark st are signing home and home games with Baylor, Boise st, SMU, and TCU. While Lamar bring in Langston and Panhandle st. Even Texas st played Texas Tech at home. I am so sick of the small minds infesting Lamar leadership positions.
I think SabineRavine is carefully crafting his words for his response!!  ;D
 16.
I had Florida Gulf Coast in Sweet 16. ;)
Yeah but your bracket was made out in pencil!!  ;D Saw some of FGCU's game against Georgetown.  They are reminiscent of the LU's sweet 16 team.
 17.
Kountze Tremaine Hancock Ashton Iba McDaniel Josh Hancock Keithan Hancock Bench Devin Bray Andre Boutte Waylon Lowe
These lists are all time in the last 15 years or so.  Any mention of Kountze all time team without Russell Coffee doesn't hold water!!
 18. After thinking about this and reading the posts, I think that where I have some issues about AAA Academy is that is has the appearance that this team was put together more like a "select" team would be put together than how a traditional inner city public school would be put together (I have read the inferences that Yates is a "recruited" program while being a public school).  I whole heartedly support the academic mission of the school and would like to see the results of its academic progress.  In the end, that is much more important but that wouldn't generate 2 posts on this board in a seperate thread titled academics at AAA Academy!  Sports is king and will always trump academics!
 19. The big difference here is the AAA is not a "traditional" public school as we have known public schools over the last century.  But the metro area public schools have moved away from the traditional model with magnet schools and open enrollment (which is now also spreading to more rural areas).  It will never be the same as it was and pumper has done a good job of describing the problem.  AAA should either be a private school or it should be moved up to the predominate DFW area classifications as it is cherry picking its athletes from within DISD.  As I see wherever he posts, for Dove, the end justifies the means!!!  I do applaude the academic efforts of the school!
 20. Very young team.  Real growing experience!1
 21. Bagwell & Biggio being hosed!  Their is a Houston sport media bias.  If they had the same career with another franchise, they would be in for sure!
 22.
Correct. Westlake was able to pry Allman away from his alma mater and one of the most storied programs in HS football in the nation which he was building back into a power (Odessa Permian). All it took was $125K a year. Those schools also seem to get a lot of ex professional athletes kids!
That's correct also!!  You saw the same thing with Southlake Carroll when Dodge was there.  All of a sudden you had these "move ins" of ex cowboy player's kids.  Bottom line is in the metro areas "where all the money is in the state", they now have the resources and they are using them to their advantage to build programs that win year in and year out.  Other schools around the state may get a good group of kids come through and make a little noise for a few years but then it drops off.  These football factories like mentioned above build winners out of the kids they have year in year out and then they get the "move ins" that only help keep them at the top!!
 23.

Anybody watch how u c an build a power house football team
Have lots of MONEY!!!!! Look at the top 5A and 4A programs in Texas year in and year out. Allen - Money Katy - Money Southlake - Money Lake Travis - Money Ausitn Westlake - Money Pearland - Money Cibbolo Steele - Money Aledo - Money Highland Park - Money Sure the occasional Lancasters pop through to get to or win a Title, but the above mentioned programs win regularly.
LaMarque had a pretty good run in the 90's as did Stephenville (they one it again this year in 3A) but your point is well taken.  Lake Travis facilities are on par with a lot of colleges.  The most important thing that the money does is attract and keep top flight coaches.  The days of a Curtis Barbay staying at a small school like Newton and building a long term championship program are all but gone.
 24. And how will they be accurate in counting total attendance at a game with "holdovers"?
 25. Cameron and East Bernard would be a great game!!
