Uh. Not this game. I know BH didn't have any RB but they can't put a WR in jet motion? i could set my watch to that first down power right by the QB. There was some go routes that smoked Crosby secondary early, why nothing underneath once the secondary was in soft prevent? Was the QB making that call? That's even worse. There was a great comeback play from BH15 that was a pure timing, thing of beauty. Ball was out before WR had turned around. Great play. Not run enough. Coaching? (We are just fans after all). BH conditioned this secondary for the deep ball early. It dried up in the second half. There was a beautiful fake power run where 5 pulled up and threw deep. Suckered the corner hard for a TD. By the 4th quarter the defense could afford to allow the 3-4 yard QB runs and cap the deep threat I mean, points are what matters and they were turning these plays into points early but it set a tendency. Rio was able to adjust for the 2nd half. It seemed, defensively, BH didn't adjust much. Coaching? I didn't see a whole lot of innovation or questionable decisions by either staff but no way Rio got out-coached.

Great game. Barbers Hill made less mistakes and had great QB play the first half. Burned the crosby secondary a lot through 3 quarters. Were attacking, effectively, the same corner (23) then they worked on 17. In the 4th quarter, 17 had some beautiful passes defenses. They tried to strike agains 23 and he had a couple great plays. Did I hear BH had both RB's out? I never saw a RB carry for BH. At all. Didn't notice until now. The penalties agains Crosby were deserved. There was some holding and blocking in the back. Some of them blatant. 4th quarter - Crosby is starting to exploit BH focus on 21. Howard has some decent runs. Patterson out muscles a contested ball in the end zone for a TD. Fatigue hits both teams but BH loses speed faster. Defense had some really good stands and that final score was a dagger. This game was led by BH for quite a bit. Both teams brought it. I think BH peaked early and Crosby peaked a little later. Made for a fun game.

I think there are DIV 1 recruits inside of every district. They are there. It takes the right culture to seek, equip, and support them. That comes from coaching. There will always be kids that have talent and would stand out no matter where they are. The right culture can coach up kids that would usually fade into the roster. Kids are kids. Nobody is feeding kids anything different or have some kind of genetic booster in the water. It is cultures that enforce the correct habits and behaviors that help these kids shine. BH has had a culture shift that has trickled down to the JH level. I saw BH coaches actually coaching hard for JH track meets this spring. A marked increase over some recent years. I see far too many JH coaches coasting and that stinks. The kids can tell when the coach is just going through the motions. Critical rule of leadership - Teams will copy the leaders behavior before the leaders strategy.

If we assume your observations are correct, and things don't drastically change, then this should favor Crosby. Crosby conditioning was excellent on defense. Jasper was a physical offense on the field a ton. Hopefully the offense has the same level. They weren't on the field for long stretches. Crosby will exploit a mediocre run defense. #21 will get his. The backup is an OK senior. The have a corner that was a RB last year that may get involved. Thought I saw him in the backfield a little last week. Crosby QB did not play run first. He was looking to throw. (some comments here didn't believe he would) This should be an upgrade in talent to the FW QB. Crosby secondary is not dominant. Jasper is not about the pass. If I had complete game film, that is something I would want to go back and look at. I could be wrong. Looking forward to watching the 8th grade scrimmage (it is a man with no real life that will travel to watch an 8th grade scrimmage) tonight.

I saw Crosby rotating between 2 kickers. I did not see who missed what.

Aha. I didn't get to the game until 9:00 left in the first quarter. Score was 13-0. I never asked anybody about those first 13. Credit to Jasper to keep fighting, lots of teams would have just laid down. Jasper did fumble a lot through the game I saw. I think the score is an accurate reflection of the two teams. Getting off into the "well if this happened then this and then that" kind of conversations are a waste. I am guilty of them also but we can't predict the future or the different outcomes if things had changed. Predictions are such a roll of the dice. Makes it fun though.

I made it to the game at 9 minutes to go in the first quarter. Score was 13-0. I thought “That was quick” and got to my seat. I am a Crosby parent with 2 kids in the school system with one in athletics. I am a little biased but this is what I saw – · Jasper has some undersized kids that play a lot bigger. The JV/Freshman teams didn’t seem to have that issue. They looked big and played that way. · Crosby throttled back in the first half, again. I am just a dude in the stands. But I really think Crosby scores fast in the first half and pulls back. Not just intensity from the kids. Playcalling seems to drop off. · One of the starting interior LB for Crosby is a soph. One of the nicest kids from a great family. He had 4 solo tackles and 1 sack. · Defense looks young. Except… o 2 minutes to go in the 2nd half and Jasper has a long run to the Crosby 1 yard line. Jasper had a sideline penalty on the run. Backed them up 10 yards. Defensive line for Crosby just brutalized them at the point of attack on 1st and 2nd down. 3rd and 4th down were both sacks. · Jasper recovered an onside kick (perfectly executed) to start the second half. Promptly scores. · (Gulp) · Jasper recovered another onside kick. I am not a mean guy but this kinda stuff is why I would expect a team to be ruthless at least for the first half. Jasper has momentum and is knocking on the door to taking the lead in this game. Ball game is back and forth at this point but Jasper is starting to look winded and Crosby is playing very vanilla. Jasper offense is built for ball control and consistent scores but only has one speed. There is no up-tempo. They are down by 7 for most of the second half and even have the ball with a minute to go. They never changed tempo. Jasper never stopped fighting. Crosby left a lot on the table here. Not including the 2 TD’s called back for holding. Tough game next week for Crosby.

Jasper fumbled a lot. Quite a few bad snaps. Their QB lost his composure and was screaming at his center. He gathered it up pretty quick. The whole idea of "gifted" points excludes any context. How were those points scored? What was the score beforehand? Field position? They weren't "gifts". Just points.

Jasper up 6-0. 6:49 - 1st.

That was a great game. Jasper has a big TE. Wish more teams could use a TE. Way under utilized. It ain't like those type kids are under every rock.

I am seeing Crosby as #74 in the state on Maxpreps. If you read this [Hidden Content] it is done by computer. The cancellation of so many games may be affecting that. Who knows. It also rates Carthage as the #5 football team in Region III. Ahead of Katy, Dickinson, Cedar Park. Me thinks it is broken. Where can I get BBQ in Jasper? I love small town BBQ.
-
A bunch of senior wide receivers. I am digging through some Jasper video. I don't think Jasper is anybodies whipping boy. I always get like this closer to the games. Over analyze and dig too deep. Fun though...

I expect #10 to go off. People just don't know. That kid is a killer.

Well, we ain't putting pressure on anybody. A lot of guys on this forum somehow think they influence things on the field, sidelines, or coaches office by what they say on these boards. Illusions of grandeur abound. My point, probably not worded well, was that I can only compare my memories of Cotton playing (watched every snap of every game in the stands) to a couple of Howard's games last year and the scrimmages this year. 2 years is a long time to accurately remember Cottons performance and try to compare to another player. And not taking into account other factors such as offensive line, defense providing good field position. Howard did win the Newcomer of the year award for the district last year. He showed something to those guys that vote for that stuff. Howard wants to pass. He knows that is his strength. And I am not being snarky, but if I polled this thread, lots of folks think this is a cake walk or tune up for Crosby. Go to MaxPreps and the rankings for the teams are not. They show Crosby at #300 in the state overall, and Jasper at #156 in the state overall. Now I get it, rankings aren't worth a hill of beans compared to the scoreboard. Spare me. Did most of us here miss something? Is there something screwy with the rankings on MaxPreps?

Heading to the Fresh/JV game tonight. My younger son played with a lot of the 9th graders through little league and my older son played with the JV kids and backup QB through junior high (awesome trombone player for the BRM now). Good kids. The 9th offense is run a little different (to use some different strengths) than the varsity. Just what I have seen from 2 scrimmages. Howards backup is a good QB also, but he is a sophomore and not even as good as Howard was last year. All the talk about the last 2 year playoff exits is legit. No excuses but there are some contributing factors. Last years theme seemed to be nagging injuries. The year before was also injuries but Ridge Point was also more physical. How is that going to impact the team going forward? Jeff mentioned in an interview about injuries and how they impact a teams chances to really go deep into the playoffs. I wouldn't be surprised to see some rotations and decisions made to prevent injuries (personally think there isn't much you can do) and find ways to get the defense in better positions. Make the playoffs healthy. Put a young defense in good positions. (saw some special teams changes...interesting)

uh yeah. By a ton. Cotton was an amazing athlete with decent decision making. But any pass over 20yds became a rainbow jump ball. He couldn't deliver at distance. Howard is the best I have seen for Crosby, arm wise, for the last 5 years. He isn't the hard runner that Cotton was. Maybe top end faster. That is just an eye test, Cotton graduated a while ago.

This is true....and it hurts.

Highest paid high school coaches in Houston area
texbuzz replied to Cougar14.2's topic in High School Football
I am not a dayton guy but a good friend at work is and she has made the same comment. Church connection was big reason for the hire. She had a son play for Dayton and is kinda in the know over there. Doesn't mean he won't do a good job. Just pretty weird to hear the same thing in two unrelated places. -
Their guards are big but a little lazy. that feeds into the 2 back formation you speak of. QB has good A-gap protection that gives him a better mesh when they run the option off of it. The goal is getting to the edge with speed. This will be a test for our rovers to take on blocks and push to the sideline. I don't have the defensive scheme for Crosby but I would rather force their RB to challenge my corner coming up than a slower LB. If the Rovers box and force the RB to cut, the RB has the advantage against a slower LB corps. We don't really have plodding LB 's so it is less of an issue and 30 is going to punish a RB once he gets there. Will be interesting to see how FB tests this in the 1st quarter. It may be successful but their RB's will pay the iron price. Shammah should force to the sideline and 17 is playing better. We had the same problem (it seemed, i wasn't on the sidelines) with RP. They played disciplined and forced our speed to the sideline. It seemed every running play was run out of bounds for little or no gain. (I was screaming "GIVE THE BALL TO MCGEE!!").
-
You are right about that. I think the talk was very cordial but the everyday Crosby fan felt Ridge Point was going to be a win. Crosby had to do more than show up but it was a win. That was wrong. I am more cynical this year. The only time I felt like Crosby had a sure thing all year was against Caney Creek. (I missed the Dayton and Splendora game for work). Crosby has one or two bad turnovers and some penalties, they lose. There was some missed calls on Crosby in the Vidor game that would have changed the game. Maybe once 21 is fully in the game plan and 88 doesn't have penalties against him (both great kids from great families), Crosby can walk away from teams. Just haven't seen it that much. A dominant win here sets up nicely for a tough game in the next round (we can look ahead because we are just fans you know). I want to see Brenham next because their fans are mouthy. Crosby fans too but feisty fans are fun.
-
I think Crosby underestimated RP. Looking back, that was not good. I think the current staff is not underestimating anybody. The coaches and team have been solely making decisions and driving for a deep playoff run. I can assure you, they are focused on beating Marshall and not looking past them. The decision to play 2 tough out of district games, not putting a lot of different stuff on film, decisions to hold out kids longer than normal after injury, a whole lot of play it safe and get on the bus 2nd halves. Do the things now to help in the playoffs later. There is a ton of the offensive playbook that is not being shown. #21 can run, he is close to 100% if not there. But they only put him in space one time, and he scored. Then they pulled him. How many times have they thrown to the RB out of the backfield? Now, I don't agree with all those decisions but I understand the why.
-
The whistle is a signal to finish blocks. Hear the whistle, narrow your stance, bench press the defender, run your feet. Doesn't work perfect every time but you get defenders on their back or they get mad and take a shot and you get your flag. I loved Vidor offense.
-
He is not getting healthier. Every game when he goes down, he tweaks that ankle. It is heartbreaking because he has been working up to this. It would be fun to see him line up at WR to start the game and watch NC to see if they adjust.
-
If the defense shows up like it did Friday, Crosby can win. Offense has to take what is there. I love Mannie. I really do. I hate the way his ankle has played out this year. But I think every team has figured out, he isn't going to run the ball. They are loading up on the RB and catching him when he scrambles. He is not a dual threat right now and the sophomore is. #7 isn't going to set the world on fire but he can do the job when the defense plays like they can. With Sqwrl on the field, good things could happen.
